Finished.
The thread I mean. Can't believe I read these thousands of posts over the last 8-9 days.
Very interesting I gotta say.
One thing I found strange though guys, there was no mention of what sort of oil to use [sm=teeth_smile.gif]

Start with page 130 and read...there is a ton of opinions on oils especially AMSoil Sabre...

Either is fine, just leave it in place. I always leave mine active.

Leave it in place. The butterfly needs the tension to operate properly without sticking.
Granted, it's not a black/white, Yes/No type of thing. But the folks that I respect in gas engines say to leave it in place. I've done it both ways without a problem in the past.

DA USA:
MTW wraparound header for DA 50 with 25mm drop
MTW RE2 Pipe
Teflon coupler kit, for 25mm dia headers
MTW Plywood canister holder, 55mm diameter or KS Comfort mount
You can use an ES pipe in stead.
ORIGINAL: JoeAirPort
Jody, what header and pipe work good on this engine for 3D flying? I'm thinking of doing a ES composites pipe on mine for an EF 88" Yak. I'd like to bolt something on that works out of the box if possible.

RE: DL-50 engine
Yes, it was humor
I know what a touchy subject that can be. I'm on Synth for break in by the way
Guys, while I'm here I'm putting my DL into something what do you think would be better of these 2/
[link=http://www.globalrc.co.uk/sukhoi%20su26.html]Sukhoi[/link]
or
[link=http://www.servoshop.co.uk/index.php?pid=A162P&area=Aircraft]Extra[/link]
The Extra is around 19lb so maybe a bit big but my DL can certainly pull it but as I say, it's a big model.
It's in a 13lb EDGE at the moment so you can imagine what a handful that is, it's vertical on pretty much a quarter throttle
What ya reckon?
Hmm, you can see the Extra flying here on a Zenoah G62. How would the DL50 compare to that engine?

RE: DL-50 engine
19 lbs is a lot of weight for a 50cc engine on a stock muffler to fly the way I like. I had a piped 62 on a 19+ lb plane and it pulled it out of hover very well, on stock muffler not as well as I like.,
I now have a 58 cc (on stock muffler) in the same plane at 17lbs, the plane flies much much better and has about the same pull out as the piped 62 in the plane at 19+lbs.

RE: DL-50 engine
IMO,
You will have a tough time balancing the WM Extra with the DL50. The WM Extra is a very underrated ARF... and matched with the right power plant is very 3D capable. (I have seen one with a FPE 4.2 that would hover at about 1/2 throttle)... It's actually the same size as the Comp ARF 2.3m Extra... Must people fly that size model with a ZDZ80.
The Sukhoi is better suited for the DL50. I have the Yak55SP with a DL50 and it's a fantastic flying machine. I would imagine the Sukhoi would fly similar. Balance and weight is not an issue. The hardware is very usable, and parts fit very well.

Has any one heard where you can get a 18 by 18 prop

Ok so I got my new DL fired up yesterday. This is my first gas plane (Aero-works Extra 260 35cc) and first gas engine and I love it - well so far anyways. I love the sound of it though. I have a J-Tec pitts wrap around muffler on it with smoke tapped in.
It fired right up 2nd flip after choke was taken off. I let it run for twenty minutes - mostly high-idling (2000-3000 rpm) with a few minor revs here and there. My question is: How long do I need to let it break-in like this before flight? It hardly used any gas at all, maybe 4-5 ounces max. Forgive me for not having 2 weeks of time to read this whole thread to find the answer.

If you can put an hour on it you would be fine. Don't try to fly till you adjust the needles for you area, altitude, humidity, air density, etc., factory settings just get you close and insure that it will start up and run. Also, resist the urge to adjust it rich for break in, it will only make it run poorly. Adjust the high end to run about 100 RPM to the rich side of peak and you'll be fine.

RE: DL-50 engine
You cannot break-in an engine at idle. It needs to be used in the intended manner it was designed/purchased for.
Fortunately, gas/petrol engines really do not need a break-in in the same way as glow engines. Just tune it up and go fly. Try not to run it under a lot of heat generating stress for a while, but don't baby it either. Tuning it 200 rpm rich below peak is all that needs to be done. Follow the engine manufacturer's advice above all else.

RE: DL-50 engine
Way back when, I used to do a little bit of engine rebuilding/hot rodding. The engine with the biggest problem for seating rings was the Chevy 454. The procedure that Chevrolet finally recommended was to take the vehicle out (after hitting operating temp) and do 10 full start and stops wide open accelerations to about 70mph or so. Then drive it as you normally would.
I know that is a much different engine than our little two strokes, but if you want to seat a ring fast you need lots of pressure

RE: DL-50 engine
Thanks a bunch for all the replies. I'll pretend I haven't done anything yet and go back and tune the high end to about 200 below max rpm. I like the heat cycle idea, I've done that before with other engines. I'll rev it up good several times and shut it off every 5 minutes or so. I'm sure this may be over-kill but it would help my nerves out a little just knowing that it will idle low and rev quick w/o quitting on me.
Question: What is max operating temps? The max temp I got out of it yesterday was 170 degrees. 200 seems to be a better goal to hit, then shut it off, do it again. ???

RE: DL-50 engine
Thanks guys.
I think the World Models Extra is a nice plane as well.
BUT, with the DL 50 I will go with the Sukhoi, much more suitable I reckon

Hi, this nice blue SV engine is not a DL and is quality is very low, they give lots of problems ,vibration and the mounts break very easely, the price is low like is quality, and is made on Korea.

RE: DL-50 engine
First run on mine - 6500' elevation - 32:1 Lawnboy ashless - 91 octane - 22x8 JFX prop..... 6900 was peak. I toned it down to 6750 to break it in for a while. It spools up really quick. Oh ya, J-tecc wrap around pitts muffler, the normal sized one.
My buddy has a fully broken in DA running the same prop and muffler..... 6500 rpm, he said he was running it rich though, but still, the DL seems to be a great motor so far.
My only complaint (and remember I have less than 16 oz through mine still) is that when I have it rully revved and let off quick, it has died a couple times.
