Bill, I can see something that looks like tubing that is the leading edge of the elevator, but the trailing edge of the horizontal stab looks just like wood to me. Am I looking at the wrong thing?

Nice job on that. What kind of hinges are you using? It looks like Robart hinges on the vertical stab and flat type on the elevators, but I could be wrong.

Jim
Dang, I did say horizontal stab didn't I? I meant to type elevator.[:@] You have a keen set of Mk-1 Eyeballs there. The Rudder is using the Robart hinges, while the Elevator is using the pin type flat hinge for operation, but will have a set of dummy hinges for looks.

nice job Stickbuilder,,,,Here are some pics of my fuse build, also my tailwheel which I copied from Jay and Supercubman
If you look really close, you can see the same basic look for mine, but mine pivots back and forth, with a spring shock, and swivels with an internal shaft that is servo driven. It's a little overkill, but on this one, who will know? Everything on this one is overkill[8D].

Rick............here's some pics. of Interplane and Cabane struts made from K&S Aluminum airfoiled tubing. 3/8ths for Cabanes and aileron pushrods and 1/2" for Interplanes struts. I have no pictures of the method that I used to attach the airfoiled struts. But what I did is follow the diagram on the plans and cut one angle at a time. Where one angle meet the other was a attached by making a V shape from aircraft ply to fit inside of the airfoiled tubing. I used 30 mins epoxy, keeping it flat on the plans while drying. You do one angle at a time to make sure that it follows the plans. I have used the same idea with the Cabane struts, instead of using aircraft ply I used piano wire to lock both angles together, using again epoxy inside the airfoiled alum. tubing. Again it should be sitting flat on the plans so the epoxy stays closer to the joint. You can can sand off the joint clean after the epoxy has cured. Not to ruin the plans I use waxed paper over the plans. You will notice from the picture of the Cabane struts the piano wire. Always make a dry fit before epoxying. I have two Roberts Incidence Meters and use them both at the time when the Wing incidence is set. I've used L brackets to attached the Struts to the wings, you can see these in the pictures. Once the incidences are set I lock them in, by drilling another hole in the L angles and screw them in the hard block. From the picture you will notice a head bolt and a stainless color screw.
I went with this method as I've seen it done. But there are always changes and improvements as you go along.
The 3/8" K and S airfoiled tubing for the pushrods are done last. The tubing is just cosmetic to match the struts. The 2/56 pushrod is inserted inside the 3/8" alum. airfoiled tubing and again epoxied, making sure that the widest airfoil is facing front and the narrow airfoil to the trailing edge. I used Du-Bro ball links, I find these to be better, less slop.

If anyone have more questions about this method please feel free to ask. I might have missed something.
Building the WACO requires patience, step at a time.

Ya know, I don't know what the actual scale hinges look like. Just one more thing to keep reading this thread to learn more.

I think I'm getting the 1/6 Cox-Pica ARF to start out with, I have the Saito 100 and that will give me something to bash during the frozen weather here. I think there is much to learn about the scale aspects of a YMF. I've at least got to change that color from Dark blue to a white with Red or white with a brighter blue.

Setting here staring at the tube and wishing we could get the parts from the good old days. Every thing is getting high tec except building supplies like I used to get from International RC Specialties like scale hinges and pull ,pull cable assemblies. The offset hinges I have on my F would look great on your new build.
And I think Jim H has one of the instrument panels

Jim, Larry,

You can see pictures of the full scale hinges back on page 197, post 4921.

If IRC Specialties has a link, please post it.

I'm going to use the instrument kit from Hobby-Lobby International. They come from eastern Europe (Czechoslovakia maybe?) And they are letter perfect. You can specify what type you need, and the kit is complete. I posted a photo of my I.P. a while back, and it's gunstock with an Oak insert (the oval one). I think it's going to be killer.

You could see a video clip if I knew how to do it. My camera does take video's, but You are lucky that I know how to just take a picture with it at my age.[:@]

In case I don't make over to everybody's houses here, I just want to make sure I wish you all a very, very merry Christmas eve and Christmas day. I hope Santa was wearing brown for you this year (Undercover Priority Santa, UPS) and that you get everything you wished for.
I have the best lady in the world, a warm home, Christmas music is playing and I have my sweet old dog by my feet, and I have a place to play with my planes. It's more than I deserve, more than I could ask for, and I wish the very same for all of you this Christmas night. I will hang an ornament for you all (a little Tiger Moth).

Peace...Hope....Love

We went out this evening and drove through all the olde pharte's retirement villages and looked at all the lights, and went out to the famous Cottam Farm. They start decorating on Labor Day, and get it all up and running about the 15th of December. Luk Luk liked it, at least when we parked and got out, he started pulling me like he was lead dog on the Idittirod run. You don't take a Husky for a walk, they take you for a drag. He seemed to enjoy it a lot though. I get to spend part of tomorrow getting all the hair out of the old Volvo. It looked like a hair storm in there. I just came in from the screen porch, and it was nice out. (ahem, it's only 72 degrees out there right now) We have some white stuff on the ground too. It's called SAND!!!

I can't wait to see what Old Santy brought me.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night. [8D]

I give up. It's 34 degrees out and getting colder as I read uncle stickbuilders play by play.

How close is the Great Planes Giant aeromaster to the Waco? Building and flying, Anybody know?

A good friend of mine built the Giant Aeromaster a few years ago. Sadly Bill passed away about 3 years ago, but his memory remains. The Aeromaster was, if anything a little easier to fly than is the Waco, and was a bunch more forgiving on landing as well. His flew on the G-62, and was an outstanding model.

Thanks Bill. The reason I'm asking is that I would rather get my feet wet with the Aeromaster first before flying the Waco.

Bill,

The instruments that Hobby Lobby carries are from ProPagTeam http://www.propagteam.cz/ in the Czech Republic (you were correct) and seem to be the best out there. The problem is that Hobby Lobby does not list the “American Aircraft of the 1930s” instrument set (p/n 5108/1) that the ProPagTeam shows. These seem to be the most accurate for the 1930s Wacos. The GA/Sport instruments are not correct for the 1930s.

JTec http://www.jtecrc.com/ runs a close second and their sets come in either B&W or Color.

I sent an e-mail to Hobby Lobby asking about the 1930s set availability and am waiting to hear back (probably after the New Year).

The newer YMF Classic with the 3 piece panel, you guys are on your own, although on the Barth thread (page 17, post 410), Bernie has done a very nice job with the Instrument Panel and cockpit.

Merry Christmas

That's looking very nice, snowball. What have you done inside the brass tubing to strengthen the tailwheel forks? I made the very same thing (I actually thought this design up, Jay made one much nicer from chromemoly steel) and used piano wire inside the forks for extra strength, but after about four landings, plus the bumps from taxiing on a grass field, the solder joints cracked. The squared tailwheel fork is used only on the YMF Classic and Super; all original Wacos have a curved, stirrup shaped tailwheel fork. After my original brass one failed, I drew out a plan/template for the curved one and gave it to Jay (damifino) who welded me up one from 3/16 (or thereabouts) chromemoly tubing. The spring assembly still works, as the new style still has a piano wire post that secures inside the steel tubing with a set screw.

The last pic here is what the full-scale setup looks like, and what stickbuilder was talking about how his works.

I just visited the propang website and it shows the instruments to be a one to one scale ( 1/1 ) Am I reading this right?

Well,

Santa was very nice to me. How long has it been since any of you have seen an Ace Whitman kit? My little Wife got me a great gift. It is New, and in the box, never built, and is from 1938. I just had to share it with you guys, even if it is not a YMF, it's still a WACO.
