i had one of these (edge) in saudi arabia when i was working there. i had no baffles apart from the one that comes with the kit and i never overheated the engine. this included torque rolling on a 45deg celcius day with high humidity. i also liked the servo's through the wing root idea. nice and compact.

I want to buy a carbon fiber wing tube for my Edge, but I can't figure out if the diameter is 1.5" or 38mm. I assume it is probably metric, but does anybody know for sure?

Thanks, Jim

The metal tube that BVM sent to me was labeled as 1 1/2 inch. I got a tube that size from TBM and had to spray primer on it to increase the diameter just a little, now it fits fine. It takes about half a pound off the weight.... well worth it.

I still haven't flown mine yet. Its snowing in Atlanta today, so no flying this weekend either (we're a little more spoiled on the weather than you in Colorado).

Hammbone,

I got part# JAE38x950 from TBM and it fit perfectly! Didn't even have to cut it.

Wait a minute here. 38mm is actually just a tad smaller than 1.5".
One guy tells me that a 38mm fits perfect, another guy tells me that a 1.5" is just a little small.
I'm still confused as to which one I should get.

Thanks, Jim

These planes and tubes aren't exactly built in NASA labs. There are many slight differences from plane to plane, and depending on the age of the two planes, there could be significant differences. I would measure your tube and get one as close as possible to it.

Yes, if I just had a micrometer or some calipers..........

Maybe I'll just order both tubes, keep the one that fits the best and return the other one.

Just for others who may be wondering which carbon fiber tube to get, I got a 1.5" tube and it is a little small, so I will coat it with some thinned epoxy or something.

I used spray primer.. just a couple of coats worked perfect.

Also, if anyone else is reading this thread and thinking of buying this plane.. BVMPROPS.COM just dropped the price of the Castrol Scheme to $995. That's almost low enough to make a guy buy 2 of them!

Let know how that works out Jim. I have a 1.5" CF tube laying around but wasn't sure the best way to make it a little snugger.

I'm just thinking that primer or paint may not hold up very long. I thought epoxy might last longer.

I'll let you know.

I sprayed it with primer, couple of coats, then sanded it down to size, then sprayed clear laquer on top.... so far so good.

I clamped a broom stick handle to my work bench to support the wing tube. I applied 30 minute epoxy to the tube with a paint brush. I didn't thin it or anything. I slowly rotated the tube while the glue set so that it wouldn't run and build up on one side of the tube.
The wing tube is a perfect fit now, snug but not too tight.
I think this will work great and be nice and durable.

Got the maiden in today... what a sweet flying plane! It takes off in just a few seconds, and floats down like a trainer on landings... I had to make 3 or so passes and trim the throttle down just to get it on the ground! Its balanced on the wing tube, great for break-in flights.

I was also breaking in my new Futaba 12FG radio today... on the last flight, I reached up to swat some gnats out of my face. When I put my hand back on the radio, I accidentally hit the kill switch. Luckily I was in a good position to make a final turn and land... you would have thought I planned it that way!

Hi all Especially Hammbone.

I already have the 2x2 Xtreme Edge and am thinking of getting the 2.6, could one or two of you give me some feedback on your engine preformance i.e. max revs you are getting with what prop, I am thinking of going with a 8.5Hp engine that will pull a 26" prop, will let you know what it is later.

Hi Mike,
My 2.6M Edge is not flying yet, but it's almost ready. I'm using a BME 110 on mine. It weighs about the same as most 80 size engines, but with more power :-)

Hi Jim

Do you know what max revs you are getting on the BME? and what prop are you using? Have you put a pic on here of your plane? i think the other guys would love to see it, and I have not seen a mention of the Kodiak switches on here either, which I feel are a major contribution to the logevity of our planes wheather using A123's or not.

I get about 6700 rpm's with a 27x10 prop, if I remember correctly. That is ground rpm's, I don't know what the max rpm's in the air are.
I don't have any pics yet, maybe soon.

Have you tried to get one direct from Xtreme Composites?

Try "Throttle Store" in Norway, I know its a long way off, but he seems to get things very quickly and he is the least expensive of all who stock Xtreme Composites.
