Hey,

The Solo prop costs more than the kit! When I ordered mine for the 1/4 scale Corsair it came to $315.00. The only difference was the length of the blades and that didn't amount to much but Carl is about to raise the price about $100.00 so if you want one get it NOW!!![X(]

Just a friendly warning,

George

My mind still thinks I am 25, but my body says I am full of -----t

And my hanger gueen has not flown as yet, got out with the cub one time and then back to wind and rain, went out with the big weeks and got 2 flights 38 went leen in the middle of flight so had to make a down wind landing, broke prop and my pride was badly bent. now we are back to wind 15 to 25 and predicted for next 5 days[]

Still plugging along on the 47 boy you get 4 of these big birds and you run out of shop space in a hurry.

Gibbs

I think the solo is a great thing I just cant justify the cost when you cant see it when its running anyway.

Bob,

I am nuts and thats why I had to have it. I am also going to try my luck in competetion and the judges will notice. It's not for everyone. The weather here in Wisco has not been cooperative as far as wind either. I'm happy I build or I would be going crazy by now.[&:] Think of all the BARF pilots and what they are doing. They say they don't have time to build well here is the time.

Hey guys,

We're not alone! Some of you have spoken of this 5 cylinder radial but this is the first time I've seen it. Plus that's a big Corsair!

David,

I wonder why he doesn't show the Canopy and Cowling. I bet he can't get one for it or is waiting to have some one make them for him. That thing is 18"s bigger than mine. I know of a 152"er on the Warbirds and Warplanes photo Forum. He has a Canopy and Cowling on his. He had to make them himself. His Corsair looks good even though he did have to make them himself. I wouldn't have the first clue as to how to make the Canopy. I could lay up a cowling if I had to. The bids are not even getting close to what that guy has invested in the 138"er in your post. I wonder why he is dumping it. Well to each and there own. There your chance for a big one David and you couldn't touch even the one I am getting done like his for under $7,000.00 or more.

Gas Oil mixture Question,

On my new 3W 200cc engine it says the oil/gas mix should be 1:50 to 1:80. I have never had an airplane Gas engine other than the G-62 and never took it out of the box. I have mixed oil for outboard engines but they were 25 to 1 or 50 to 1. Is 1:50 50 to 1? 50 parts gas to 1 part oil? Let me know so I can break it in properly on a soon to be built test stand.

Thanks,

Gibbs

Barry,

I didn't even think about the cowl and canopy. I wrote him and asked him why he was getting rid or it. I was so impressed with that radial motor that I missed the C&C. Also the picture of the two props was awesome. I can't wait until you start yours!

Yes, 1 part oil to 50 parts gas.

50 parts oil and 1 part gas would be the thickest fuel I have ever seen, unless you are running a diesel engine.

Most weed wackers and such run that light oil mixture.

Barry,

Man you can start a HUGE argument on this question and it's been fought over and over on the gas engine forum...

I'll give you a couple of thoughts and maybe a synopsis of what I've read and use for my little gassers. Then you might do a few searches over there and you'll see how much has been said about your question.

Most manufacturers of the "built for model use" engines recommend a 32/1 for about 4 to 5 gallons while breaking in the engines, then they'll go to something with less oil, i.e. DA says you can run 100/1 of a particular Amsoil product. ZDZ which I run, says 40/1 after break in now where they used to recommend 50/1 after breakin.

Then there is the argument about dino vs. synthetic oil and that goes on and on.

After all the reading I've done and some experimentation I'm currently running the Pennzoil Air Cooled stuff at 40/1 on my ZDZ's and it seems to be okay, but I plan on trying a couple of others if I can find them without having to order the stuff by the case on the Internet. I think everyone on the gasser forum would admonish you to make sure whatever you decide on, that the oil meets the TC service spec as that is for air cooled two cycle engines vs. the TMW-3 (I think that's it) which is for marine type two cycle engines which will run cooler than the air cooled and thus have lower requirements for the oil in certain areas of the spec.

Generally speaking, I think if you follow the manufacturers recommendations you should be okay especially if you happen to have any problems requiring warranty work they'll deny it if you did not follow the recommendations. Personally I don't like the idea of running these little guys at less than a 50/1 mixture and other than a bit more to clean up, I see nothing wrong with the 40/1.

