Losi Clutch help
Still simi-new in the hobby and picked up a RTR Losi 8ight. Just after installing oil into the diffs and a few stretches down the road to test, i noticed some over rev and not a whole lot of go. Assuming the shoes had had it just like my buddies who's is the same age (Maybe 1/2 Gallon) thats what we checked. they really didnt seem to look too bad. I mean they showed wear, but not hardly what I was thinking after seeing the car barely go. We checked the mesh, it was fine. Is it possible we messed with something when installing the diff oil? or do these shoes just really suck? or what?
Thanks for your tips

RE: Losi Clutch help
It's just the factory Losi eight clutch set up. Not sure what the design is called. It comes with two alluminum clutch shoes. There are room for four
I did'nt understand Integras comment. I think he's asking if I blew the grease out of the inner bearings. If thats the question, then no, but I dont think thats the problem. It was running fine with the factory grease in the diffs.

maybe it' s just the flywheel slipping on the crank. just remove the clutch bell and tighten that flywheel nut again.
if it still slipping after that then we'll try something else.

I've had to seat a clutch before by giving it full throttle and have someone place on the ground and hold for a second. If however the shoes are gone, I'd replace them with Kingheadz or Dynamite shoes.

RE: Losi Clutch help
Ok I'll check the flywheel
I dont have a caliper, so i cant judge the shoes. I always thought they were gone when they were worn to the springs.........? Like I said, still new tho....
I added 5K to front, 7K to mid, and 3K to rear
The reason Im thinking its not the shoes is because my buddy has the same set up and had the same problem, but he said his shoes looked way worse, and had crazy looking wear to them. I dont know, maybe it is the shoes

The CVDs are the joints on the driveshafts. One side has a "dogbone" which is round with a pin through it. The CVD end is round but has a cylinder with a setscrew. I had that same problem. The center driveshaft running from the center diff to the front diff came loose and I experience exactly what you describe. An easy way to check is to put the thing on a stand with the wheels off the ground. Punch the gas and then hit the brakes. If the front or back wheels continue to spin, either the front or rear center driveshaft came loose.
I'm willing to bet it's either that or your flywheel is loose.

Ah man
I think that is exactly what it is... I did notice a loss of breaking power too. Man that should have meant more to me at the time. If the Front or rear isnt engaging anymore, the brakes will suffer. wow cool.
thanks guys, i'll be checking that out asap

RE: Losi Clutch help
Hey Integra, How do you check the clutch shoes with calipers? Are you checking overall width of the shoes while installed or the thickness of the shoe or what? Never heard of this and looking for a way to know when shoes are going to go.
Thanks

RE: Losi Clutch help
I think integra is talking about thickness. The width will mushroom anyway. Measuring thickness is telling you how much the actual contact patch has worn. If your shoes are down to the springs, then its time for new ones. Also, depending on how long you run your shoes on the springs, inspect the CB closely as well.

RE: Losi Clutch help
measure the shoes On the flywheel....measure the contact patch WITHOUT touching the adjacent shoe.
stock carbons Brand new are 24.5mm
Stock silver alum are 24.4mm
KH 7075's are 24.6mm
steel flywheel has some KH 7075's after 2 weekends of racing. everything else is brand new

RE: Losi Clutch help
Integra, have you ever heard of people running a combination of clutch shoes, like 2 aluminium and 1 carbon? If so, what does this accomplish?
Thanks

its an AWSOME combo....i normally Always run at least 1 carbon in my set-up......it allows the shoes to Not slag out and leave behind BS alum on the belll.....the clutch will run a bit hotter due to the slippage....but in general i like the feel of a carbon in the mix of things...pending on the track is when ill go to 100% alum or 1/2 and 1/2
