I got tired of the four screws holding the canopy section on so here is my solution - not quite finished yet but you get the idea - simple pair of dowels at front and a homemade spring slider pin at rear, makes removing canopy quick and easy, should hold up OK - I keep the metal tabs at canopy to help maintain alignment. You will note that the plywood was already in place, just had to remove shaped solid balsa above ply base - fuselage plate is plywood so the reciever hole for pin latch was a natural.

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Finally got a break in the wind speed today. We've (Okla) had 30 to 40mph winds everyday for quite a while. Plus more bad storms of course. Anyway took advantage of the lull and got my maiden flight in. Had down elev dialed in so the rotation was smooth .
Trimmed in a little more during the flight and a click or two aileron was all it needed. Flys a lot like my Zero just doesn't make turns quite as fast. Very stable on takeoff and landing. The 1/2 dia Robart struts really soak up the touchdown.
Sorry,, no in-flight pics or video. Was by myself.

Dturtz,
The mains look great! Congratulations on the maiden.
I'm about to star mine with a Evo 35 and Keleo scale muffler.

Hi, Aeroscale,
Do you think its ok to mount the Evo 35 on that nylon mount that comes with the kit?
Thanks for any help,
Flavio
Here's a photo of the 35GT installation in the Jug. EVO Pitts wrap around muffler. Fits within cowl nicely.

Guys,
Please, don't ignore me.
I'll be installing an EVO 35GT2 on my P-47 and I'm wondering if it's ok to use the mount that came with the kit or maybe using a nylon mount.
Thanks for any input!

Heya Flavio!
I have the exact same setup.
I DID use the Evolution/MVVS Round Mount and made little standoffs.
I made them on a leigh, but you can just use a block of plywood etc as well.
With a motor that size, specially a 2 stroke, I would not use anything plastic.
Best regards,
Götz

Hi, Der Goetz!
Thanks for replying! BTW, congratulations on Germany getting into finals on EuroCup. I've just watched the game!
Anyway, I have that blue round mount too. Did you happen to use the blind nuts already installed or had to make different holes?
Thanks again!

Flavio,
I used the mount that came with the kit. you just modify by drilling a hole further back on the mount, and if you used the Evolution inverted wrap around muffler, you have to cut the lower portion of the firewall to make clearance for the muffler. and epoxy some plywood to cover the hole made when doing this.

it's fine to use the one that comes with the kit as it was intended to handle the evolution engine. If you want to change it that's fine but it is plenty sturdy enough for the airframe.

here's a couple of pics of my finished bird.
just under 21 lbs. glassed,
3W-28, 18x6 prop (for break in) and the included mechanical retracts.
The arf kit is put together pretty good, congrats to Hangar 9 they did a good job with the kit even though it's not scale it's close and still looks good

Hi, guys,
Thank you all for the inputs. I'll go with the aluminum mount and an inverted muffler instead of the Pitts, in order to avoid the work on the firewall. I'll keep you posted.

Well I am almost done. I am putting flow through vents on the side to give it a more scale appearance and to aid in the cooling of the G-38.
I made the nose art with water slide decals. The marking are all vinyl done on my cutter. Panel lines with a TF panel line pen. I didn't think the lines would look that good with a pen but with added airbrushing it looks pretty good. I used Robart hinges to hinge all control surfaces. I used the stock gunbarrels for these shot but I will be making some more scale looking ones.

looks GREAT! It's amazing how much better they look with a little time and effort.
I would prefer to build but I don't have the time anymore to build. since moving down south from Michigan I work year round instead of seasonal so the arf's for me are the way to go. I wish more producers that are putting out the arf's would sell a plain version since a multitude of guys are tearing them apart any ways and putting their own touches on them.
Anyway great job, it looks really good.

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
After a long hiatus I am back to finish this project. Wow, never seen an ARF with so many issues in my life. After installing the CA hinges on the tail I did not like them (thought they were too stiff) so I removed those and replaced with Robarts. The tail wheel/rudder rod assembly coupling design would drain a 12-volt battery in 2 seconds due to the design inherent binding it created. So I let the rod go to the rudder alone and installed a pull pull on the tailwheel by simply buying two front wheel steering horns and attaching them to the tail wheel. What I ended up with is a super smooth tail-wheel rudder operation that does not drain the battery. One note is that the pull pull wires had to be crossed in order to work out with left and right matching with the rudder.
Now I have advanced to the retracts…UGGG! What am I doing wrong here? I installed the servo, no problem there although I had to re-drill and tap all new holes (could not use the predrilled holes). I install the servo horn and here we go again with the retract operation being so torque-d up that the control horn practically bends off the servo when lowing the gear. Again, this is because it takes what feels like a very high 10 lbs of pull to operate the retract mechanism gear deployment movement! I think if I get past this one I will have this project licked. Any advise on this one would be appreciated.
P.S. Is Hanger 9 trying to get me to have a battery failure in mid flight of the maiden voyage or something?

Sierra. Type in pdubree and find my postings on the hanger-9 p-47. They explain how to make the retracts work better and other info this plane.

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
As much as there seems to be an issue with every single step of this kit I must confess that it is amazing that they can frame and cover these models in a factory and sell them for as little as they do. They have to have over 100 man hours in these kits. The framing and covering are better than I could ever do and I have built approx a dozen or more built up models from balsa kits over the years.
I would have never considered a project this large until this option of this reasonably priced giant scale ARF came along. I can't wait to fly this size of aircraft, everyone says the larger birds fly smoother. I am hoping to complete this month sometime.

Can anyone using the G38 tell me if there is a solution to the problem of the prop being so far out in front of the cowel. Did you leave it that way or is there a solution. I have the old style G38. Is the new version shorter? Will appreciate any help.

I have the G38 (new version). Doesn't seem any longer than the old one. But I have taken no measurements.
Zenoah sits in there pretty good. Big cowl. Can mount it forward or back a little.

Thanks for the reply. If I move the cowl as far forward as possible, the engine(old style) sticks out one and five eighths inch in front of the cowl. Flywheel is even with front of cowl. Engine measures six and seven eighths from rear of mount(cup style mount) to prop. Using bennet style muffler and mount.

Chop the front of the firewall off and move it back the amount needed to make it fit. I did this for my SPE 40 and it was easy. Made a new beefier firewall and pinned it from the sides as well. Some triangle stock on the inside and your done.
