Have you ever wondered why some guys are so fast on the track? A lot of people like to believe Pavidis, Tebo, Caveleri, Mayfield and the rest of the National A-main'ers are fast because they have super dailed cars, modded engines and the best electronics. However, thats only a very small part of it. Others like to believe that those guys have been racing longer. Thats only a small part of it. I tend to believe you are nearly as good as you will ever be by your second year of racing. That still doesn't answer the question, "Why are those guys so fast?". Remotely controlling a car is 99% hand and eye coordination(reaction speed) which is inherent but can be improved with practice. Knowing what to do and when to do it is what it takes to keep a car on its wheels. Split second decisions make the difference. The really fast guys also have the ability to filter out the distractions, such as pressure from a following opponents. Distractions such as a racer gaining on you reduces you reaction time, and if you can't control this distraction you will end up on your roof. If you really want to be fast racer, you should spend less time setting up your car and spend more time setting up your mind.

youre absulutly right the more you go to the track and practice the better you will get. you did forget to mention that most of the big wig drivers are a bunch of trust fund babies and mommy/daddy paid their way through life to get them where they are at. half those guys will never have to get a real job. but hey thats just me.

So I guess hard work, skill, and detirmination has less to do with it than how much money mommy and daddy have?

Seriously, why even post something like this? T

here are people that have all the funds in the world and practice and still will never make it to a "pro" level of anything....haha take Vanilla Ice as an example...I saw that he was racing RC cars in Canada at a "pro" level but not really doing very well.

Split second decisions make the difference.
the top pro drivers don't make diciscons , after a while it becomes natural , you on't have to think anymore how to correct the car , you see hwt it does and you automaticly do whatever it takes to keep it from going 4 wheels up... at that level you simply don't have time to think...it becomes a second nature to most of them. and if not you will never get to the uber top.

I feel its mental aswell, being able to excel under pressure, the sport has very little to do with how much $$ you spend, setup does play a big part though i feel, getting a setup that works well for you can make a big difference. And desire, if you want it bad enough and are willing to do anything to get there, you will. I find i have to work alot harder at it than other drivers to get the same results, i go away to big meets and after the day is finished and most of my friends are drinking and socialising im back in my cabin/hotel room, fixing, checking, cleaning, double checking, i find i may not be able to outdrive them but i can out mechanic them, anything for the edge.

Its true, plus the skill of driving in general. I can race anything with two or more wheels pretty good for my first or second time out. I think 2 years a little short though, maybe 5 years of competitive racing like PC Pro series, SS, and stuff...

every fast driver started driving at the aged 12 to 17. at those ages, you learn the most.

after those ages, your skill level dont improve much.

Good points guys.
I will add mine: Being able to run multiple lines. There are some that can go out and put down nice lap times when they have the track to themselves, but cant run in traffic. I guess multiple lines could be linked to concentration. Next time you watch a race, the fast guys will run on whatever piece of track that is left for them, and everyone else will run right down the middle.

Dedication. Practise, practise and more practise. You are not limited by your age or your ability to learn (though of course if you have the dedication AND you started young, you have a huge advantage), or even your natural ability. Every aspect of this sport can be learned and improved with practise. Don't give up MrFranchise, if you want it badly enough, you'll do it.

Nothing will help you get faster than lots of track time. As stated by foxy42, practice, practice, practice and learn how to set up the car for the conditions presented.

Some people are naturals. Adam Drake for example has a friend take him to a race track in the early 90's and show him an RC car. Two years later he's a pro level sponsored driver. Xray driver Jason Branum picks up a car and now is blistering fast. IMHO at the two year mark, your racing skill level is close to its plateau. I now realize that I'm no natural racer, so I'm trying to find ways to go beyond my plateau that I'm stuck at right now.
