Default Sig Wonder

Just finished building a Sig Wonder. I actually built this kit to test out some alternative covering materials to Monokote. I used Sig Koverall on the wing, Skyloft on the tailfeathers and Silkspan on the fuselage. Paint is just Sig Dope. It flys great...very fast but very predictable. Engine is OS .15CV. I really liked the Sig Koverall product. Very strong. This is a great sport plane project for those looking for something simple, different and exciting to fly!

Looks like it turned out great! How do you like the hand launches and the skid landings so far? Do they make the plane any more difficult to operate and maintain?

The hand launches are a piece of cake. I take about 3 running steps and gently launch, slightly nose up. It will accelerate and climb pretty fast. Landing is best if you have a nice grass field. My reccomendation is to try to build as light as possible to keep the wing loading down. This keeps the landings very slow and gentle. Mine isn't light...it is kind of a pig, (too much dope) but landings are still uneventful. Put tip skids underneathe each wingtip! I like it because I can take it just about anywhere for quick flights.

I fly a Sig Wonder with an OS 15FP engine 2 Futaba mini-quick servos on the elevator and ailerons and a Futaba 148 servo on
the throttle. I have replaced the skids on the bottom because I usually land on the paved runway. My Wonder was originally
covered in Econ-O-Kote and it de-laminated after 2 or 3 years. It is now covered in MonoKote. Uncovering and recovering a plane is no fun. I have been flying my Wonder since 1996 and still love it although I only get it out 3 or 4 times a year.

Hand launching can be done standing still, no need to take running steps. I have done this with an O.S..10. It is a little scary the first time watching it fall the the ground, but just let it fall and gain speed till it is about two feet of the ground then gradually pull up.
It is a lot easier with a .25 engine, no fall at all. I never used a .15 but it should do fine.
This plane flies fery well with a .10 till you get into trouble. If you stall to close to the ground there is not enough power to get back up. With a .25 you can get out of most anything. I read post of people that put .32s in them, but I think that is a little much.
This is a verry fun little plane to own and fly. A little scarry the first couple of times you fly it, but once you get use to it, it is a lot of fun.

I have two sig wonders. The first is a blue angels with an asp 15 and it flies very well. A light toss in the air and it flies out. Great performer. Check your balance very carefully. My second wonder I built just to see if it would fly. I built from scratch with the plan and put an evolution 46NT on the front. It took a lot of modifications to get it to work. I built up the wing mount some and had to mount a custom battery all the way in the tale. Also the elevator and TH servo are also in the tale. Once completed the sig balanced without any led. I did put a 1/4 once in the wing tip to counter the weight of the muffler. Wonder number one is probably a 60 mph airplane. The 46NT wonder is well over 100 mph. It is a little squirrelly on take off though. Great flyer and glides in for landings.

The little 4 oz dubro fits just perfect inside the fuz. I changed my engine out for a new magnum XLS.15 with a 8x3 combat prop and I can't hardly keep up with it at full speed now. This is a heck of an improvment over the old magnum XL.15 that was in it.
I rarely flew this little bird because it just wasn't that quick, but with this new model engine it's a blast to fly now.....

That is right. It can be launched with no running steps. My wonder with the 25 would fly right out of my hand.

Yep, with the new little xls 15 wide open an a 8x3 prop I just barely hafta give it a toss from standing still an it flys off just fine. This plane is a blast to fly now with the new engine. Now I can fly it anywhere I go if I have a short strip of grass to land it on.

Just about done with mine using a MDS .18 I was just wondering are my choice of servo's okay. I plan on usin HS-85 MG on elevator HS-81 on aileron and HS-55 for throttle

those are great flyers. I had a blast with one i got at a swap meet. Best fun I ever had with a plain bearing .40[X(]
hand launch was easy, full throttle, piont it any where, even straight up, and just let go!
sold when i moved, I 'll have to build another someday.

I'm using about the same set-up. 85 for Ailer/81 for Elev and throttle. I don't think i would use a 55 for the throttle-more for electrics. OS15CV-A for power. I'm hoping this will be fairly fast???

724SP,
Cool colors on your Wonder!
I have the kit, but I have yet to build it. I have an MVVS .15 begging for a home!

I have used the HS55 for throttle on a few of my planes. If the throttle operates smoothly, they work fine.

Over the years ,I have built several of these little baby's. There the most fun one could ever have. Two of them I put rudder, talk about a flat spin, wow. it the first plane that i seen that could climb in a flat spin. But I prefer the 32 it give the best balance for plane/engine. The 40's are good if you like the speed which i do, but wing loading is a bear, it not much fun fighting the elevator a slow speed for those of you that like slow acrobat maneuver then the 15 is a good deal. Get one and you will be a believer. just my 2cent.

Wow-can't believe putting 32 or 40 sizes on this little sucker. This thing weighs nothing, can't wait to fly it. Never seen one fly but these posts are getting me excited. Should be fun in between flying the bigger stuff. Heres a shot of the completed fuse.

Looks good Frenchie, I have one that a friend is building for me,,,we trade motors and stuff, he is a heck of a builder, mostly I hang out in 1/2a, but I picked up a GP stik with a saito .65 on it for about the price of the motor alone.....I never had a saito before, hope its a good runner...Rog

Had it out for the maiden this weekend, and needed alot of down elevator???????????? anybody have this problem. Im hoping its not a wing incidence problem. I have the balance correct and the engine has correct down thrust. For level flight after trimming i measured about a 1/16" down elevator. I'll try a little more nose weight but i don't think thats it.

ps-I also tryed one turn on each aileron servo link-put a little more up to the ailerons-didn't help, and may try one more turn.

Is a Webra 40 too heavy for this plane? I'm putting everything as far back as possible to help the balance...but will it be enough?

I think it is but that don't mean it won't work. The plane is designed for real lite wing loading. A hot 15 really makes this thing move for it's size, and will float nice for landings and easy take off. MHO
