RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Gibbs The 62 would be ok to just put around the field but if you want to reinact dogfights it wouldnt do . I dont think it would have the power to get that kind of performance .David was that 62 new ? Did it have the prop adapter with it? thats a real good price.

Tomcat 104,
Have you started building your Top Flite Giant Corsair? The pictures are of the Meister 100" Corsair. I think 100" is about all a guy really needs. Why do you want to go bigger? What scale would 100" be? I don't think any plane that is sheeted should be covered and especially not a War Bird. I am going to glass mine. You got one heck of a good deal on that G62. Check out Meisters web site and take a look at it.
cimara,
I will go with the GT80 for power reasons. Your probably right and I want power to get out of trouble if I need to.

Tomcat and cimara,
Here is one built from scratch just from the plans. I don't know if he had someone cut it or if he did. To those of you that want to discuss the Top Flite build as I do also this will be the last I say on this forum about the Meister Kit. I will PM from now on.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
cimara,
It did come with a prop adapter and it was a real good price (I thought). I had to watch and wait for about 4-5 months but, I was in no hurry so I guess it's true that "good things come to those who wait". I'm half-heartedly looking for a DA-150 or 3W-150 for my next project. I thought a larger Corsair would be approprate. If your building (which I am) an 86" Corsair is an 100" Corsair enough of a step up? Please remember I suffered a stroke and was hospitalized back in August 2004 and my thrill is building right now. I can't fly because of my right hand but I can build with my left hand pretty well. I just thought bigger would be easier for me and I didn't want to let Gibbs down.
I want your opinion and eveyone else's too. I want to build ahother Corsair this time with folding (and detachable) wings. Again I thought bigger (to a point) might be easier.

Tomcat aka david
About the size, That is not the question, as I see it it is what you feel comfortable with it is your time and $$$ and your skill level they all kinda have to come togather, The three view I have shows a wing span of 491" so a true 1/4 scale would be 122.75 and There are some laser cutters that cut that size.
Just my 2 pennies worth

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
If I understand what rt3232 said it is all about one's comfort level. I have no comfort level right now because all I can do is build, and see every project that I start completed. When I started building my skill level was a lot lower than it is today and my $$$$ comfort level is OKAY since I had to give up EVERYTHING ELSE. When I start a project I don't think of which flying season will it be ready, I think of which year or decade will it be ready. Like right now there's a 148" B-24 partialy built in my garage that my Dad flew in. He passed away almost 30 years ago and my motovation on that project is way different than it is on other projects. That's the point I was trying to make AND ask for everyone's help on; is the jump from 86" to 100" enough? Would you be happy with a 100" plane over a 120" or a 141" plane? I can get a kit cut 141" that is no problem but can I get all the accessories I need in that size? I'm not out to reinvent the wheel, I'm just thinking about what comes after my TF Corsair so, help me with your opinions please.

I was not trying to offemd you I was just trying to say pick a project that will keep you motiveted when ever you finish, it is just importent to keep moveing ahead, and your project will never be finidhed, its just done to that point. I still don't belive the size is the inportant thing, and yes bigger is probly easer when you have a minor handycap.
By the way how is your rehab comming?? PM me.
Sorry fro the miss under standing

Guy's,
I think the 100" is plenty and will be very impressive at the field. The other things to consider is the cost difference when you start to get up in the 120" to 140" range. I think the 100" will be all I can afford. That is how I make my decisions on what size to build. Tomcat_104, I think in your situation you should build what ever size you want and if it's 141" go for it. I don't know where you will get the accessories though. For the cowling I spoke with Craig at Fiberglass Specialties and he said he would make it. The thing is he doesn't have the plug, so you have to turn a wood one on a large lathe and then prime and paint it. He said then he would make a mold for $300.00 and make the cowling for $75.00. Thats $375.00 right there. Thats my point I don't have a way to make a plug out of wood and I sure don't want to pay $375.00 for the cowling. He did say he would ship the plug back to you because it is yours. I think when you get to that size plane your looking at around $5000.00. That out of my reach. Plus the cost of a Divorce would be even more!

Guys
You can make a cowl on the the fuse rermove it make a female lay up in it let cure, remove the lay up and make your own cowl, or just use the bilt up cowl, once finished on the out side, you can trim the inside to what ever config you need..
I have done this several times and had good results, if you need or want details I will try to help

Sorry Gibbs
I have never documented the process, as it is one I was tought when I worked in the model shop at Convair back in the early 50's, I know the shops of today use different mtls but the steps are the same. It realy helps if you have a plastic resins supplyer in your aera

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I started my TF GS Corsair build at 12:00 noon on the first day of this year. I have the tail feathers built and I am working on the midwing section today. I am glad I found this thread as there is tons of useful info here. I am only on page 10 so far.
Just to intrduce myself my name is Daren. In my build I intend to use a G62, robort retracts, scale cockpit, nav lights, mechanical gear doors and a film covering. I have a particular corsair I am modeling after but this is more of a sport scale build than true scale.
This is my first giant scale warbird. I have built the 60 sized TF corsair and I have a 77" wingspan 3D plane. Combine the 2 and add nearly a foot of wing and I am an expert
Well thats all for now getting back to the threads.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
cimara,
I made my vacuum forming box from an idea I found here on RCU. It works great for me and should for you as well. You can make yours any size as long as it will still fit in your oven. Here is what I use.
While I am certainly no expert I have done a fair amount. While my techniques are certainly not the only way, nor the most technically advanced, they have proven to work well in most applications and require no exotic materials (in other words, it's cheap!). To get started using my methods will require the purchase and/or creation of the following:
1. a forming box, easily constructed
2. a source of vacuum , like a shop-vac
3. a frame to hold your material while heating and forming
4. a source of heat, such as household oven
5. a method of holding your frame and material off of the oven rack while heating
Below is a picture of my forming box. The outside dimensions of the box are 10x12 inches and it's approximately 3 inches deep. The size of the box is really unlimited so long as your source of vacuum has enough capacity to evacuate the box quickly. Mine is constructed of 3/4 inch MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) but plywood or particleboard, etc. will work just fine. The forming bed of the box is 3/16 inch pegboard. The box needs to be as air tight as possible so silicone sealer is used in all corners and for attaching the pegboard for a tight seal. Also visible is the hole for inserting the vacuum hose. This is just a slip fit but it must be a good one so cut accurately. Just for reference, a small 1-gallon shop-vac is sufficient for the box.
Well I still can't get pictures to load so if you want to see a pic PM me your email address and please, please tell me what I'm doing wrong in getting pictures to load.

Tim's right! Fiberglass and paint, forget the film. Fiberglass is light weight if done right and it is way more scale. My LHS knows me and when I built my first 60 size Corsair they refused to sell me film. Even they knew better. Do whatever makes you feel good but think about fiberglass - REAL HARD!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
i ordered nav lights , strobes and beacon lights from wingspan models. they do the huge b-17 kits that are 100 % scale in 3 sizes. i was thinking that if the real corsair had a gun cam why cant i mount a wirless cam in the scale location? weight would be negligible.
Im usuing the great planes isolation mount and am mounting a g-62. i doubled the firewall to 1/2 " and the mount plate is 1/4 so im going to double that too! I have to order a bell mount for the engine from B&B specialties.
I hear the main gear is being shipped out so i may get mine soon! If I can be under 30# ill be happy the g-62 is a powerful engine. I have a 26# p-47 with a g-46. She flys but i wish id have a 62 in her! someday i will.
Glassing makes the airframe much stronger if anyone has questions pm me
