Hi there Barry
Well if I hang your picture to throw darts at it wont be as much fun as it should be. I wont be able to deface the picture by drawing a mustache and a beard. lol

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Gibbs,
My doctor had a diet that worked good for me. He said "if it taste good spit it out and eat something yuckee"! That worked well for me, of course 4 months in the hospital didn't hurt either, all of their food tasted like dog food. As a matter of fact both of my dogs probably had better food than me. I didn't eat for over 4 month's and managed to loose 75 pounds, problem was I only needed to loose 50 pounds!!!!!!! I hope my Corsair comes out just as light, maybe I should take it to the hospital!

Bob,
I continued to loose weight after my hospital stay with very little walking, maybe 20 minutes a day. My wife made me eat eggs and cheese (only) for breakfast and a Lean Cuisine (green stripe) for lunch and dinner, with 2 apples a day for snacks. I lost an average of three pounds a week. If I could only do as well on my Corsair! Maybe when it gets a little cooler, for now I'll get my exercise by going to the flying field more often. Whose wheels do you suggest for a Corsair? The plastic ones from Du-Bro just want cut it.

Dave
Its just a matter of $$$$ there some scale ones out there at 125.00 up to about 200.00 but as I am not a total nut I chose 4.5 sullivan skylites metal hubbs, and so far they handle the weight vary nicely.
Hope this helps
If yoy din't mind what was your hospital stay for?? when I had my hart atackI was in and out in 4 days, and the only food they served that was bad was the mashed potato's tasted like paper, I love eggs with a slice of cheese melted on top, but the wife pushes sugger free cereal.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Bob,
I had a stroke back in August 2004 and Dylantin Toxicity. It took them forever to get me recovered enough from from the Dylantin. I tease about their food, the Dylantin ruined my taste buds so even chocolate taste bad (and that's a deadly sin I think). My wife looked at all the Sugar Free stuff for and decided against it because it was all fat. I guess the taste has to come from somewhere! We then looked at the Fat Free stuff but found that it was all full of sugar. One good thing was we both learned to read and pay attention to the ingredient labels. And before I just didn't! My idea of a balanced meal was a Coke, cheese burger, fries and a large candy bar and maybe a Twinkie, those days are long gone.
I just learned to walk this year with a cane and get away from my wheel chair. I think the most fun I have and probably the best therapy for me is my building. I only have one good hand so I go really slow but so far things are looking pretty good. I get to spend a lot of time researching things, like wheels, so I usually find the best for the money. You guys have helped me very, very much and I thank you all. This is a great forum and I read it (and reread it) all of the time.
Have any of you looked at and considered the 100" Corsair from Century Jets? I know it's all composite and fiberglass as well as expensive but it looks pretty neat to me.

Tim,
Those are good looking flaps. Your hinges are well hidden, did you use something like Robart hinge points?
Hey it's hard to beat that NATURE power source. 1:1 Scale was the best choice, I would have chosen the same!

Tim,
Where did you get those covers? The tear drop shaped ones. The whole set up looks great. Very realistic.

I decided to try and hide the hinge line for the tail feathers . I had to move the actuator out from the TE of the horazontal and vertical stabs to achieve this .

Winston,
Looks good! Did you recess the stabilizers to accept the ply? I didn't do mine but you make it look so good and easy that I think I'll go back and redo them.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
David sorry but i am not shure what you mean .If your talking about carving out the TE of the stabs No i didnt i just added the 1/64 ply to cover the hinge and burried the hinges in the LE of the rudder and horazontal fins .I hope this is what you meant
To add the 64th ply just sand the balsa down a little to get it flush with the rest of the surface
Hope this helps

Winston,
That's exactly what I meant. Like I said I'm a neewbie when it comes to 1/64th ply. I've got plenty of sandpaper so I guess I'm qualified.

Hi guys
I can't fined the right words for the workman ship I see in these last posts except itsGREAT, gee I hope that comes out right. and the pic are terrific.
Now I have a question, you all know I got the maiden on my bird but had a glitch with the flap and elevator mix, Well my buddy and I final got togetherand got it figured out, and some how I have 2 futaba 3305 fried flap servos. In the original setup I made sure that the was one click off of a stall in the up position and the same in the down full flaps, subb'ed some 3004 to make sure system was ok and they work fine, So any suggestions to what to look for?????

Thanks for the complements guys
Bob the only thing i can think of is that plywood horn might be catching the hole in the TE when theres a wind load on the flaps .Assuming you did them to TF plans

Bob,
If the system is working on the ground with the 3004's and no apparent binding, you'll need to dig a bit deeper.
How is your power system setup i.e. voltage, servo extension wire size, battery type and impedence, any Y's in the system?
You should setup your servos so there isn't a way you can make them stall on the ground and that may require an adjustment of the servo travel limits and/or geometry of the linkages.
A stalled servo, or one that is creating more load on the electical system than it can handle will cause the voltage to drop and the servos will draw more amperage to compensate for the lower voltage. High amp draws cook things real quick.
Even though the 3305's are surface servos, I run them on my Funtana 90 and have not had any complaints with them for that model but they can put out quite a bit of torque so an adequate electrical supply is necessary to keep them happy. Those put out 99 oz. of torque at 4.8 volts and about 133 oz. at 6 volts IIRC and the general rule of thumb is that you'll pull 1 amp of current for each 100 oz. of servo torgue at the recommended voltages. If the voltage drops, that amp draw can be significantly higher.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
well now....zeeb's post brings up many questions. What are guys using for batteries and associated electronics. I have not got that far but my preliminary plan is redundant lithium ion batteries and 3D type electronics (sure to get trimed down for cost efficiency when I get to that stage). I am sure these planes fly for years on a 4.7v system.
so what are guys using in this plane?

Zeeb/Devens
The bat's is a 5 cell 2400 mh ni/cad, all wireing is hevy duty mpi 20ga just befor the failure happened I had turned the bird over and had the wing loose to check the gear servo, when we noticed one side of the flaps were not responding, turned off the power lifted wing and found no hot or warm wiring, then pulled flap hatch and tuched servo it was warm to the tuch double checked all wireing for a visibal short/bad conection, with my finger on the servo turned power on and with in 10 seconds tops servo was hot pulled unit out and the outher side it was warm, put in the 3004's and system seems to work fine had it on this am for about 30 min, with no heating of any kind.
Is it possible that over the year befor I was able to get the maiden that some how the stall point changed at the up position?? also I am using switch "C" to operate the flaps.
Thanks for your help
Cheers Bob T
