Todd,

The reverse color was intentional. We can't have several looking just alike, now can we? If we did that, we would be just like the Army (everything painted alike).

Hi All,
Here are some cockpit pictures of Waco YMF-5C Super I got from the full scale owner in Japan, I am building the same as shown on the first picture from Peter Barth's 1/4 scale kit.
I am working on the drawing using Corel Draw, but still missing some instruments located at both upper corners, so I think I have to figure those instruments out myself...

RCWalker,

Your Center Panel looks great. I posted some pictures of the Instrument Panels of NC 14081 a couple of days ago, but the layout is a bit different from yours, but you may be able to figure what instruments are missing from your lay out. Noll-Modelltechnik http://www.noll-modelltechnik.de/coc...unstflug_2.htm in Europe has a photo of their IP for the Waco (1/3rd Barth I believe). I also posted a photo similar to yours a couple of posts later. Anything I can post to help, let me know.

Hi John,

I will check the website you mentioned. Thanks John, you have been very helpful after I went through your thread from page 1.

I will send a mail to the full scale owner in Japan to see if he is able to send me more pictures for those missing instruments.

Thanks John!

Wallace,

It is not my thread, it belongs to the Brotherhood. Bill (stickbuilder) started it what seems to be a long time ago and has been the guiding force ever since. Others have contributed with suggestions, fixes, how-to's, other ways to power, cover paint and more. Send Bill a note and you can be a member, you qualify with your PB Waco. It does not matter what model Waco you have or wish you had, you just have to like Wacos.

Take care and post some more photos of your Waco.

Wallace,

Welcome to the WACO Brotherhood. You are Brother #65 (we are filling in open slots that were caused by other Brothers requesting specific numbers. This is not (REPEAT NOT) my thread, but belongs to all members of the Brotherhood, equally. I just try to keep it moving in some direction. This thread meanders all over the place, and often gets completely off track. Oh, Well.....That is what the Brotherhood is all about. We have had some Brothers get bent out of shape, because we did not become a purely technical thread. That's not what we are about. I dare say that there is not a thread that is dedicated to one airplane brand that has the level of expertise that this one enjoys. We are about all WACO models (yes the entire alphabet soup of them), and welcome all who love these old rag-bags, regardless of manufacturer, size or power options. Best wishes, and again, welcome.

Hi Stickbuilder,
I've got my two coates of dope on finally! Getting ready to cover the wing probably tomorrow. I just stick the edges then shrink the koverall at 250 degrees? The shrinking is done before any doping of the Koverall right? In other words it won't be stuck to the wing ribs or anywhere else until it's been shrunk?

I also have a question about doing curves etc. I'll post a picture below of my rudder. If you could give me a suggestion on how to attack this it would answer all the future questions. Also do I shrink solid surfaces? Like the rudder etc? The fuselage has no open framework. It's an Ugly Stick that is solid. It' gets shrunk as well?

Thanks! Hopefully some pictures to follow by the end of the week!

Once you have the Koverall adhered around the perimeter, then use your covering iron (you will need to figure out at what setting the material begins to shrink) and shrink the entire covering material (open and sheeted areas) then begin to apply the Nitrate dope. I usually thin the Nitrate 50/50 and proceed to fill the weave with the dope. The dope will permeate the Koverall, and will adhere it to the framework (ribs and sheeting). It's pretty easy. As to the curved areas, trim the covering a little larger than the framework, and give the framework about 3 coats of pure Nitrate (unthinned) then you can adhere the Koverall to the edges with thinner. You just use a small brush, and brush the thinner onto the material over the doped framework. Work the thinner in with your fingertip (you will need to clean your fingertip with thinner occasionally) the Koverall will be adhered to the framework, and you can begin to shrink the Koverall. Use a new single edge razor blade to trim the excess material. The single edge blade will give you a better cut than will a #11 X-acto blade, and will stay sharp much longer. Use some dope and seal the raw edge down, and you are good to go.

