Ok guys, a little problem. My right aileron is shaped like a banana. Looks like I'm going to have to remove the covering, sand it straight and recover.[:'(]

Bummer, if you cut the covering right you wont have to recover it much..

I decided before I ripped off the covering to try to straighten it out by placing the trailing edge on my building table, shimmed up each end with a piece of 3 mil foam and pushed down on the leading edge while going over the entire aileron with the iron. It would have been easier if I had a second set of hands, but it worked. I was able to get all the surfaces hinged last night, sealed all gaps this morning. I ended up ordering a BME 50 which will hopefully be here today. Supposed to have a flyin/ swap meet tomorrow but if it's rained out 2 weeks in a row, I'll work on the Edge instead.

Hi All,

I'm at work at the moment, but my dad just called me to say that the new plane arrived today. He kicked off about the size of it sitting in the living room "it's like having two coffins in here" lol. old folks eh???

Well i can't wait to get home and get it out the box. First things first, strip the covering off and prepare it for the new red bull scheme.

Thanx Darren, i wasn't expecting it til tomorrow at the earliest.

I'll keep y'all posted through out the build, should be nice when it's done.

Later,

Gordon.

I noticed after my 5th or 6th landing all with NO bounce and very slow approach that one side of landing gear didn't look right when taxing back. Further inspection shown that 2 blind nuts had ripped through the landing gear block. Got home and removed the gear, Cut the covering away from the bottom and found the other 2 were on their way out also. So I removed the whole mess. Which was very easy to do. This particular piece of wood was NOT a quality piece to start with. (luck of the draw I guess). The glue used appeared to be in the right places but the wood was not in flat enough to allow the glue to mate. So I ended up replacing the block with 1/4" lite ply. Then ran two cross braces along the top from the inside ( about 3" long x 1/2" and pinned everything like a sandwich with small dowels in four places. That baby isn't going anywhere (lol) The whole rework only took me 45min from start to finish. Very easy to do! This airplane fly's awesome. It would have been a shame to had damaged it for that reason. Dumb thumbs I can accept, A poor piece of wood I cannot. But all is well now and my wonderful EDGE is better than new. I still can't get over how lite this airplane fly's love it.

I dripped a ton of thin all over that area of the fuse. Also I used glass and thin CA near the front former to keep the block from being torn out. No issues so far. My blind nuts did strip out on a less than perfect landing on one side so I used little lock nuts inside the fuse. Also I have had to fix one side of the gear with CF rods and thick CA (yes JohnVH I know your gear has had no problems ).

Yeah like all ARF's there are little things wrong with it but it flies very well.

Okay, I just have to say it again!!! FINALLY got to go fly my Edge again and man, I am lovin' it!!! I am sure that part of it is the fact that I haven't flown much since last July, but I am really starting to get comfortable with this plane and it really performs!! Flies so light, Harriers are, well, sooo easy as I am not really that good of a pilot and theyjust seem to lock in w/o any wing-rock, just fly it around in harrier w/ the rudder! Not quite up to par with Ken's or John's walls yet, but i can tell with a little practice I will have em down! They are pretty predictable, I just gotta figure out throttle management After the pop-up!

Now, to find an excuse to go fly on Mother's Day.........

Regards,

Astrohog

well folks, i started work on my plane at last. I've got as far as removing all the covering and i've done the fuz in the new colours.

It looks absolutely brilliant so far, i can't wait to see her when she's done.

Will hopefully get the covering job done in a few days then start the build, ya never know, with a bit of effort i could maybe get the job done in a week or so.

Cheers,

Zen

Hey guys. Here comes the first of several stupid questions posts. (you've been warned)

I've got wife approval for the BME edge. I have my shopping list made up and would like some feedback from you guys. This will be my first gasser, so I'm a little grey on a few things.

