Default changing shock oil?

hi, im just starting to renovate my worn out, mistreated FG beetle, its all standard apart from a new Zenoah G260RC engine.
i have built some DIY shock socks and took a look at the shock oil too.
what color is it supposed to be, minee was a pale browny gray coulour.
i think it needs either topping up or refilling cos my suspension oil hasnt been changed in years, and it doesnt bounce back much.
does anyone know the standard or recommended weight of oil for a stock petrol FG beetle?
is it silicone based too?

thanks, any replies would be greatly appreciated....

chris...

If you are a hardcore basher something like 30wt in the front and 35wt in the rear would be a good place to start

ya, i would start off as chris said. you should probly get some difrent wieght oils tho for tuning. with a little time you can really get that thing to handle well. not so bouncy and jerky. the not bouncing back point probly isnt your shock oil tho. that would be your springs. try puting the spring collors in there.

With the weight of these cars, 35 wt oil is way too soft. In my sedan I use 7000 wt in the front and 4000 wt in the rear. I would assume the off-roads would be somewhere in the 1000 - 3000 wt range.

Are you sure you're using shock oil? I've never heard of shock oil going that high, highest i've seen was 120wt? I run 15wt belray fork oil($8 a quart) in my baja, its cheap and does a great job, i'm not sure if the fg's can use silicon oils or not, the baja can't.

FGs can use silicone. 2000wt stock, although I gather they have started using something lower these days. Personally I recommend 600.

fg offer up to 10,000wt, my onroad uses 4000 and 8000 wt, also there are a greater variety of springs rates and sizes from long shocks to short available for onroad, haven't seen a big variety offered for offroad
