RE: CMP Zero Makeover
ORIGINAL: Baron243
Since I had some 12” 22ga Futaba servo leads on hand, I decided to convert 4 of the HD220A servos over to the heavier leads. Note: You will definitely need a low wattage pencil type soldering iron with a fine tip. It wasn’t too difficult, as I was able to do a credible job by hand on the first one, but since I had potentially 9 more to change I decided to make a simple jig to do the others. If anyone is interested, I’ll try to post pictures and a drawing of the jig. The jig definitely makes the process easier. It occurs to me that there is an added benefit to doing this; as you can now make the servo lead any length that you want, there by eliminating one connection and its associated voltage drop!
(More delivered voltage = more power.)

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Ok, here are the pics of my servo wire jig. There is also a jpg of a line drawing of it that I started. I think that between the pics and the drawing, you should be able to figure it out. Use a 25 watt iron with a fine tip and keep the tip clean. A solder sucker is also useful but copper braided wick will work too, (to unsolder the old leads), it’s just a little more awkward is all. My average time to change the leads is about 7 minutes when using this jig. Take your time and use just enough heat to do the job. I’ve done 5 servos so far with 12” leads. The next set will have 24 – 36” leads or what ever is required to reach all the way to the receiver. Good Luck!
MC – Did you get your giant Stinger up yet? I’m anxious to hear how these servos worked for you! It’ll be another week or two until I can try mine out… too many projects and too little time!

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Robert,
Thanks for the pic's and info. Great idea....
Giant Stinger was completed yesterday so it will be next weekend. I did however while programing the transmitter found them to be very quick and loud. Sure seems like they are rough sounding but they do operate smooth. Kinda hard to describe. I have two servos on each aileron so there is plenty of torque. I'm using one on each half of the elevator and they all seem to track well.
At first I thought there were grinding noises but I pulled one apart and it's fine. It may be the way the gears are cut and or finished off. Anyway I won't know for sure until I have it in the air under loads.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
MC,
I thought that the servos seemed a little noisy too, and I also pulled a gear train apart to check it out, and could find nothing wrong. I did notice that the gear teeth are all straight cut while some of the better quality servos that I've been used to using have some helical cut gears in them. That could be the difference right there as helical cut gears run smoother - you get what you pay for. I think that they will work just fine though for most applications except 3D.
I am very interested in how they perform in your giant Stinger. I used to have one of those with a G-62 on the nose and it had various servo combinations in it over the years. I had a single Hi Tec HS-635 on all the surfaces except rudder, running at 6v, and it flew fine; although it was much snapier when I later changed them out for HS-5645s which is what probably what led to its demise. (Left wing broke about a third of the way out at 200ft!) If you're running the stock strip ailerons, two servos are probably overkill, but it won't hurt anything and it will be interesting to see how well they stay in sync. What did you use to match them, just the TX ??

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Robert,
Yep, just used the transmitter, set up the first servo and then tied the aileron to it, then set the other one and adjusted lingage till it was right on. Worked OK. Since these are analog units it doesn't have to be perfect. The Giant Stinger is a plane I used to admire 20 years ago. When Tower first came out with the ARF I had to have one. I have a Brillie 45cc on it but it runs every bit as good as my DA 50's. So, it won't be blarringly fast but will be a good kick around plane for high wind days..... I am really wanting to get my Zero completed.
Ordered Robart gear in Feb and am still waiting on them to fill the order..... Go figure...

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Work to my Zero has come to a temporary halt as I am 12 days POST surgery for rotator cuff repair.
Feeling a bunch better today, so I may go back to the hangar and tinker some more on the H-9 retract retro fit.
One wing is pretty much done except for the bolting in place. Then I have to duplicate all that work on the other wing.

I don't have the Zero yet. My buddy has one partially compleated that he lost interest in; and we are negotiating a deal. That's what origionally got me onto this thread. I'm currently working on a scratch built P-51 from a Dan Santich plan for which I have a set of Byron mustang retracts. The other problem I have with the Zero deal is that it needs a set of retracts. I heard that the Robarts were out of stock and back ordered, so I'm looking for alternatives. Jim mentioned that he is using H-9 retracts which I hadn't thought of. I don't have CG info on the Zero, but it should be at about 25% of the mean aerodynamic chord (M.A.C.) which I should be able to calculate if I have the length of the root and tip chord, the distance from root to tip, and the leading edge sweep angle, or the distance from the leading edge at the tip to a line drawn perpendicular to the root at the leading edge. (I hope that made sense!) This gives the planform layout from which the M.A.C. can be found.
Jim, how much work was it to retrofit those H-9 retracts, and which ones did you use?