Thanks Bill,
So the rudder that I have pictured above you would cover with two pieces? And it does get shrunk like the wing. Before sticking it down in the centers? I don't have a covering iron. I'll be using the wifes small clothing iron. I read someplace one of your posts that the setting was about 250 degrees. I have that post bookmarked someplace and I'll re-read it. How well do the seams hide once the weave has been filled? Nothing else is required but the 50/50 dope coates?

The rudder will cover with 2 pieces. Actually you could do it with one piede, wrapping it at the hinge line, but you would probably find it easier to do in 2 pieces. You can finish the seam with pure Nitrate (unthinned) and the seam will disappear. You just have to rub the dope into the seam with your finger. You will not want to add any dope to the center until you have shrunk the fabric. The Nitrate is not fuel proof, so you should finish the job with Butyrate dope, which comes in colors, or if you are using electric or Gasoline power, any paint that suits your fancy. Most paint is not fuel proof.

I bought my new engine today (after much agonizing and soul searching). I went with the Zenoah G-26. I really would have loved to be able to use my Fuji-Imvac BT-32, but that engine would have required setting the bottom of the firewall back about 1.25", and would have destroyed the appearance of the entire front of the model. I am disappointed that I will have to cut a hole for the spark plug and lead in the cowl, but I want to go gasser on this one. I almost went for the Evolution 35GT, and even looked at their 26GT as well, but I don't want to use a converted glow engine. They tell me that the power is great, but it just looks wrong to me. I may have committed the dumb mistake of the century there. I guess that time will tell.

Ken, what prop are you using on your 26 on the WACO? I want to use an 18X6. Is that one out of the question?

Bill ,for what it is worth.I use a 16/8 On my bipes and if I want all out speed like on my pt 19 I use a16/7. On the latter I get 9200 RPM on the 16/8 I get 8500. some guys use an 18 prop but I just don't think you use all of your eng. power . this is just my opinion. That 26 is really a good choice for the Waco.

Jacque,

I'm not looking for all out speed. I think that the 6 pitch will give me the acceleration that I am after. If not, I do have some 18X5 props. That may be a little too slow.

Hi Bill - I have used an 18x8 and an 18x6-10 Zinger prop on my 1/4 scale Sig J3, powered by a older G23. I have put a G26 in an ARF of the Super Stearman with an 18x8 Zinger, and it flew extremely well. As you say we don't want to do 3D or anything with these planes, just a nice realistic scale flight with a little extra power to pull us out of "dumb thumb" situations! My cub could do loops all day and had no trouble with mild aerobatics that were sometimes just a little beyond the true scale. The Stearman has good vertical, though not unlimited, and will do all the manouvers in the basic and sport IMAC. The only thing I found with the Zenoah, both the G23/26 and the G62, was that they like to be very "wet" to start. Other than that I think they are a great motor for the price range and I'm putting the G23 in my Waco with an 18x6 or 8 or 6-10! We'll play a little with the different props. Also the 18" is scale size - which I like! Also I use 35 to 1 fuel ratio with a good ashless oil - nothing super special - and the motor has run without problems for years.

I have had the same experiences with my G-62's, and G-80's, and I really had to do some scratching to find a gasser that would fit. The G-20 EI looked good, but the power isn't there. Also it is a hungry puppy (battery wise). You wouldn't think that 6 cc would make that much difference in power, but the consensus was that the 20 would not fly the YMF. It's a shame, because it would all fit inside the cowl. I actually wanted to use the Fuji-Imvac BT32m, but I would have needed to redesign the entire lower front of the fuselage. That engine still has the rear projecting stub shaft, the rear mounted muffler, and the strangest set of sheet metal mounts known to man. It has great power though, and the weight is on par with the G-26. Sadly, the BT 24 is also a little wimpy too. I looked at the Evolution 35 GT, but passed on it since it appears to be nothing more than a conversion glow engine. It would seem that someone would engineer a purpose built casting for R/C airplanes in this size range. I think that it has been proven that the market is there. I have tried the Evolution oil with what seems to be good results. There is very little carbon buildup in the exhaust area, and the engines are still improving in performance (one G-62 has about 4 gallons run through it, and the max RPM is still climbing).
