Been reading the posts here, and maybe my suggestion will work for you. To replicate the metal parts on the Waco you may try using some aluminum flashing you can purchase in just about any hardware store, it is thin and it is strong. Also a hint as to the corrugated covering on the ailerons instead of pounding out litoplates, which by the way may also be used for metal parts Sig sell corrugated plastic for their Morrissey Bravo stock numbers SIGRPCP .010X8X17 $2.50 per sheet. SIGPPCP .010x6 1/2x13 1/2 $1.99 per sheet!

Hope this helps someone.
John, do you know what the spacing is on the SIG corrugated sheets? I am building the Pepino 1/4 scale YMF-5.

Thanks

Ken, Jim,

This John (skylarkmk1) does not know the spacing of the SIG corrugated sheets

Here are a couple of close ups of the ends of the aileron, rivets and rib spacing. A full scale aileron is 67-1/4†long. This aileron is from a YKS and is the same as those used on the **F series Wacos.

P1 Tip end – note the first rib is about 1-3/4†from the tip and the rivets have been inserted from different sides depending on what stage of assembly. (bottom side of aileron shown)
P2 Root end – note the first rib is about 1-1/2†from the end and that the ribs are just under 2†apart. (bottom side of aileron shown) Aileron horn ball link in lower right corner can be seen.
P3 Rib spacing – Using the 1/64†scale, you can see the ribs are just about 1-15/16†apart.
P4 Tip end top view
P5 Center section view, not quite as close, rivets are even spaced and not as noticeable as they are closer up. Silver area is where the aileron connecting strut attached on the YKS.

On a ¼ scale model, the rib spacing would need to be just under ½†(.4844†),
On a 1/5th scale model, the rib spacing would need to be just over 3/8†(.3875†)

Jim – go with the even spaced rivets and don’t rush it

John - Thanks for the great pix of the ailerons. I wonder if there is a photo available of the whole aileron clear enough to blow up, so I can see how the rivets run up the middle support struts. I believe they form sort of a double"V". My sample pix I posted was just a test strip. Since this is a labour of love - I will take my time.

John, very good photos.

Surely someone out there knows what the spacing of the SIG corrugated sheet is.
I do, I used it on my UMF ailerons, works very well, although the spacing is not exact scale for 1/5, it is close.

The prices are about a year old, but:

SIGRPCP404A--sheets are 5-1/8" x 12", thickness is 0.010", rib spacing is 15/32". These sheets aren't long enough to get a complete aileron on the 1/5 scale without piecing it, but the rib spacing is closest of the three to 1/5 to scale, and is almost dead nuts exact for 1/4 scale. These are $1.99/sheet. If carefully cut, you could piece them, but you'd need two sheets each for top and bottom of each aileron in 1/4 scale, as they aren't wide enough to do both surfaces out of one sheet, or long enough either.

SIGRPCP2571--sheets are 8" x 17", thickness is 0.010", rib spacing is 21/32", the price is $2.59/sheet. This is the size I used for my ailerons. I think the scale # of ribs is 33 or 34 per aileron, this sheet will give you 21 ribs/aileron on the 1/5 scale, and the sheet is wide enough and long enough to do top and bottom of one aileron per sheet in 1/5 scale, don't think so in 1/4, though.

SIGRPCP2572--sheets are 6-1/2" x 13-1/2", thickness is 0.010", rib spacing is 23/32", price is $1.99/sheet. Very close to the one above.

The "other" Ken

khodges, we were posting at the same time and I didn't see your information until I had posted, therefore, that is the reason that I edited this post. That is exactly the info that I needed.

Bill, I've decided that I don't need to see the secret hand shake. Thanks anyway. []

Jim,

Three shots of ailerons, the Turquoise Blue from the YKS (bottom side), Light Blue from UPF-7, NC 173E (top) and the grey from UBF-2, NC 12002 (top). The rivet pattern is mostly on the inboard area of the aileron and in the 16th space from the tip rib (grey aileron). Khodges is correct, 34 ribs (or corrugations) and 35 spaces per aileron. Also note the different locations of the mounting plate for the aileron connection struts.

I just finished ordering 4 sheets of: SIGRPCP2571--sheets are 8" x 17", thickness is 0.010", rib spacing is 21/32", the price is $2.59/sheet plus $8.99 for shipping.

I can cover both sides of the aileron with one sheet. This will give at least 25 ribs per aileron on 1/4 scale. Not scale I know but khodges looks good.

The very idear, I'll have you to know that I washed that hand (actually both of them) last week. Of course, you Officers were taught to wash your hands after you go to the bathroom, while Master Chiefs know not to use the bathroom on your hands.

You guys need to try utilizing the "CRT" (Crew Relief Tube) in the back of a pitching MH-47 Chinook... at night even. Man I used to go through a lot of Nomex flight gloves...

Oh and Lt. - This may be a dumb question (I know... you'd expect such from an ARMY Doggie), but what would be so difficult about making the aelerons out of sheet balsa and square stock to resemble the plastic ones. You said they are not quite 1/5th scale, so why not make wood ones that are 1/5th scale? Sounds like something even I could do Unless it's a weight thing.

Out Here,

Todd

Todd,

I did a set using 1/16" square stock (sanded to shape) and it looked good. It did, however, seem to take forever to make them.

They were fairly light, but there are materials out there that lend themselves to the process in a much easier manner.

If you guys would fly your Hooks at a more reasonable altitude, you wouldn't have had that problem.

Well, your soybean field was looking a little dry, so we were just helping you out with a little aerial irrigation. What's so unreasonable about 10 feet AGL at 150 knots? Unless you REALLY gotta go #2 [8D]

I have been given a 1/5 pica kit to dispose of. I was debating about duplicating the drawings before I do that. If you would pay the cost of extra copies I would order more then one

Trying to spot if the YMF Classic has a strobe on the belly that I can't see in this shot. Too lazy to drive to the airport and with todays weather, he probably wouldn't be home anyway! It looks like landing lights and wing tip lights only! Is this correct?

Charlie,

You can order the plans from the AMA plans service, or let TR run a set for you.. If you opt for the copied sed, check the measurments for square, since some copy machines can and will skew the drawings.

Super Cub Man,

It depends on the plane. You can specify lighting for the application with the Classic. I would think that all newer planes would have the strobe package. Check with Mike Barbee, since his third scale Genesis is about the best detailed one that I have seen. Doesn't mean that there is not one nicer, but I haven't seen it. Mike is a Brother, so he should be happy to give you the info.

I've been out 19 years 1 month and 23 days. I would have used the term, "Head", but would have needed to retrain the rest of you. Just wait until I start talking about Charlie Noble, and the Scuttlebutt, and the Geedunk.
