I am about to take the plunge and buy a radial. Have absolutely no experience but thinking of getting an OS FR 5-300 simply because I have some experience with other OS type engines. I bought a NIB Aeroworks Stearman at the Perry swap meet in Georgia and would like to put the radial on this plane. Understand they quit making this plane. I would appreciate any advice on the OS radial or maybe saito........robart is out of my price league. Any feedback on the Aerowork Stearman?? Many thanks,

Sonny, are you sure the Gee Bee has an OS engine? Because I saved this same video to my hard drive long ago, and I thought the reason was because it had an ASP 400 radial. I found that video when I was searching for ASP 400 info.

Im pretty sure it is the OS engine in this particular one.
If you look at the engine in thte picture, it is almost as shiny as yours is now
And only the OS comes like that from the factory.
Also, the name plate is longer than my ASP......im 98% sure it is the OS
Anyway, I emailed the owner, so lets see what he says


Earlier in the thread, there are pictures of anaother Geebee from germany, which has the ASP in it.

FOUND THIS THREAD BY ACCIDENT. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY RADIAL FREAK IN THE WORLD. GLAD TO SEE THERE ARE A LOT MORE LIKE ME... I WAS READY TO GO SEE A DOCTOR . I SCRATCH BUILT A QUARTER SCALE DAVIS D1W . HUNG A SEIDEL 770 ON THE FRONT. ALSO HAVE A THIRD SCALE VERSION OF A "K" MODEL, WITH AN RCS 215 , BEEN WORKING ON IT OFF AND ON FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS . IT HAS A 4130 CHROMOLY TUBULAR AIRFRAME. PICS CAN BE SEEN IN MY GALLERY

Working with wood is a lot easier BUT,......... Working with tubing is much more rewarding, You can actually duplicate the full scale counterpart. Weight could be a problem, thats why you should think about third scale or larger. They are doing it a lot in Europe... I would like to see a lot more of it here in the states.

Thank you very much for the compliment.. I really enjoy the fidelity to scale when taking on a project such as this. I am very fortunate in having a friend who owns the real thing and has been guiding me through the construction with photo's, drawings, dimensions etc. He's an old WW II Navy pilot and his plane is on display at the EAA Museum up in OSHKOSH Wisconsin.

Lansing, what an outstanding model. I think the Davis is a terrific aircraft. Saw the full size perform at Old Rhinebeck. It is a very agile airplane. They were using it in the Delsey Dive where the pilot throws out a roll of TP and then tries to see how many times he can cut it as it unrolls and drifts down. The pilot was doing very tight split S manuvers and really wringing it out.

Whats the wing loading and weight of the quarter scale and how does the engine perform? I have a set of quarter scale plans but have not started the project yet. DWR

Thanks for the compliment on the Davis's A lot of work went into research and building these birds... unfortunately, I dont have any videos. Been taking my time on the 1/3rd scale. (About four years so far) Just have to finish stringering out the sides and belly and she should be ready for cover. I'm struggling to keep her under 55 pounds.... Hope I make it.. This type of project is almost like building a full scale homebuilt..

Never realized my airplanes would generate a lot of interest..... A lot of people think I'm a little"off" for putting so much time ($$$$$$) LOL. into what some people refer to as a toy airplane. The Davis is really a great subject for a radial engine and the quarter scale is "just right" for the Seidel engine, almost aesthetically perfect.. The quarter scale was built from Reid plans and the third scale is built in collaboration with Gene Chase who's Davis is up at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh. I used his dimensions from his restoration and Autocad to generate a set of fuse drawings. You know, I've never figured out the wing loading on the quarter scale but she weighs 25 pounds minus fuel.. The Seidel runs great and is more than ample power. (Love that engine)

Hi guys. Bear with me, this is my first go at posting in a forum.
I've got a Magnum 400 5R radial in an 87" Ziroli stearman. Flies great, but I'm having all sorts of trouble with the engine. I can't get a rich mixture at full throttle no matter what I do. Does anyone have any ideas? It's a real shame to keep hurting such a lovely airplane with an unreliable engine.

what size prop are you using?
Is your tank far away from the engine ?
What size fuel tubing are you using ?

Hello Woody, welcome to this forum, it's always good to find people who like radials. What size is Your carburetor? On an 400 engine it should have an intake diameter of about 8mm (5/16'') and the venturi diameter should have about 6mm (not more than 1/4''). If the venturi is bigger, the pressure in the carb may be not low enough tu suck the fuel for a rich mixture.

But SJN is right also, a smaller prop with higher revs and less load may cure the mixture problem too.
