RE: Poulan/Electrolux 46cc
Who sells Xoar and are they composite.I like using a wood prop over a composite like APC.Apc's are heavy and help smooth out idle,I don't usually let my engine idol much anyway.I like to fly wide open.Have not tryed a carbon fiber yet.Iv heard that they are very expensive.Yes the 20-6-10 is Pro Zinger.I think Zinger makes a decent prop as well a MasterAirscrew(woody),not the plastic or nylon ones.Do you sell the exhaust for the 46,wraparound style like a bisson?

DA sells the Xoar prop. It is wood and not expensive. JMO but Zinger and MAS props are good for mixing paint, not flying planes I have tested so many props. I have over $800 worth of props here and the Zinger and MAS are the worst for pull and rpm. Once you go Xoar you will never go back.
I do sell mufflers for the 46. Just send me an email and I can give you all the info you need.

A little more polishing just to add some bling.Still waiting on the cowling from Reid's.I ordered it at the start of this thread. What could possibly be taking this long,,,,,,,,,,,
The cap on this Poulan seems like it's made of mangenese or magnesium.sure polishes like silver..

I'v noticed that also because I had it polished at the start and it dulled in a couple of weeks. This time I used Mother's brand metal polish and some wax.Maybe it will hold for a while now..I think this is magnesium alloy.I can't believe that Poulan would use this material for a chainsaw engine.Magnesium is half the weight of aluminum and just as strong. Is also expensive compared to other alloys...

Found this cool site on magnesium. Now I understand why Poulan would use this metal,To bad the whole engine is not made of it.Magnesium Alloys – An Introduction http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=355

I got a fish weigh scale today.Did'nt have anyway to get a pull except with the engine on the plane and pulling at the main landing gear.I double checked the scale before using it to make sure it was accurate. It pulled 25 lbs. and just a little bit over.I thought it was thirty pounds, but antway. My engine is far from "stock" Has modified ports, carb work and a micro screen between the sheild and manifold, and will probably pull better with a 22-8 instead of the 20-10 I used. Also this was with no exhaust at all.I don't no which way it will go with exhaust bolted on.I tryed to get my wife to take a picture of the scale while pulling, but she was scared of it,LOL.It is loud with no exhaust. Also my rpm meter busted on me so no telling of the rpm's it was turning.Strait 93 octane with Yamaha synthetic oil@40:1........I was thinking it would be stronger with gas/glow mix,but don't want to mess up the carb with the glow fuel.

RE: Poulan 46cc/S&S Electronic Ignition
Hello,Guys
I have been reading all your comments on converting Poulan & Homelite chain saw type engines.I have (1) poulan and (3) Homelites that I took in trade and I need to find a home for them, Looking in the exaust port, they Look new,it doesn't look Like they have been Run.
I will give some one or one's a good deal on them,or we could trade something? I have Pictures of these engines I could email to anyone. My Email, [email protected]. Thank you,Richard Larsen

Got the cowl today from Reid's Quality Models.Nice looking cowl.Fit my plane perfect.I was worried about the fit because mine is slightly larger than the plans.About a quarter inch to a foot larger. Now trying to decide what to do about the exhaust.Have only 1 1/4 inch between the firewall and cooling fins on engine.May have to go with a side exhaust. Here's some pics of the cowl.

RE: Poulan/Electrolux 46cc
Just read all the posts as I have converted one from a saw for a model just about completed. I have a lathe and mill/drill so did all my own work. I have also made a couple for friends.
The hub is in 2 pieces with the inside using the key and nut. The ext is held on with 6 10/24 screws with a 5/16NF centre. The bolt is potted on the inside so it is locked.(JB) I also made a new bottom end and mount as one piece. I have at this time gone with a CDI ignition and have it running on a test stand. No specs yet but will post some later if any interest.
Was searching for info on DIY ignition as I have a couple of other types I would like to do the same with. Being injured(right sholder) for the last 4 years gives me something to do and take my mind off of the pain and besides I like making things.
I like your conversion and just thought I would show you mine. Hope my jumping in does not rock the boat.
John

That is one awsome looking mount setup. I was thinking of trying the same theing. Just seems very time consuming I wonder what it weighs compared to the origional cover and a set of H9 mounts?

It's wrapped in foam with masking tape around it.Then its layed in a bed of foam that is in front of the fuel tank(sandwiched).

I bought a bisson custom from hobbydealsusa on ebay. They did'nt have packaging or paperwork on it and did not know exactly what it fit. They did however have the bolt span and mounting flange specs. With there supplied pic and specs I built the muffler in 3D on my computer. With what I came up with it would fit the Lj perfect with a little dremel work. Here's a pic.

RE: Poulan/Electrolux 46cc
The Poulan run good and strong. It does however have bad shake while idleing.Iv played with the carb, but that was not it.I played with the ign. timing, but that was dead on.Then I got to read several forums on porting 2 strokes and port timing. The poulan is set from the factory to be efficient and less air\fuel mixure waste,in other words very little scavage on the exhaust.Dremel time,I raised and widened the exhaust port matching the port itself and giving it a little arch at the top of the port instead of flat like stock.I would figure I raised it about 3\32,and widened it about 1\8.WOW,what a difference this makes.now it runs alot smoother, lost a little bottom end but what an increase on the top.won't get that good of gas milage now but was'nt really aiming on that from the start of this mod.It shook so bad before it broke off one of the elevator horns 6/10 allthread. Now it purrs off idle and pulls like a monster.

Question....does raising the exhaust port lesson the compression? Would a high compression engine tend to viabrate on idle? Thanks Capt,n[:-]

RE: Poulan/Electrolux 46cc
Raising the exhaust port shortens the compression stroke slightly,so in return it does lower the compression a little which is why it losses a little on the bottom end of the rpm range. It also shortens the power stroke, its now at 90%,the intake ports open at 119%,this give a 28% blowdown time or scavadge.Aircraft engines work from mid to upper end, therefore not effecting performance but smoothing out the idle.High compression engines would cause the shake I suppose. This 46 still has real good compression. To better the compression though,Im going to cut another ring grove above the one thats on it now and install a top ring. The piston has plenty of room for this. This will raise the compression heigth and boost power a little more.Iv also widened the transfer ports a little but, did'nt raise them.Ill be hooking up a scale sometime next week to see the the lbs it pulling now.Im going to a 20x8 from a 20x10 to allow a little more rpm's.

Can you provide more info on the microscreen you're using? The atomization of fuel droplets makes sense but I'm curious if the screen impedes intake flow.
Thanks for making the effort to share your work.