If you're going to run it on a test bench, which I would not recommend, make sure you watch the heat build up using a small infrared thermometer reading between the top two fins on each cylinder between runs. They'll get hot REAL quick running on a stand and that can toast an engine. Most folks who've been around them, as well as some manufacturers will tell you not to run them on the ground for breakin because of this possible over heating problem.

Oh, one other thing. What ever oil you choose to use, make sure it's rated for the mix you plan to use i.e. 50/1. Most of the oils I've seen are rated for 32/1, 40/1 or 50/1 but nothing higher. Some are only rated for higher oil concentrations like 25/1. So if you go with the 80/1 or higher make sure it says on the bottle that ratio is approved...[8D]

zeeb,

Thanks for the warning on the test bench idea. I will not do that now. I don't want to toast a $1900.00 engine. As far as the mixture I think I will run it at the 40 to 1 from break in on unless it doesn't like the extra oil after break in. You have been very helpful. I appreciate your knowledge very much.

Thanks,

Gibbs

Dummy Radials,

I just found out that William Brother's sells Wasp 3 D dummy radials fully detailed amd painted for you guy's TF Giant for $95.00 and the one I need for $109.00 They are 9 cylinder engines and look like they are the real deal. Here is a picture of the 1/8 scale they sell. That's the biggest one they had a photo of. I'm having them e-mail me the picture of the 1/4 scale engine and they said the 1/5 scale looks identical except for size. I'll post it when i get it. You can see the Wasp dummy in Model aviation News last edition.

Wasp radial,

Here are a couple pictures of the 1/4 scale dummy radial by Wasp. This particular builder didn't use the rear half of the cylinders due to engine clearence. There is one with it complete with the Solo Hub and Dome and one without the engine in it. You have to admit it is pretty nice looking. The only drawback is the high price. You can also make modifications to it if you like. I will be putting spark plug wires on mine and a dummy exhaust ring. But I guess you get what you pay for.[8D]

Well finally getting to post some pics of my finished Corsair. This is from the USS Essex from 1942-1943. It has been a long project but all turned out well. Great flying Corsair I am very pleased. A few things about it, Almost 31lbs, G-62, Robart Retracts, extended the tail wheel about 3/4", doors with air cylinders using a UP valve. Glassed, rivots, panel lines. Special thanks to Doug T, Bruce, Steve from Onsight Signs for the paint masks. Hope you like.

Dupont Automotive for base color and PPG flat for the clear. Used Dupont thinned down for the airbrushing also.

Thanks for the info Warks .I am making progress The frist 2 pics is the mod i did to the tail so i could put a tail hook in it wont be functional just for looks .The last 2 is the 1 inch radius on the fuse for cooling and for the exhaust to exit the the cowl .I knoew i need to install the fire wall but the hole isolation mount is confusing me.If i do it jaus like the instrutions say the prop shaft is of center by i gusse 1/8 inch with out the isolatin mount it comes out centered .So my question is should i move the engine over to center it up?

The details take forever

George (ctflyboy), 30 1/2 lbs. But it flys light does not feel heavy at all in the air. I would reccomend full flaps unless in a gale. Plane has a nice decent. 1 1/2 lbs lead at the firewall even with the G-62.

Winston (cimara), I would center it up. I used the isolation mount from Great Planes just like the instructions said. Seems to work nicely. I am ready for primer on my TF Mustang now and I used the same mount on it also with a G-62.

I know this might be controversial since there are those here on this thread who believe in them, but...

NOBODY in IMAC or pattern gasser powered stuff is running isolation mounts anymore. While I don't have a GS gasser powered Warbird yet, I do have several GS gasser powered IMAC birds and none of them have isolation mounts.

The consensous of opinion from the guys who do a lot of GS gasser installs, is that unless you have someone who is knowledgeable enought to setup the mount for your specific engine/prop/airframe combo, that you'll do more damage to the model than you'll prevent.

This information is from the gas engine forum and includes such individuals as Dick Hanson who has been doing this stuff for longer than a lot of us have been alive. He still does reviews on new equipment for various publications and happens to live about 20 miles from me.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I'll take his and other long time users opinions on soft mounting engines.
