Default Saito Price Increase?

Is it just me or did Saito engine prices just jump 20 - 50 dollars across the board? The .82 is now 299 up from 264 and the FA-100 went from 279 to 329. Guess these engines just got marked off of my list. Was looking at the FA100 to power my P47 (already have the .82 in a corsair) but I think Saito just got tired of my flip flopping and decided to help me out with deciding on the Mag 1.20. So whats the deal? Is the rising value of the Yen increasing prices? Current sagging global economy driving prices up? Or is Saito pulling an O.S.?

global economy..

my latest strategy: turn all the glow engines in my arsenal to spark ignition and gasoline, and buy gas engines from now on..

When OS prices jumped I said it was coming to all brands. As soon as the top two importers increase their prices, the others will follow.

My post improperly, and in violation of RCU policy, contained political (and monetary) opinion relating to the topic of this thread.

well, if one was about to spend the money right now for a brand new engine, there are still authorized dealers selling brand new saitos on ebay for actually less than the old price that horizon hobby was selling them for. but i will bet that when they are gone, the price will go up there as well.

It's odd though, as the dollar is stonger right now than it has been for a while.

I'm glad I just added a Aviastar, from Sig, to my engine stable.

The dollar lost over 5% to the yen in recent weeks.

Unfortunately, prices always increase. The question is if the engines are still worth the price. IMO, they are even though I hate the price jumps.

In my opinion the glow engines and fuels are just to pricey now and I think I will go with gas on the next engine purchase. These engines are manufactured for practacally noting and marked up. I know someone will say something to contradict this but think about it they have had the same desigh for 50 years or so and a compueter can design and manufacture the thing without much human interaction expect for assembly.

I kind-of agree with you blw, but it depends on the purpose of the engine. If your flying 3D or something to that effect where weight makes a difference, then yes, I'd say it may still be worth it to that individual. However, to those of us not flying 3D (mine is going into a Warbird) a standard "sport" type four stroke like a Magnum or a Thunder Tiger would probably be a much more logical choice. My first Saito, and first four stroke for that matter, was an .82 thats still sitting in a Corsair. I also had a 1.00 a while back, but sold the plane it was going in so I sold the engine as well, apparently I should have kept it but at the time had no need for it. I'm just trying to figure out which engine, Mag or TT, I should go with at this point. Almost bought the 1.20 Mag but don't want to overpower it as much as I don't want to underpower it. Guess the latter would be worse seeing as how you can always throttle back.

How does a Mag 120 4 stroke compare to a Saito 120 or OS 120 in performance, are they as reliable? Is the difference in price worth it? I know that a OS 120 and I believe the Saito also include the Glow Plug which I believe the Magnum does not. The latest price on a OS glow plug is around $12.00.

I haven't found any official test numbers or reviews on the Mag's but everyone around here that chimes in usually loves them and says the power is comperable to an O.S., run great and have a great idle. If you dig around you can usually find RCU members who have posted readings of them and they seem to be quite comperable to an O.S. of similar displacement.

Edit: I've seen a lot of posts reference the fact that their Magnum has not dead sticked on them a single time.

Every time I think "wow, that engine is too expensive" I stop and ask myself "could *I* make it for that price" and then I realize that most engines are still a bargain.

However, the price rises that are coming will sure put a kink in many modellers' budgets.

I was rubbing shoulders with someone in the hobby industry here in NZ over the weekend and they told me that OS#8 glowplugs will soon cost around NZ$25 here (that's US$13.50). Owch!

Look out DLG, here I come! :-)

Glad I bought a bunch of #8's for my 2 strokes last time I went to the LHS then......laughable. If #8's end up jumping to 13.50, Type F's will be 20+ bux next thing you know. But that may only be the case in New Zealand...who knows, with the dollar being about worthless these days, probably here too. Electric will end up being the only option by the time it's over and done with.

One guy had the cheek to ask for $180 !!

Huh!
I was considering buying another Saito for Christmas! But I guess HorizonHobby or Saito - whoever sets those prices - think that I want to buy more expensive products during Christmas. Well, I guess I spend my money on something else.

I was looking at a Saito 325 but not after the $400-500 price hike. I don't mind spending a little more but I am not financing their bailout. I will just go gas and spend 1/3 of the money. Desperate people do desperate things.

same in uk, very expensive plugs now. Nearly a 1/4 the cost of a gallon of fuel. I was told precious metals, platinum had gone up.

Now, if we could just get those sellers of the $25 ignition modules to sell them with a 1/4x32 spark plug sized cap...
