Default Great Planes Patty W. w/OS160

Is anyone using an OS160 in this plane? If so how does it fly? How is the vertical? Weight of the plane? Any weight need to be added to the nose for balance? Thanks in advance.

Well, I guess I'll go first. I've had OS 1.60's...great motors, reliable, lots of power, will turn a 18 x 8 with GREAT authority. Having said that, the GP Extra (I have one of them) is a heavy beast. Even allowing for my extra weight in the choice of my motor (a ZDZ 50), the Wagstaff Extra will be 13.5 - 14.25 lbs with a OS 1.60.

That's an AWFUL lot to expect the OS to haul around. And the PW is an aerobatic machine....power it fairly, so that you can enjoy it rather than be frustrated and dislike it for it's less than thrilling performance with an OS .160.

It's just too much airframe and radio to haul around....

Jeff,

From what I have seen/heard, the BME 50 is the *perfect* engine for that particular airplane. If you don't mind shelling out around $575 !! That hurts. Good luck

Will it fit in the Cowl very well ? How does the DP extra 300 compare to the wagstaff. I have a DP extra with a BME 50 and I am thinking of going to the Wagstaff.

Hope the BME 50 will power the wagstaff as well as the DP extra. Way over powered. will do everything. Motor really sticks out of the DP extra cowl. Looks bad.

Default BME 50

I have a BME 50 in mine although I have not flown it yet. The engine does stick out of the cowl on the bottom but its not that bad, at least to me.

The GP PW Extra is supposedly slightly lighter than the DP extra with the same powerplant, thats what I heard.

If you look through the massive thread, there are a few pictures of how much the BME 50 sticks out of the cowl.

From other peoples flight reports, the BME 50 will hover at around 1/3 throttle.

While the plane will fly with a OS160, you will have limited vertical. If you can get that light of an engine to balance the plane, I would say to go for it. EVERYTHING should fit in the cowl.

Bought mine from a club member who needed cash to build a B-17
It has a Bme-50 for power and is awsome. This is the perfect engine for this airplane, unlimited verticle.
I am presently refitting it with new radio gear I am a Futaba person and will be useing 9252 digital servos for rudder and elevator 2 ea. and 9151 digitals on ailerons and all new linkages.
With the BME-50 I want to make sure that I keep it a while.
This has to be one of the best ARF's available, try it you'll like it
