60W may not be enough to cut 1/4" baltic birch though. Let me know if you think you can do it or have some one else out there that can cut it.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
You can always laminate two 1/8" pieces.
The cutter will be able to cut 18"x48" if memory serves.
Probably won't be up and running until the fall.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Ok,
All done,
I still need to get templates made for the cowl and canopy but that can be done a bit later.
Here are a few shots of it.
The cad system tells me that all the ply (baltic birch...stronger than lite ply but a tad heavier) and balsa (11lbs...not contest weight by any stretch) total just a tad under 7lbs. So I think it is reasonable to assume that after everything else is added into the mix, the final weight will be between 15.5 and 16.5 lbs. Not bad for a 90" wingspan!
The last two pics show the design relative to the three views I worked with. The only significant departure was shortening the wings a bit to make for a more square geometry and the rudder is obviously much bigger than the original.
Next up is getting the cut sheets together.
Cheers,
J

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
If it is not 10% it is close enough not to make a difference at a contest. I can always stretch it a couple inches in the future and if you go ahead and use foam cores, I can provide you templates for any wingspan you would like. The fuse has been lengthened more to about 35% scale and can easily accomodate a DA 100 if I ever decide to lengthen the wingspan back to scale. With that G62 and a pipe, you'll probably be at least 8oz heavier than a DA50 setup.

John

Hello SydDythers
Every thing looks great, as far as the 3 view of the 260 goes have you modified the design or exactly taken the outline of the drawing ?

Plans not available yet! Sit tight and I'll have something together soon. I just want to get the 260 knocked out and then I'll try and put some paper plans together that ppl can understand and that is no small undertaking.
Highfly, how's it going? From the pics I posted you can see that the fuse outline is pretty scale. The fuse sides are actually flat up to the back of the cowl, which is fairly common design practice due to construction simplification, but still follow the three views fairly closely. I have actually finished the stick construction on it and was fairly amused at seeing how big the fuse is. The front is 11" wide and I realized that the fuse is about 35% scale and the wings 31%. I could lengthen the wingspan about 15" and not touch the fuse and get the scale dimensions...I am curious what the added weight would be. A Brielli 60 would probably love it.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Jason, I sent you an email with the file.
For everyone else, here is the eYak plans. I still have yet to work on the 50CC version and may yet do another complete overhaul...I might be able to shed about 18oz off of the airframe while preserving the dimensions of Vers. II.
I am also posting a file with this message with a .txt extension that is actually a zip file with the dxfs for everyone to download. Just rename it after downloading it to plans.zip and unpack the two files it contains. You will need Autocad 2004 or later or a compatible viewer.
There is a dwg of the cutsheets and another that gives you a pretty good idea of how to assemble it properly. Make sure you print it out in 1:1 scale and you may need to tile together a few 11x8.5" sheets.
Pay special attention to keeping the fuse straight while assembling, especially when sheeting the rear turtle deck. All of the sheeting was actually designed to be 1/32" and not 1/16" so you can save some weight if you go to 1/32" Also, you could try substituting parts CB and FBF into stiff 1/16" balsa instead of Ply. With a 400 series inrunner, your weight should be around 23 to 24 oz all up but that may not be enough motor for 3Ding (although my himax was able to hover it). In the end, I went with a really powerful outrunner that I stick mounted and my total weight was 25.5 oz.
One other suggestion is to sheet the fuse sides below the rear turtledeck for added stiffness. I'll get some pics posted up of it 'in the bones' for reference.
If you have any questions, please post it in the forum for other people's benefit.
If you build and successfully fly one, let me know!
Cheers,
J

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Hey John,
Are you setting up your 260 with the DL-50 or a DA? I am thinking I might buy a DL for this plane and save the G-62 for another project. Will that cause you any grief at this point? If the engine box is big enough to cut the hole for the carb, I can adjust the rest to suit the required thrust washer location. This is scratch building after all...
Second question - what arrangements are you planning on for cutting a couple of kits? Are you getting a number of kits cut and I pay for a kit and the plans, or do I get plans only and arrange my own laser cutting?
Thanks,
Mark

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
I will fly it with a DL50 but it is actually set up for a DA50 to make it more accessible for those that already own the DA. The DL has the same mounting bolt pattern but is about 1/8" longer so there will be a small gap between the spinner backplate and the cowl. No grief for me since I was just going to give you an uncut firewall instead. I have precut the firewall for the carb to breathe. I personally don't design in offset, nor will the cowl have any. In this age of computer radios, it makes more sense and is more accurate, in my opinion, to mix right thrust offset into the radio rather than physically on the firewall. My yaks have flown really straight and true using this method.
I can email you some plans in dxf and you can get kinkos or equivalent to print them out locally. I am waiting on a quote for getting one cut so, if you don't mind being a guinea pig, I can get two cut simultaneously...I can't guarantee the design will be perfect yet. I managed to get in contact with my old laser cutter and it turns out that he is only doing special request cutting now from people that didn't stiff him on payment in the past. Fortunately I have been a good customer I am getting all the surface sheeting precut so if you don't mind doing by hand, it can drop the price a bit. About 20 sheets of 4x8x1/16" balsa are being cut for sheeting purposes. It will result in (hopefully) super accurate sheeting.
For the cannister
Up next for this project is finding someone who can vac form a few canopies and someone to cnc the surface hinging parts and control horns out of phenolic.
I've already completed the truss work and it is surprisingly strong despite the lack of any ply reinforcers at this point. Light and cheap to build ($10 of 1/4"x1/4" stringers) One pic has the DL50 near the F1 former location for reference. Pretty roomy fuse! Pardon the messy work area
Cheers,
J

An uncut firewall is perfect for me, I will adjust to suit as I go. When you get the quote, let me know the price with and without the cut sheeting. I am still leaning towards a foam wing and stab, so I will need to do a lot of sheeting work if I go that way. Is it possible to get only the fuse parts and root ribs cut? If I go with foam, I won't need all the wing parts. Do you want payment through Paypal or what? PM me if you want to keep details quiet and we can go from there.
Looks good so far to me. That's a messy work area?? Don't look too close at mine or my garage then.

