Here are some more pics. This is another pic of the tail wheel opening with tail hook craddle. I do plan on a operating tail hook although my design is only about 20% complete. I am also showing the wing saddle filler. It came out great! Thanks ctflyboy! It is made of a little autobody iceing mixed with hobbylite balsa filler. The wing and fuse joint is nearly perfact.

Here are the wing tips. I tappered the wing more by modifying the last rib and by adding 1" to each wing tip block. Now her wing span is 88.5" instead of 86.5". I added the balsa material to the inside of the wing tip block. Two layers of 1/2" balsa stock. You will also start to see the outer panel modification to accomodate the fabric covering.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I sheeted the outer wing tip with 1/16" instead of 3/32" and then added 1/32" strips for the simulated rib caps. I am copying a 1/32 scale model I have built so that is where the rib pattern came from. Again this is a sport scale "make it look cool" model not true to sale even though I am using true to scale replica as a reference.

In the post above you can see the material added to the flaps to account for the angle and the fact the flap end caps are all the same size. I modified the flap end angles between the middle flap to be more scale. The flap pattern for the middle flap is completely wrong as many have noted. I still need to finish fill and sand the intire wing. Last we have the bottom. I wish I had put the servo covers on. I am also showing the slots for the sliding conopy on the fuse and the outline of the access door. The tail wheel doors and access cover are already cast in glass and carbon fiber.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Well... after one year and 2 weeks I finally flow my corsair!!! I would like to thank Bob t, I took a lot of his tips, and the pics was very helpful
here my setup for those which that interests :
motor : Evolution 58GX2 24x8 wood prop
Radio : JR 9303 2.4
servo : 2 jr 4721 for elevators
1 jr 8611 for rudder
2 jr sport st126 for flaps
and the rest are jr ds821
I was really surprise how fast the plane lift off, when I was taxying, I had full up elevators, the plane start almost immediately to lift off
The flight was pretty good, I need somme ajustement on the flaps and the motor is very powerfull
Sorry no pics, may be next week if the weather will be good!!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks for the compliments. I managed to keep making progress even though I slowed down this summer. I started Jan, 1 2007. The detailing is what is left. I would say at am at just over 50%. I am building slow because I haven't built since my early twenties and I really hate going backward and tearing things apart. Tim, I really had to shim the wing saddle before the resin cast to square the wing in the roll axis. The plane did come out very nicely in tearms of being square and the right incidences. After the flaps I am going to cast the main gear doors. Then I am going to work on the armament. Eight air to air missles, two 500 kg bombs and a center fuel tank. The bombs will be operable. I also have a lot of work to do around the scale exhaust. I am buying the exhaust to save some building time. I will still have to fit them in the fuse. The gear door mechanisms and tail hook will also need to be done.
Thanks again for the compliments!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I have one of these kits, but sadly did not get the wing plan. has someone a copy that that are finished with, that they would let me have, or let me borrow ? ( TF would only sell a full set, but all I want is the sheet that was missing )
Happily pay postage and return it after use if required.
Thanks - please email me if you can assist .

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
TF GS Corsair arrived in the post today!
First impressions are that this is a very well manufactured kit, the parts I have popped out already seem to just slot together really nicely! - I hope its representative of the rest of the kit!
...the only negative I would pick up on at this stage is the cowling! - What a pile of poo! - 4 separate bits of ABS vac forming! Ive got the TF GS P51 and that comes with a really nice one piece fibreglass cowl, and the Royal Corsair that I built years ago had a lovely spun metal cowling! - I dont think Ill bother with the TF Corsair cowling!
One question (first of many!) - is what glues are best for the various parts? - in the past (quite a while since Ive actually 'built' a plane) I relied quite heavily on thick cyno for the 'point' joins and epoxy for the 'sheet' joins and white wood glue edge joins.
...I notice alot of people refering to 'gorilla' glue - what is this? Ive never heard of it?
What glue would you use for the following...
1) Point joins - ie spars to formers etc?
2) Sheet joins - ie joining the fuz doublers and main spars?
3) Edge joins - ie gluing the edge of a rib to the sheeting?
Many thanks
David Bevan

David, being located in the UK, you should have access to Superphatic adhesive--It would be my choice of glues for all you mention above.

dabevan,
Can you order and get a cowling from Fiberglass Specialties here in the States or is it way to expensive? I got the detailed one with the cooling flaps in the mold.
