Default Flying on a frozen lake.

Flew my SC and my T-28 on a frozen lake all day on Saturday. What a blast! There's plenty of room to fly and the ice is great for taxiing, takeoffs, and landings. Now I just hope the weather stays cold enough to keep this going. It's great being able to walk out my back door and fly the T-28 instead of having to drive 20 minutes to the field.

How about inviting some of us over to fly with you? Maybe throw in some chilli and hot chocolate.

With over 15,000 lakes, it's not a problem finding a winter flying site up here in the Northland. In fact, most of the Mississippi River is frozen over as of today. Can't blame it - it was -15º this morning with a wind chill of -35º.

Wow that's pretty darn cold. I can't imagine your fingers would last very long flying in that weather with or without a transmitter mitt.

Sounds good. Maybe even a little hot bourbon tea to boot. There's a State Park at the southern end of the lake that pretty much anyone could fly at. You just have to watch out for the ice fisherman. They're not to keen on getting buzzed.

And there are fields around there that're so flat, when they're covered in snow you wouldn't know them from the lakes.

Is that Crystal Lake? I flew off of it a few times. It wasn't right out my backdoor, but real close to it. Good thing about fields is that they don't get pressure ridges. Or fishermen. At least any sober fishermen.

Flying in the center of the lake is great, even in 20+ mph winds, since the wind is less turbulent. Down lines are quick and up lines take forever though. Doesn't matter which way the wind is, flight line moves accordingly, until some snowmobiler comes along and parks his butt in the way to watch, and creates plane eating ruts in the snow.

In 1960 I rented a house on the west shore of Oslofjord in Norway near Asker. In the winter the fjord froze for several miles out. The ice was thick enough to support a car. It made a perfect flying field after you shoveled off the snow.
Every weekend the local club would come over and we would have a ball. Its one of my fondest memories. My wife didn't care much for it though.
Last spring I went back to Norway for a visit. The first time in 43 years. I could hardly find the west coast of Oslofjord, let alone the house I rented.
I could find only one of the members of the local club I knew. In those 43 years he had become a multimillionare.
