Regarding Ralle’s decals, the MDC, and the canopy measurements I asked you for earlier, I told Ralle that you’d had a decal set for the Fox Hawk. Ralle replied that he’d used his Thorpe Bros 1/7th scale Hawk file to produce your decals and MDC, and he needed confirmation that the canopy dimensions were indeed the same.
So I asked Jim for the measurements and he sent me figures which I’ve added to the diagram below. A quick inspection of the diagram shows that either Jim told me the figures the wrong way round as the front canopy section is clearly longer than the rear one, or the Thorpe Bros-based MDC which you have might not fit properly, assuming that the Thorpe canopy layout matches the scale drawing.
I emailed the diagram back to Jim for confirmation but he couldn’t download it, so Ralle is still no closer to knowing whether the measurements he is using for the Fox hawk are OK.
So please can you run a ruler over your canopy and tell us what the required figures are so that I can advise Ralle?

Thanks Paul. That's OK. Everyone has been well satisfied with the cockpit arrangements to date. I've emailed Ralle with the figures so that he can adjust the MDC if required.
Boy but does yours look good in that all-red finish! It positively radiates! I'm wondering now whether I should have ordered red and gone for the Red Arrows scheme instead of a white one, which will be the basis for the Boscombe Down scheme I've planned on doing.
Cheers

Paul, thanks for the info on the photos. The build does look really good. I have found a video that Ron Appleton took at Odiham in 1991, before he passed away, and you're in it with your Paul Gray built up Hawk. Getting it on to DVD and will send you a copy. You were really slim then.

Hi Bob
I'll be using a Schuebeler DS94, Lehner 2250/15 (740 rpm/V) and Schulze 40/160 on 12S 6600mAh Thunderpower Extreme Lipos. I haven't run the setup on the Extremes as I've only just bought them and I don't have a plane. However, based on what Chris True gets from his Neu 1521/2y (780 rpm/V) I'm expecting over 3kW ( = 4hp to any glow guys reading this). I don't know if you were aware Bob, but Jim is also doing an EDF version of the Hawk. From what I can gather, Jim's prototype will probably have two 5S packs in series mounted one each side of the fan unit (I don't know which unit), like the BVM EDFs. I don't think my batteries will fit there, and in any case the wing will have to come off for re-charging which I don't like. So I will probably have to move the fan back, inserted via a new hatch, and place my batteries between scratch-built intake ducts, removable through the cockpit hatch.
I'm getting all excited about this project
Cheers

I don't know if you are aware but the whole top comes off (there are 2 hatches), including the piece over the engine bay.
You should be able to charge through there

Hi Paul
Though re-charging lipos in a plane might be safer these days with the advent of reliable balancer systems with feedback to cut the charger if there's a problem, I still won't do it, and always design my planes so that I can easily and quickly remove the batteries for re-charging. The likely 45 minutes to 1 hour re-charge time for lipos is too long between flights in any case.
Right from when I began in electrics back in about 1997, I have always taken a number of flight packs to the field and have never understood why others built their packs immovably into the airframe - planes etc are too expensive to sit around whilst re-charging, and no fun either whilst that's happening.
In the case of the Hawk, I'll be taking four ready-charged 12S 6000mAh packs, a couple of chargers and a big lead-acid so that in a flying session I'll get 5 or 6 flights by re-charging the packs from the first two flights. To me that's the only way that flying electrics becomes acceptable, since I can then "re-fuel" any time I want to, just as if I was flying glow or turbine.
FWIW, the 12S packs will be made up from the 6S packs I use when flying my prop planes. I can use the same fuel for an aerobatic bipe as for a jet which spreads the battery cost a bit and sorta makes for some kind of economy measure (at least that's what I keep telling myself )
From experience I expect that my fan unit will go just aft of the rear top hatch. I see from your right-hand pic above that there are some panel lines moulded in which might make good cut lines, though I might decide to insert the fan from the underside.
Your fuz looks a real beaut. Will you be fitting the big wing on this one?

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread
Update.
Things are moving on at a reasonable pace.
Side 2 has its stripe, and the thin white line is around the canopy.
The black Ariel has been made from ply, sanded, sanding sealer, then black satin enamel.
I have started on the cockpit wells so may have some more to show tomorrow.
I am very pleased with this Hawk. Although the 1st was OK this is just that bit better.
Gordon, I understand now
Also with regard to the wing, Fox Comp are designing a optional slightly larger wing for club flying.
It will make the plane that bit safer for small club fields where tight turns may be necessary, and take off runs are restricted.
It will not replace the current wing, but will be an option.
As I fly most of the time from a small field I will be using the new wing.
Fox Comp are working on it now, hope to get delivery soon. [8D]

Great pics - lots of ventilation too which'll be helpful
I've ordered the big wing too, because my Hawk won't be any lighter when landing than when it took off
Cheers

On a slight off topic, read over your review of the Savex F16 and liked the way you mounted the servo to the noseleg retract, have you anymore pics of this ? would like to see it in a retracted position.
Sorry forget about the above, I knew I had seen this somewhere else and it was on here at the start of your first build !! all the details I need are there thanks anyway.

Chaps
Slow day today, had my Grandmothers funeral, she died a week ago 104.5 years old.
Funny to think that when she was born the Wright bothers had not flown yet! and the Titanic was not built!
Anyway i have managed to do a bit more on the cockpit.

No she led a normal life, i think she smoked when she was younger, liked a sherry now and then.
She was born on a farm in Wales and it was pretty rough then, candle light, no heating etc.
She had all her faculties up till 6 months ago.
She still used to go to the shops when she was 102!
We shall miss her.

Hi Paul,
The wingspan advertised on Jim's website is 53". Do you know the span of the optional "Sport wing"?
Best regards,
Eric
