Building a QHOR, PQHOR, and a SPA3D
Dave, please refresh my memory, you have two landing gear straps, and the item outlined in yellow, the square item is what? Why did you choose that item for the application? I'm sorry to have to ask, you already told me once, but I don't recall.
Thanks again, I really appreciate the help with the QHOR.

Scorch,
The square is simply the backplate from a control horn with a hole drilled in the center and fastened with a #4 sheet metal screw. Since I tend to use pull-pull a lot, I've got lots of spare backplates.......so I just grabbed it.
Unfortunately, somewhere around the 483rd crash, the 1/8" wire gear finally broke as I was straightening it. Oh well.....it survived about 458 more crashes and straightenings than the aluminum gear did.
So I bent a new 1/8" wire gear and attached it the same way. Only this time I used an old servo wheel at the apex of the "V" shape to trap the wire. Those old servo wheels have been sitting in a junk drawer for over 20 years, and I finally found a use for them!
Hope to see you Sunday!
Steve,
From Tattoo's description, it sounds like he's ready to come to Eldon, MO and help us create more divots.
Tattoo,
Ok.....I believe that you flew your SPA3D for 3 hours....
and I believe that you burned over 1/2 gallon of fuel....
and I believe that the SPA3D flys better than the Qhor...
and I believe that the SPA3D harriers better....
and I believe that the SPA3D hovers better....
and I believe that the SPA3D flys worse nose heavy....
and I believe that the SPA3D flys better with an aft CG...
and I believe that the SPA3D flys OK with a bent rail....
and I believe that you flew below yourself in a ravine....
and I believe that you're having a blast with the SPA3D....
but calm winds in Kansas?!?!?!?!?
GIMME A BREAK!!!!

I made the same kinds of straps in the previous picture by cutting strips of large zip ties and drilling 2 holes in them. Maybe I'm a spad purist.

Eldon is about 150 miles from Kansas City, we are just north of Lake Of the Ozarks. We have two very nice flying sites within ten miles of each. Grass runways and a few trees but more than enough room, even for the big boys!

How far is Eldon from the Ks. border?
Unfortunately, there aren't any major highways that allow a direct route.
Mapquest shows the driving distance from Fort Scott, KS to Eldon, MO to be about 145 miles with an estimated 4 hour driving time.
Mapquest shows the driving distance from Kansas City, KS to Eldon, MO to be about 190 miles with an estimated 3 1/2 hour driving time.

Has anyone tried to fold the wing so there is no gap form the spar to the TE?
BTW, if anyone is interested in a different way to mount the servos, here is an alternate way. Sorry for the fuzzy pic.

Tattoo had a fun fly at LORCS yesterday, looked like a spad fest. There was a lot of very nice planes, but you seen more plastic in the air. QHOR was the only thing I took. Dave Mc introduced several good flyers to pizza boxes, X-boxes, and QHORs a very good time was had by all.

Finally, I flew my SPA3D yesterday but my ST .40 engine was having some trouble that couldn´t fix (I think is a tank problem) in the field but was able to fly it 6 times in short periods, what an excellent design, this thing holds in hover very easy, harriers are nice too (no wing rock) and I did 6 dead stick landings without any trouble, in fact this airplane glides much much better than the knife and Super Wasp, I always got a hard time when this two airplanes lost power but with this one it just comes down in a harrier attitude so I just let it dive a little bit an then flares for perfect 3 point landing.
I just bought 2 GMS .47 so next time it will have a good engine to do Flat spins, tail touches and elevators.
My configuration is as follows:
34" wingspan
23" chord
34" 1/2 x 1/2 rail
4" ailerons
Stab and Rudder same size as the 36" version
Engine mount 3" x 5" 3/8" Plywood
ST .40 engine (not enough power at 4000 feet over sea level)
11x4 prop
rudder and elevator servos sideways over the rail

I was not able to take an rpm reading but sure enough it was not powerfull for hover and TR. As Flyboone mentioned, it´s better to go with a .46 like the FX.
Next weekend I will try the ST .40 in a different plane to get some readings.

well, I think I will build me a SPA3D soon. Have the Choroplast and a 46FX looking for a home, so why not build one.
One question though : Out of what material and how do you guys make the control horns ? Do you bend them ? Where to buy material ?
Also, when it says in the plans "crease flutes", what exactly do you mean Tattoo ? Just cut the flute open ?
Also, have you tried to use 2 aileron servos so you can run flaperons, or are flaperons not necessary ?
Thanks

where you make the wing fold just use a phillips head screwdriver and run it along the flute with enough pressure to put a "crease mark"in the flute (make crease marks on inside of wing) do at least three flutes then fold wing over ...creases make the fold uniform and easier to do.
i use 2 aileron servos but i dont use flaperons...show us the pics when your done

Kraut also uses two aileron servos, but he's not using flaperons either.