The retracts are from a H-9 P-47 1.50
I am doing a seperate build thread here [link]http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/fg42/28437-cmpro-nitro-models-50cc-zero-build.html[/link] and should be getting some more pics up soon.
Really not that much work and I think they will work just fine !

Well.... it seems that this site is afraid to acknowledge that there are other R/C sites.
Just go to FIying GlANTS site and look under the "Git 'R' done Giant scale for CMPro Zero.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Jim, was just trying to get there but to no avail. Thanks
Just got an email from Robart:
Mike,
Unfortunately, it will be another couple of weeks. We need to manufacture the Side Frames for the 630RS Retracts, then get them heat treated.
Sorry.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
I just ordered this CMP 80" Zero from RCOnly and talked to Barry there. He seems like a very nice guy. I am going to be getting the Century Jet retracts with the Zero because RCOnly can give me a better deal than if I order them from Century Jet. The CMP Zero was not listed on his web page, but someone on another thread told me he had them in stock so I e-mailed him and the deal was set from there. I cannot wait to get started. My P-40 will be done this week and I will than start on the Zero
Here is RCOnly's web site if anyone is interested.

Jim,
You will like the kit. It does go together quickly and is a pretty decent deal for the money. What engine are you going with? I purchased Robart gear and am still waiting on the cylinders. Order back in March.......
If you have any questions just post....

MC,
I have a Brillelli 46GT I will use for power. It is a great running engine and will spin a Bambula 21x10 at 7000RPM so I should have plenty of power.
Sorry to here you have to wait for the retracts from Robart.[&o] I have the Century Jet retracts in my P-40 and they work great. I called Century Jet and their model 32199 retracts fit this Zero. I will be ordering my Century Jet retracts from RCOnly becasue Barry can get then at a better price than if I order them myself.

Jim,
Nice looking engine for the Zero. What size prop are you planning on using? I am planning on using a Brillelli 46GT with a Bambula 20x10 prop. I have a XYZ-50 in a Skyshark P-40 that spins that same prop at 6950 RPM. The Brillelli 46GT engine I fell is a little stronger than the XYZ-50 so it should have plenty of power for the Zero.

I have a Zoar 20x10 to try on there.
I had a 20x8 on the profile bird... she only has MAYBE a gallon of fuel run through her, so I might have to run the 20x8 a little till she breaks in.

RE: CMP Zero Makeover
Great looking bird......I have the same Brillelli 46GT engine. Took it out this weekend and I have no spark at all. Going to have to pull it apart to see what is up. First time to try to start it up in over a year....... Been sitting around waiting for a plane so I just put it in a Stinger,,,,, I use a 21 X 8 prop and it pulls like a 50cc engine.
Just canceled my order from Robart and ordered a set of retracts from Tower Hobbies. Go figure. Robart has put me off since March and Tower had them in stock...... I will have them in a week and should be able to finish her up in a week or so after.
Still haven't heard where the correct cg is supposed to be. May have to do the manual calculations...... Ugh....

Glad to hear you have a set of retacts on the way. I hope to have my CMP-Zero and Century Jet retracts here this week. I will maiden the P-40 this weekend if everything goes right. My Brillelli 46GT has been setting around for a while to. Maybe I'll take it out and see if she will run before I mount the 46GT into the CMP-Zero.
What Robarts did you get from Tower? I would like to take a look at them. I have the Century Jet 32199's coimg for the Zero.

Jim,
These are the Robart 635 RS (air up / air down) 90 degree units. (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMUA8) I was going for the 730's (air up / spring down) but they are having problems with the locking mechanisms. So I hope to have these here soon and finish up the wings. Will be ready for the maiden soon I hope. We have a fun fly this coming weekend so I know I won't be able to have it done by then.
Take your spark plug out and check for spark. My unit was dead. I won't know what the deal is until I pull it down and take a closer look. May be the hall sensor......
Good Luck

MC,
Nice look retracts. They should really do the job nicely for you. I will check for spark before I do anything. I have the newer CH ignition I got from Brillelli. What EI do you have? I understand they were having some problems with the older S/S ignitions on the Brillelli's.

Jim, Yep, I got the newer one as well. I sprung for the variable spark set up thinking it was better. I'll know after I have some time looking at it tonight.
You get the information on the spinner and prop set up?
