RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Bob,
No, I am not currently building anything right now. GS Corsair will be a future project but I dont have the space to build. So its ARFs only for now. Sad but true [&o]. Strictly warbirds though, if that means anything.
Mike,
Gonna be chilly Thursday...turn the heater in the garage on for sure now. Hate to see paint cracks this late in the game.

I have had my GS Corsair in the box now for four years. I've got the struts, the cockpit kit and the front faux engine. That is as far as I have gotten. While I should have had it built by now, my friend dragged me into a different direction. I love building these things, but now I'm building Phaser's, Tricorders and alien weaponry.
Come say hi if you have the chance,

One of these days I'll get back to building...

I have used the poly on five large Warbirds. The Blue can poly mini-wax is water base, and the surface should be first brush coated with Deft Sanding Sealer, available at Home depot... The Gold can is polyurathane and does not need the sealer.. I used .58 cloth, applying two coats of poly, and the third coat mixed with talcum powder...When dry, this can be wet sanded with 320, and any weave showing can be recoated.. I use rattle can gray auto primer over this, generally two coats sanding the last with 400wet...Just be patient and carefully sand anyplace that isnt glass smooth.. Really a slick way to apply the glass...Just drop the brush in a can of water till the next coat..
If you would like a photo of a finished plane, I will need your Email add. I'm not experienced enough on this to send them otherwise....

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Cimara,
I was having the problem with my exhaust on my cub, what ever I used for solder the heat from the exhaust port would get so hot that my extensions would fall off. Until my very good friend solved the problem. he use to work as a plumber at a sub base where he had small pieces of solder rod left over, this rod used with a very grainy flux mixed with water and the (copper pipe I used) heated with a torch till it got cherry red then apply the rod to the heated pipe and what do you know problem solved. So in answer to your question do you know any plumbers ? and is there a sub base nearby?
I've been told that silver solder and silver solder flux will work, but have not tried it.
Geo.

RCPilot78, I test flew my Top Flight GS Corsair Sunday a week ago. She was balanced per the manual.
5 3/4th inches back from the leading edge at the fuse, gear up. Had to add about 2 pounds of lead to get
there and she flew great. Don't forget to balance yours with the gear up. Engine is a US Engines 41cc
final weight 23 pounds.

Thanks Callahan....good to hear from someone who has actually flown the bird.....I like to bring the CG forward of the published setting...on the first flight...in an earlier post someone suggested 1/2 inch forward of the published CG...thats where I am thinking of starting....maybe someone has a different point...dosen't hurt to ask questions and be sure...!!!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
sorry guys about the test thing just changed to DSL and trying to get everything working.
RCPILOY78
my first G/S T/F Corsair flew great at the published C/G but the landings were a little flakie, it wanted to snap when it got slow and close to the ground, So on the new one I put the C/G 5/8 fwd, it will increase the landing speed but should eliminate the snap, and I will most likely move it back about 3/8 after the first few flights, just depends on stall test at 3 mistakes hi.
Cimara
First those pic lok great nice woork, I am partical to Alum mtl for the muffler as I think it gets rid of the heat better, but you eather have to weld it or have excess to a shop that will Alum brase in an oven, when I build my next big Corsair I will use a (Keleco)spelling custom exhaust and Dion's idea for the exit points, get a pound of molders clay from an art store (Hard), put a temp frame in you F/G cowl to hold its shape and use the clay to shape the scoop lay the glass over and when finished just digg out the clay, but a question, as memory serves me the only Corsairs that had chin scoops were the ones that had the corn cob engines, which ment a longer cowl and moving the fire wall back, Don't remember the mod numbers.
Mike
Did you glass you bird and if so how did you only get 23 pounds,my new bird is covered with plastic and it is at 22+
George
Still waiting for your pic's PLEEEASE
Cheers Bob

Bob,
I don't think the Super Corsairs had a chin scoop. They did have a bit of a weird design on the top of the fuselage behind the cowl and I can't locate a picture of one with a chin scoop.
The exhaust you're looking for is Keleo Creations and Kelvin does really nice work at a fair price:

Cimara,
The F2G "Super Corsair" was built only by Goodyear and in very limited numbers. It used a P&W R-4360 four row radial engine rated at 3,000hp for that install. It is commonly referred to as a "corncob". Howard Hughes used them on the Spruce Goose...

Those pic's look great. what type of spray gun do you use? Are working to a time table? or just till you get tired of it, and just putting it together and go fly, a copula of scalers in this area tell me thats about it, as you never get done.
Cimara & Zeeb
Guys you are both right I guess my brain is going bad. Found my folder of pic's and there was the -4 staring at me with a chin scoop. ya the bomber "Peacemaker" They flew from about 1948 to 1960, they had 6 of the big radials as pushers, and 4 gas burning jets out at the wing tips. Still no scanner, tried to take pic of a pic with my digital cannon but lens is not for close ups.
Any time George and don't let my ramblings rush you, its just I know I will be building another big Corsair just not sure how soon it will start, trying to gather all of the tips on how too's as I think this one will probably be a 2 winter project
Cheers Bob
