RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Maidened my Skybolt with the 125 today (3 bladed prop 14X7) . Flew perfect, used 5" as the CG, didn't require any trim, all electronics in instruction manual posit. The 125 really pulls this baby around. I can't wait to go to high gains tomorrow. It was snap rolling like a ban-chi today in low, can't imagine what it will do in high. Might try a bigger 2 bladed prop also, just to see what the difference is.

What size for the 3 blade prop for the Super Skybolt? And where do you get the spinner? Thanks for the info.

My Skybolt flies awesome with an OS61. There really are only a couple of 3 blades available for any engine size. That's a 12x6(3) Master Airscrew in the picture. It's one of the props the 61 does it's best with, 2-blade or 3-blade. It does ok on the Skybolt with a 12x8(3) but a 13x6 2-blade is slightly better than the 12x8(3). The MA 12x6(3) is just a touch better than those other two.
Graupner makes some good 3 blades, but I've only found the 12.5x7(3) and haven't had a chance to test it yet. My tests are more than just "see if it seems faster or slower".
The spinner came from Tower. They've got a number of spinners for 3blades. More choice in 3 blade spinners than choice in props !!!

For the Super Skybolt, where do you measure the 5" CG? Is it from the front of the top wing in the center?

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
The top wing has two 4-40 bolts in the center - a front one and a back one. Mine is balanced right in front of the back one, which is also about 5" from the LE of the top wing. Not to insult the intelligence of all the SS owners who already know about the two bolts, just trying to be very clear.

Anyone got a photo of the Saito 100 installed (sideways)? I can't make my mind up between an OS 91 FS II or the Saito 100.
Anyone know if OS is coming out with a new 100 size 4-stroke, similar to the OS FS 81a. That engine seems to turn better numbers than the 91FS II.

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Just bought one of these ARF's and I like the manual, but the covering job is the worst I have ever seen. Spent 7 hrs last night ironing out wrinkles and im still not done. I certainly hope the plane is as fun as you guys have convinced me that it is by your posts. Otherwise, I made a big mistake. A sharpei puppy couldnt compare to the wrinkles in this thing.
What engine would you recommend at a 4500 ft altitude?? I want something with good power as I plan on puting a smoke system in this bird. Im thinking a YS 110, but need to know from you more experienced guys if I can run a YS on 15% nitro???? Ive seen that most run it on 20 to 30%. I can get 15% cheap through the club I belong to, but 30% is difficult to come by.
Thanks for any input you can offer

the skybolt will be everything you expect in the air, and the bonus is this bird lands like a trainer.
as for the wrinkles, i bought 3 of these kits, but the second one i had to ship back because the covering job looked like it was used in the trainees class.........the rest have all been good.
i gave one kit away and still have my backup kit, but to be honest, the only way i can see needing a backup is if i have a radio failure.............this is one docile bird, but wil do a lot of the pattern manuevers with ease.

Hey Guys
I'm thinking about a smoke system for my Skybolt. Two questions: would an OS904 stroke be OK and what is the best system to use? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Anyone tried this with floats? We have a float fly next weekend, I've picked up the 40-60 size GP floats, just wondering if anyone's already done it and might share any wisdom....

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Hey guys, I have a used Saito .80 that needs a home. The requirments look like this plane would do nicely but it seems everyone wants a ton of power. I'm just getting strated into some aerobatics so speed and excessive power is not what I need . . . yet. This will be my first Bi-plane too. Right now my main plane is a venture 60 (Kinda like a 4 star). Is the skybolt a good third airplane to mess around with? Sounds like the landings are nice, could I control it in the air puttin' around while throwing in some basic aerobatic manuvers? Thanks for the help!

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
I just picked up one of these kits and have a question about the finish on the cowl. You can clearly see the cloth weave on the entire surface. The paint coverage is far from uniform.
Is this typical of a Great Planes ARF? I've built numerous Hangar 9 ARF's and their glass parts are beautiful.
I was thinking of clear coating the entire cowl then wet sanding the clear to get rid if the texture and either re-coating or polishing. Anyone got a suggestion for the clear paint that would be compatable with the red paint?
George

Silver Kiwi,
Thanks for the reply. I have contacted Great Planes and am waiting to hear from them. I was just wondering if the weave texture is standard for this cowl. I have never seen another one.
Cheers,
George
