OK Guys,

I found a 1932 UBF-2 (NC 2091K) that has a cockpit similar to the detail drawing as supplied by Pica on the scale detail sheets. The first 3 pictures are the detail sheets whole. I will be breaking the sheets down and posting with matching photos and allow those who want to create a 1930s style cockpit as opposed to the newer cockpit of the YMF Classics and Supers. The Waco guys at CCA state that many of the cockpits of similar series Wacos were all similar, although wood was often substituted for metal on the IPs. P4 a, b, c, d, e & f are of the instrument panel. The Center Oval panel measures 9” tall x 16-3/4” wide on the full size, made from brass sheet with aluminum trim. The main panel is aluminum with Brown Crinkle Coat paint. The last picture is the front panel, just storage (glove-map) compartments. You have a case of CRSA (Can't Read Stuff Anymore), many of us also have CRS (Can't Remember Stuff) that progresses day by day. Some days are better than others and I missed that little decimal point reading your post. Bill (stickbuilder) put his Waco on a diet as well, he will have to tell you what the results were, I can't find the posts right now (CRS kicking in).

Mr McCullough's model is correct in every detail I can see from all the pictures I seen.
You probably know, this type of aircraft was one of a kind and it crashed shortly after delivery to Cuba.

You are correct that the Cuban S3HD-A was a one of a kind. There is another S3HD base in Vermont that is still flying, the Black fuselage, Yellow wings Waco based in Vermont, NC 14048. It was supposed to come to the AWC Fly In back in June, but time constraints made it impossible for this year.

The Cockpit Floor areas: Rudder pedals; P1 Rudder drawing, P2/3 Rear Left and right rear pedals. There is a lot to see in the pictures. All the pedals of this style that I have seen have been chromed. The pedals pivot at the floor and have a triangular lever on the side to pull the cables, brake pedals and cylinders are inboard of the rudder pedal, Aileron and Elevator control rods (chrome tubes), scuff plates below the pedals. At the left side of P2 You can also see that the former is “laced” to the steel tube frame work with a flat woven “tape/string” and the pinking tape over the side stringer. Under the rudder pedals to the outside, you can see where the lower wing attachment struts enter the fuse and attach to the frame. The front seat belt attach point can also be seen at the top left center on the black seat support.

Your collective help is needed. A few pages ago, I mentioned that scale functioning landing gear was under development. Dany from Team Genisis has asked Darrell Tenny at Sierra Giant to work on the gear and Darrell has indicated that he needs input from Waco YMF/UBF fans to see if there is enough interest to make the gear. Sierra is tops in making gear, much better than others. Once the drawings are complete, they can be scaled to whatever size is needed and the CNC machine can make the gear. I have a 16 oz tank on mine. I haven't flown more than ten minutes in any single flight on my UMF, and I have well over half a tank remaining when I pump it out. My guess is 15 to 20 minutes on 16 oz and still have a decent reserve. The -26 is a stingy little engine with gas.


Skylark--that Bf 108 Taifun, is that the same type that James Garner and his buddy stole in "The Great Escape"? Sure looks like it.

I believe it is. Garner escaped with the forger who went blind. The one they got in the movie was plain grey, not half a pretty (and shinney Nightstalker) as this one is. Would like to see it outside and ready to go.

I looked at the pic again of the Taifun; it really does look like the Escape plane, but seems to me, best I can remember, the main gear on the movie plane was either fixed, or a different retract. I don't remember the "109" style gear like this Taifun has. Maybe just variants of the same basic type.

From the research I have been able to briefly do, the Bf-108 Taifun was designed with retractable main gear from the beginning in 1934. The 108 continued to built after the war by Nord (France) as the Nord 1000. I can only speculate that Garner in his role as an escapee did not know how to retract the gear. But I seem to remember that just before they crash landed, the gear was up.

I know, I bid it up for a while, and then asked myself, why. We can build those we have stashed, or now we can make our own kits. I would like to think that by enabling anyone to do their own, it has lowered the outrageous prices that they were bringing. Allowing for inflation, the $255.01 is not that far out of reason, considering that they were $180.00 when released. The last one on e-bay went for what, $355.00, or so? Of course, that one was pristine, while this one had been fooled with. Perhaps incomplete. I'm sure that the lady who was selling this one did not know whether it was complete or not.

Why would we want them to? They have given the plans to the AMA, and we have given the AMA the parts templates (full size). Order a set, and cut your own kit. It's much more fun that way. You can get all the hardware from other outlets, so there is nothing to hold you back, now is there? C'mon, give it a try.

I forgot a picture of the Magneto Switch and am adding a couple more for comparison.

P2/2a Instrument Panel from UFB-2 NC 155Y, completely different layout (plane was used for fuel testing) with some extra instruments/controls and paneled interior. Note filler pad in the rudder pedals.
P3 Instrument Panel from UBA NC 13041(s/n 3595). Different model type with similar Instrument Panel
P4 Forward exterior port side of cockpit area of UBA NC 13041. Note the “S” style control stick (similar to the plans sheet in post 3646). The UBA is a single, side by side, dual control, cockpit, was supposed to be “the Golfers Plane” with the forward storage for the golf clubs. “Don’t drive, fly to the golf course and play golf”.
