Yeah... no frills, basic Flat Black... kinda like my ARMY flight boots. Never failed a shiney boot inspection. I'd just go pre-flight my 'hook right before inspection and all the puddles of oil and hydrualic fluid would have my boots looking like a Sailor's model airplane. I did get lots of gigs for my soiled Flight Suit... and even more soiled skivvies...[8D]. Long ago and far away.

Well a good long 3 day weekend I was hoping to have my bird covered but the hobby shop has let me down. 3 weeks and still no order. I'm going to order it myself.
I think I'll order some paint too while I'm ordering. Any recommendations?? I'm used to using automotive paint with a clear coat. This is only a warm up build to see how much I remember and to get some stick time. So i don't feel the need for all that. I'm looking for quick easy and light. Any thoughts??

If you can stand the freight, then Sikkens is the only game in town, but if you prefer single stage, then DelStar enamel is pretty good as well. It becomes a matter of personal preference at that point.

The DelStar enamel wouldn't be fuel proof without clear coating I assume? It's basically the same as using the automotive paints that I'm used to using. Right????
On the next bird I'll set out to doing a nice finish. This one is only to get off the ground with. I was looking at the Klass Kote Epoxy paint. Any thoughts there?

No enamel is actually fuel proof, but I get by as long as I don't run any hotter fuel than 15% nitro, and as long as I clean the plane as soon as I'm through flying. Klass Kote appears to be highly fuel resistant, and looks good. It seems to atomize well too, so expect a great looking finish. If you run glow fuel, just remember that the basis for this fuel is alcohol. Cleaning the model when finished flying should still be required. As I said, I have no problems using lacquers and enamels, but I do let the finish completely cure before introducing it to fuel.

. Actually, I wish my finished paint jobs would come out that shiney. Lookin' great Jim! I got a new Craftsman air compressor for my birthday last month and a mini detail gun. Been too dang hot here to play with it. When it gets under a hundred f-teen degrees in my shop, then I can practice... 'til then - back to the cement pond[8D].

Oddly enough I don't it, was almost an after thought, but I copied the idea from RC Outlaw and the Sig Astro Hog, I didn't extemd mine real far back. I just wanted to fair the wing into the fuselage so it wouldn't look like some of the ARF's I have.
Here are some more shots, I have it together (temprary) working on getting it balanced. Gonna take some weight in the nose!

The last one that I did used a lens attached to a brass tube housing for the wing tip nav lights. The light atop the rudder is a T-pin dipped repeatedly in epoxy, and polished out. It has the teardrop shape.

I have wires run through the wing with the connection through the top wing mounts where they are bolted on. I have Led's and ressistors to run the flashing for the lights but boy is it something to get housings small enough to put the LED's in . Well hell I am this far so what the

Guys.
Radio Shack carries LED's in green, red and white. If you connect a blinking led to the others in series, they will all blink unfortunately at the same rate.
But you can put all blinking led's in parallel and avoid the resistors etc.
I am using the wires from a telephone extension.

The YMF that the Pica kit is based on, NC 14031, has lights similar to the UBF-2s mounted half way between the straight leading edge and the apex of the wing tip. Other YMF/UMF had leading edge lights as shown in the UPF-7/YKS pictures. And some had no lights at all. If you are making a specific A/C, your lights need to be positioned like your subject plane. Sorry, I don’t have any measurements or pictures with a scale in them.