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
I am using this outrunner motor: https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITED...idProduct=3886
It is equivalent to an Axi 2814 for $25! I rigged up a stick mount adapter for it with some 1/16" ply and the stick mount that comes with the Mini Funtana. Waaay too much power I think but I haven't had a chance to fly it. Pretty much any motor that flies the Hangar 9 Mini Edge should be enough for this design as they weigh about the same. A low watt inrunner 400 park flier motor such as the Himax 4100 would probably do the trick as well but you would have to push the motor prop combo a bit to get good 3D performance. I flew it with the Himax 4200 and found it could hover about 3/4 throttle so the 4100 might give it a bit better performance. The motor I have on it now should hover at about 1/3rd throttle!

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Hello All,
I have been asked by Brent to add to this post.
I have been building one of Brents 50cc Yak's.
I got started building one of his Planes by helping him cut Foam. (For nights) I seen how easy it was going together and I had to have one.
I can say this is a good design everything fits very well.
I have everything done but the hatch.
Will get to it this week.
I will get with Brent very soon and we will laying up one of his Cowls.

I laser cut the eYAK today and plan to build the airframe over the next week. I will keep you posted. I had to rearrange the cut sheets because I was working with my 24x18 laser. Nice design and I can't wait to see what it looks like together.

Hey John
Thanks again for the plans
Im getting it laser cut next week and cant wait to build it!
Just one question I have is what is the thickness of the balsa used to make the cowl rings?
Thanks again

RE: Rollin' my own 50CC Yak 54
Wow, great to see people putting this together. I will have to get you a few pics of the airframe in the bones which means stripping the first one I put together! I built it rather hastily and ended up putting a second one together more methodically that I am way happier with.
There are a few things such as material choices and build mods (with pics) that need to be pointed out and I'll get around to that very soon...maybe even tonight. I definitely overengineered the tail feathers. You can use way less balsa than shown on the plans. I would look at adding some carbon fiber reinforcement tape to the wing spars too. Anyhow, I'll point out all the relevant things shortly. Just don't start gluing away until I post something ok?
In case you didn't notice, there is no canopy templates in the plans. I'll put together something for you to work with. I am trying to get a couple places to do a short run on plastic vac form canopies but no guarantees. In the meantime, using pink foam as the base material along with the templates should get u a workable canopy and or plug if you want to make your own vac formed one. If you want, I could attempt to design a balsa planked canopy that wouldn't weight much more than a plastic one. For me, I ended up sanding a balsa block to shape and laid up a bit of glass cloth overtop with epoxy for the first one I made.
Jason, I need to double check but it should be 1/8" balsa. Anyhow, the plans I posted should have the sheet thickness labeled.
Cam flyer, I am really jealous you have a laser cutter to play with!
What motors are you guys going with?

Don't be jealous SydDythers, we all have our needs! It's a need to create for me, check out my site:
[link=http://CharlotteAircraftModeling.com]CAM[/link]
I would be glad to post your build sequence pictures on my "Builder of the Model" page.
I don't know the engine size yet, there is an e guy at my field and I plan to turn it over to him. I am still a gaser and was looking for something small for it. The tail design looks strong on paper!

Cam
Where are you in Charlotte. I am just south of you in Lake Wylie. I would love to talk to you about these yaks. Your laser cut parts from Johns files look great!!!!
Where do you fly?
I am just about finished fixing my yak and Russ is about done with the one I cut for him. The one he is building is looking great. I still need to lay up a cowl for his plane. I just finished one for Mine. I made a couple of changes in my process. I am now priming the mold before laying the gel-cote. The finished produce it fantastic. The primer does not fish eye or seperate like painting over the release agent. The last cowl I pulled did not have any pin holes. It was almost perfect.
I am very happy with the durability of this plane. It weighed 15.5 lbs with 3 nimhi bateries. I had a problem with flutter when I forgot to add a couple of screws to the servo mounts. I have since gone to a more standard servo mounting to eleminate the chance for flutter. I am hoping to get some video of the plane in the next month. That is if I don't dumb thumb it. The plane flies like a 35% plane. My brother has a QQ 102" yak and he says it flies just like it.
John the little e-yak looks great. I think I may need to build one. I am starting work on scaleing up my plane to 100cc. I did some custom foam wings for my brothers 100cc QQ yak. I was able to knock off 2 pounds over the built up wings. His yak weighed 24.5 lbs with my wings. I should be able to make one in the 24-25 lb range.

shoot me an pm. I would like to talk to you about the laser cutting. I have been having parts cut in CA by Bob holeman. He does a fantastic job and I would recomend him highly. I had 4 kits cut the last time and it cost me $50/kit. That is basicly fuse only, but you can't beat that price. I had the repair parts cut by Sotos Patistas at [email protected]. He did a fantastic job. I would highly recomend either Sotos or Bob for laser cutting projects. The parts you cut look great. I would like to talk to you about cutting some kits localy. I am not interested in mass selling my plane. If I can find a foam cutter and a laser cutter to do the work I would like to sell kits at cost plus a few bucks to help suport my rc addiction as my wife calls it.
Congrats John on a sweet plane.