Edge 540 III (of course)
DA-50-R
DA-50-R Muffler (should I get the tuned muffler)
Menz 22x8 prop (not sure which prop to start with)
Motor mount (not sure where to get the DA mount, does it come with one)
Fromeco battery pack with regulators 2x2400 lith Ion RX 1x 2400 lith Ion for ignition (dumb question, does the engine come with the ignition)
MPI power switches (will standard MPI J-connector charge/switches work) (told you i was dumb)
Futaba R148DF 8-Channel FM receiver (should I go PCM)
4 x Hitec 5945MG Servo's for Aileron's & Elevators
1 x Hitec HSC-5955 Servo's for Rudder
1 x Futaba S3151 Servo Digital Sport BB (throttle)
1 x Futaba S3004 Standard Ball Bearing Servo (choke)

Is there anything I'm forgetting? I plan to buy the VIII and I understand it comes with CF pushrod's & lots of goodies.

Thanks in advance guys & pardon my ignorance. BTW, I sure do have a lot of guys at my field telling me to get a WH. I'm stickin with the BME though and already ordered it, so don't try and talk me into a WH. hehe

tuwood,

Your list looks good. When you order the DA just ask for the 3" stand offs instead of the stock 2-1/2. The manual comes with a template for setting up the DA so there's no worries there. Prop is fine and whats recommend for break in anyway. You can experiment later with props. Choke servo is optional and I no longer run one. I don't know what muffler choice your referring to. Perhaps someone that has installed a can or tuned pipe can respond on that.

I have flown the WH Edge and trust me, you made the right choice. If any of those guys that recommend the WH actually have one, hand them the radio once you get your's finished. The guys that were flying WH's in my club last year are all now flying BME's. The WH is a good buget plane for someone just starting with limited funds. But if your going to do it...best do it right the first time.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. For the muffler, I just saw on DA's site they had two:
DA-50-R Muffler: $69.00
DA-50-R Tuned Pipe: $195.00
Was just curious if the tuned pipe made that much of a difference in performance.

which 3 1/2" spinner are you guys using. Also, being my first DA engine, I'm not sure what type of adapter nut to get for the spinner.

thx

Tony

Chief Aircraft sells a Tru Turn 3 1/2 Ultimate style spinner all setup for a DA 50. It will take up a Manz 24x8 prop so any prop will fir in there. I got the lightened back plate one and really like it. There is no adapter needed. The spinner bolt screws right into the shaft of the DA 50.

This pic gives you an idea of how it looks.

tuwood,

The stock DA muffler is fine but you have to cut a bigger hole in the cowl, thats the $69 muffler. Not sure if the pipe would work on the Edge. DA also has Slimline Pitts for $99 when you buy the engine, you just have to ask. I use a Bisson FG spinner, so an adapter nut is not needed.

A pipe would give you a performance gain but the Edge is nice and light and it's got plenty of get up and go with stock exhaust.

Hi All,

Maybe not the correct thread for this question, but here goes anyway. I've got to the stage of painting the cowl, pants and undercarraige. I've got an acid etch primer for these parts, but what i need to know is, will the primer damage the carbon U/C in any way. I've never used this before and don't know much about puting this stuff on carbon.

It might be a stupid question, but i'd rather ask and look stupid now, than ruin a good undercarraige and look REALLY stupid later.

Cheers,

Zen

P.s. It's really starting to look good, fuse is covered and i'll do the wings tonight. No pics til she's finished though.

Thanks for all the great feedback guys. I think I've got it all on order now, so hopefully it will get here soon. The engine & some of the hitec's are backordered until the end of the month so I'm still a few weeks out. [&o]

I ended up going with the Slimline Pitts muffler, because it just looks cooler. [sm=thumbup.gif] Also, for those that are curious I attached a picture of the standard DA muffler, and the pitts.

I also did a little more digging & decided to go with PCM on the RX. Probably the biggest reason was that I couldn't find a single large scale setup that didn't have PCM. So, there must be something good about it.

Joe, I appologize if you posted this earlier, but how did you get the rainbow trim off? with heat?
I tried pulling some trim off of another plane & it didn't work out too well, but I'm not a big fan of the rainbow so I'd like to swap it out.

thx

No problem. Mine pulled right off with very little effort. No heat or fancy tricks.
