RE: Aviation Models/TOC 30% Extra 260 BUILD THREAD
Well the Big Brown Truck brought me a present today! The pictures do this plane no justice. I have already unpacked and test fit everything. It all fits very tight like a glove the quality is great! One thing though since I am not going to run a canister exhaust I thought of putting covering over the tunnel entrance and cutting lightning holes in the tunnel on the inside. Has anyone else thought of this or did this? It could be good for shaving several ounces off of this thing. If I do this I will post pictures of my progress.

Yeah, the plane does look great in person. Most of the guys at work have never seen a RC plane that big before and were pretty amazed at it too.
Lightening sounds like a good idea. I was thinking of putting the fuel tank in the tunnel, like a post I had seen on another website (DOD). cyoung450 I think did it. He has a pretty good build thread there. It opens up the internal fuse up a lot.
I ordered a DL 50 today, so all I need to get is the electrics. I hate saving and waiting.

Well I couldn't stand it I just ordered the graph tech landing gear from TBM. The stock gear is very short and pretty flimsy I think. I am pretty impressed with the hardware pack it is much better than I expected. I will be going with a smaller tank maybe a 16oz that will save a couple ounces. Heck with a 24oz tank you could fly for a half hour .

I just checked no it did not come with one. I have a few extra tail wheel assemblies so no big deal. I wonder if it is just the kits from Chief that are that way or if all of them don't come with a tail wheel. I will start putting this plane together this coming week so I will post my progress as I go.

Well I got a start on my Extra tonight and I got lucky in a way. I will not need to cut the firewall at all for the Brilleli 50 I am using. It uses the beam mounts not standoffs and the stock firewall length is perfect. I suspect that any engine that uses beam mounts will be that way. Have any of you guys used Gorilla Glue for these type hinges? I think I am going with that rather than 30 min epoxy. The epoxy is a pain to get down in those slots at least it is for me.

Good to know that no cut is needed. It is a pain to follow the instruction on this part.
For hinges. I am still doing it the old way: 30 minutes epoxy. The slot openings are pretty big and I did not see a problem for epoxy to get down and deep. I completed all in the tail group.
BTW, for rudder, I am using pull-pull and here is the URL (http://www.swbmfg.com/rudex.html) on how to set up the geometry correctly. I did not like the cross-over setup and went ahead with the parallel. The big alum. control arm has the offset and is a must to get wire-tensioned at any angles.
There is a small door at one side of the fuse at the tail end. Do not know what for. I went ahead put a long piece 1/4" light ply for tailgear mounting through it and shut the door off with two tiny screws.

I am not quite sure what that little door is for. It might be there in case your extensions for the elevator servos fall back into the fuse when disconnecting them when you remove the elevators for transport?

yea the little door is for adding tail weight. The 3d guys like to add 6 or 7 oz's of wight to hover and torque roll better.

That makes sense about the little door in the back. I haven't done much to mine I have been slacking lately[&:]. I plan on getting back on it hot and heavy this coming week. I am thinking about ordering a second one for backup

OK I started on mine this weekend. I completed the engine box, and mounted DL engine. I bench tested (broke in) the DL before I installed it. It ran great. I also cut out the cowl. I rigged the Hitec 645mg throttle servo. I installed the elevator and rudder hinges. I installed the landing gear. I really wish they would have included the tail gear. The canopy and hatch are complete. All I have left is to hinge the ailerons, finish up the electronics. Sorry no pics, I was on a role Friday night and Saturday.
Anyone been flying there's lately? I'm not even finished yet and I'm thinking about how this thing is going to handle. This is my first gasser.

Well I got a few more things done to mine. Not a lot though the weather has been too good I have been spending time at the field working the cobwebs off of my thumbs. I am going to try and finish it this week. I might try to maiden it next weekend if all goes good.

Well I am still moving a little slow on my build but I did come up with something pretty cool. I marked the holes to drill for my tail wheel (Sullivan) removed the little door in the tail and installed blind nuts. It should be quite a bit stronger than just using screws and hardening the holes with CA. This might not be for everyone but I fly on grass and it is not the smoothest field out there so this will allow for a little more strength back there.

Anyone with any news lately? I'm almost there. I have all the extensions, batteries and a couple of props on the way. They should be here tommorow, and possibly a maiden this weekend?

I sadly haven't even been able to fly for the last few weeks . I am nursing a bad disc in my back so the Extra is still sitting there. That almost hurts as much as my back because I have everything to complete it.[]

RE: Aviation Models/TOC 30% Extra 260 BUILD THREAD
Here's my final set up with this plane. Unless something else comes up. I set it on my CG machine, and with my battery placement, and CG at 6 1/2", it balances just a bit nose heavy without fuel. This should be a good place to start. I tried to keep it simple and safe. I haven't weighed it yet, but it's probably heavy like all my planes. The DL seems to pull like a beast, even with the break-in settings and prop. I've heard a lot of good things about this engine, and so far it starts pretty easy. I know I'll be replacing the gear and spinner down the road, but for now they will do.
