RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying
I'm still using the stock retracts and I've recently been having a problem with one of my gears not retracting fully. I took the gear doors off and they seem to work fine that way, but I'm wondering what I could adjust to be able to put the doors back. I've taken the retracts out and attempted to adjust them, but I can't find anything that helps. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate them.
If I can't figure out how to do this, I've been thinking about going with oleo struts. I'm trying to stay within a budget and was wondering if anyone has used the VQ Warbirds oleos or make any other cost-effective suggestions.

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying
My p 47 stock retracts at times would not retract all the way. I checked all the linkage adjustments and every thing was ok. I found that when I change the wheels to foamies( they dont weigh as much) they would retract as they used to. The problem seems that the pushrod wire starts to bend as they get older and weak. Since then I have changed all my Hangar 9 warbirds to foamies and no more problems. Besides the planes dont bounce around as much when taxing or when landing. Hope that helps.

Good Day All
This is not a reply to anything I just wanted to say that this is a great forum of peaple with a lot of info on this and many other aircraft.
I have picked up some very useful info including the pts p-51 pages which I earned my wing's with last year and the p-47 that I am getting ready for this coming season.
Also thought I would try and send a couple pic's of the p-47, it's getting closer.
Take care and keep her in the air...

Hi, did anyone installed a seperate battery pack for the stock mehanical retracts? I was thinking to put a 900mah nimh for retract and JR 1100mah nicd for receiver.
Just want to know what is all your experience's with this?

I figured I would post some more pic's of my progress of my H9 P-47 No Guts No Glory
She still need's a few more mod's, more for my own taste than anything.I am thinking of putting cooling duct work from engine compartment to where the scale exhaust would exit, that way I would not have to cut any more holes in the cowl for cooling and still debating on installing a carbon rod through the horizantal stab for strength.
Still have to go over everything and locktite and check everything is tight and working correctly, but she is just about ready for spring, come on spring hurry up...

Good Day
I almost forgot to say thank's for all the tip's in building this arf.
I can't remember who it was that posted the aluminum gear door idea but thank's again, aluminum work's like a dam to conform to the wing.
Thank's again to everyone on this thread for all the good tip's...

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying
I just finished and flew my Jug Saturday. WOW! I think it easier to take off and land than the other Hanger 9 warbirds. Good flying airplane. I have a satio 100 with an onboard glow to keep the idle down - mounted engine as instructed. With two batterys up front and servos in the tail - the CG was right on target. I am having an issue with one side of the gear not wanting to retract in to the well when retracting in flight. I have to get the gear up at slow speed - I think it's hitting on the back side of the well. It works well on the ground so I think it's just the wind pushing the gear back just enough to make it not line up. I think I may have to spend the money and replace the gear with robart retracts. The belly pan was like the ones listed in this post - formers fell out and the paint is not fuel proof. The covering on the plane was very good, not one wrinkle. I think this plane is a great flying plane that looks good - glad I got one.

Well, I am following Dasintex's lead and I modified my P-47 to take Robart retracts and have a two part door. I've attached a picture of how they currently look, but I have a GDC door sequencer sitting here and have the inner gear doors made. I just need to finish and attach them, along with two microservos. As soon as it's all done I'll post some more photos.

I have been thinking of getting the H9 60 size P47. Anyone care to comment on how it flies and how it handles those windy days. Here in SWVA. the wind blows 15-20 a lot of the time.
Thanks

RE: H9 60 Size P-47 Thunderbolt-Build & Flying
We have our share of windy days in central FL, too. It handles very well in the wind. I can't say enough good things about this bird. The only bad habit I have found is that it does get a little bit of a tail wag during really windy days, but it's really not that bad. It slows down very nicely for landings and with a little practice you can grease it in easily. Right now it's my favorite (it was tied with my H9 Twist, but it kinda broke in half recently). If you fly off of a grass field, keep the grass short and the field smooth, and the stock retracts will last a long time. I finally got interested in upgrading to pneumatics and installed some Robarts, but it really wasn't a necessary upgrade. One of the wheels wasn't retracting all the way up with the gear doors on, but there are fixes for that. I highly recommend this plane to anybody.

Just about got my p-47 ready for its first flight working on the cowl right now and was thinking about not installing the dummy engine just yet may be after a few flights when the new magnum 91 gets broken it good. so will it fly OK with out it. I know it will not look as good but right now I just want to get it in the air.

I've seen multiple pics of retract installs (including my own ), but I need to know how everybody is cooling their engines. I've got a replacement cowl as the other one was on it's last leg after a nasty noseover and I'm rethinking how I did the cooling holes.

Try not cutting all of the holes out of the dummy engine. I cut about a third of them out and opened up the bottom of the cowl a bit to let the air flow thru. With the satio 100 inside it seems to be cooling just fine.

Well, I'm finally finished fooling with the retracts. Here are some pics and a short video of the finished product. It's not the prettiest thing, especially up close, but I learned a lot in the process. Thanks to Dasintex for the tips.

I got the doors to close so tightly by making my own plywood that fit the curve of the wing following [link=http://www.top-flite.com/techsupport/topa0415tech.html]this tech tip[/link]. Thanks for the compliment.

Kojak Dave;
Excellant retract job; They look great, even better than mine; how do you like that GDC Sequencer? I wasn't sure how it would work with the micro servos to open the inner gear doors, I had assumed that it only worked with operating Airvalve servos; I would have went this route and saved on the costs and work with my install when I used 2 small Air cylinders to open the doors and the extra Airvalve and servo; your set up would have been cheaper and it looks like it works great; does the GDC allow you to adjust the servo travel or did you just adjust the travel mechanically? I don't recall; anyways, an excellant job on the retract upgrade. Interesting, I used that same Tech Tip to formulate my plan as well, coolstuff.
