Default RE: Speed Freaks Wanted- Over 150 Members already !

don't know if this is the right place for this question but here it is.

I was given a Webra Speed 40 new in the box. I don't know anything about this motor or what is a good plane to put this in, but I do love speed and lots of it.

I have a Juno F-20 kit I never started and was looking to buy a GP Viper 500. What would be the better suit for this plane out of the 2 our should I be looking in another direction as for planes. I like to go 100 +++
Thanks for the help.

I have those planes, and would recommend the Viper for the best speed, hands down.

The F-20's are cool, but too fat in the fuse for any real speed.

....yep, if he can get a good muffler on it, it should crank fairly well.

....you need to wind it up, with say a 9-7 prop and see what it will do before looking
for another muffler. Most 40-46 sport engines can show qutie an increase of power by
changing the mufler....but that doesn't mean every engine will. Generally, a muffler
with an increase in volume can result in an increase in rpm.

Put a Jettstream or (Nelson ) Ultra Thrust on it...that'll wake it up!

....that's what I was getting at....but it looks like those engines have an odd sized
exhaust outlet. I"m not sure, but I think those engines don't come stock with a
mulffler although there are Webra mufflers available for them as an accessory.

It might be a good candidate for a long pipe.

No, you don't need a muffler...

What you do need is a tuned pipe!

A correctly tuned pipe will increase the power significantly.
I remember back in the days (30 or so) when I tuned a pipe for the first time.
Had this tired 60 engine that couldn't move my plane as expected, so I purchased a pipe.
Installed it "loose" so I could adjust the length while running the engine, and I'll tell you - wow...
The engine was running at max throttle as I slowly pulled out the pipe when I suddenly hit that sweet spot and could hear the rpm increase at least 25%... as if a turbo kicked in...
Couldn't believe it, but I'll tell you man, that's the only way to go.
If you want to go fast that is...

The muffler is the A1-50. Also what is a good needle setting on this thing. Engine is new so never ran. I fired her up you late night with 15% cool power and OS 8 plug and 10x6 which is all I had. Seem to run great with thr 1/4-1/2 open but when open up full it wants to cough and die. Is this because the engine is not broken in. I have the needle 2 turns out.

The Viper is good but I prefer the Lanier Predator II. A little wider stance on the gear and the wheels and axles on the Viper tend to come loose right when you need them which is every flight. Those little special screws that hold the wheels on ( Viper gear ) are hard to find or replace. This is just my personal experience. I just do what works best for me. Everyone is different. Muffler? It's hard to beat an Ultrathrust but a mousse can will work well if you know how to make one.

I tossed the Viper wheels. They melted on the first landing[:'(]. I like the Pred also with the internal linkage and thinner wing.

I tossed the wheels of my Viper too, and put on some Williams Bro's vintage wheels
that are pretty cool. It's just a club racer anyway.

Ok will try that. According to the instruction on Webra wedsite I say to start with 6-8 turns out and adjust from there which I did. I am at 4 turn out now and it appears to be working well right now. Still need to run in little more I think. Thanks all for the help.

Also Flyboy Dave what motor is that you have on your viper.

You guys ever heard of mixing 1-2 ounces of Aeroshell 500 turbine oil to a gallon of glowfuel? This is a full synthetic oil with a boiling point of 600+ degrees F. I know the ducted fan flyers use it. They tend to keep it a secret. Mobil Oil also makes a synthetic turbine oil of equal quality. Will not foul plugs or harm seals or gaskets in model aircraft engines and leaves no residue internally or externally. Glow engines just don't get hot enough to burn it. Speedy

I've heard of it...read about it...but never tried it.
Some guys claim it works great and others say it's B.S.
I'm not sure what to think about it...
If ya go into the Glow Engines forum, you'll find all sorts of opinions about oils

I've even heard of guys adding a tablespoon of gasoline to their glowfuel for cold weather flying. I'm sure as heck not going to experiment with a $400 racing engine but maybe on a clunker motor. I have tried the turbine oil with no noticeable increase in performance on a standard O.S. 46 FX. I have found that if you try hard enough you can blow up any engine if you push it hard enough! I do know one thing. If you take apart an engine and the bearings say made in China? Throw them in the trash. Bearings made in Japan and USA are fine. If you have an engine made in China...the bearings are made there also. Even the Japaneese will not put Chineese bearings in their engines. Buy cheap bearings and cheap bearings you will get! Speedy

I've heard of Gasoline...Acetone...Tolulene, Lacquer thinner, lighter fluid, etc. etc.
I've never had any problems getting my engines to start, or run, even in cold weather with just your regular, plain ordinary glow fuel. 15% Nitro Powermaster is my (pretty much ) all around std. fuel.

I hear ya on the bearings...
I think some manuf. (not to mention any names ) use "no name" bearings...no numbers stamped on them, no I.D. of any kind, and those bearings will start to rust literally over-night if you forget (get distracted ) to run your engine dry and don't use ARO
