Mike this you have to see!!!!!

Your new route could be disastrous also....

15' wingspan Gasser Hercules....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O8RAXMzZlY
I finally got some time to watch all these videos. I throw the BS flag on this electric Herc video. This video shows that notoriously crappy plastic ARF out there from http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/190130.asp There have been many posting about this plane having poor flying capabilities and death spirals induced by the flap setup. This had NOTHING to do with the glow verses electric setup. The fire/smoke that resulted after the crash was due to a lipo being pierced or the ESC shorting out after hitting the ground.
It was NOT because the guy decided to install electric motors rather than use glow engines.

It is true that I have less experience with electric when compared to glow. I honestly don't care. This is a poor excuse not to use something. Life is about learning. Someone learns by studying and gaining the required knowledge to better ones self and achieve their desired goals. I think cost is another poor excuse for making a decision. If I am going to do it right, I honestly don't care what the costs are. The costs are relative when measured against reliability and performance. I do things sometimes because I am told I can't. I hate being told I will fail. A recent post brought up my Hawkeye maiden flight crash. This crash made me reflect on building techniques, required checks throughout my future builds, and addressing issues that ARF's and kit's have already addressed. I consider that crash a difficult lesson learned.

I think it's easy to criticize when something goes against your plans, your feelings or your comfort level. I will continue to keep my posting amicable and informative to any future Herc builder, even though every fiber in me wants to tell you guys exactly how I feel. [>:] KEEP ONE THING IN MIND, I am only testing my propulsion plan now. After working with it, I may change my mind. Only time will tell.

Hi everyone. Quick question

I am really curious regarding the weight these birds. I was wondering if people could let me know what the GTW (Gross Take-off Weight) is or what they are expecting it to be?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Sam it is a Toyota Siena 2004. Plane fits perfect with the nose in between the seats the nose at my rigth elbow down on the floor and the stab tips almost 1/4 clearance from the lateral walls. The two tip wings with the fuel tanks and engines on it fits laying on the airfoil top surfave underneath and kind of to the sidaes of the fuselage. Two people to slide it in . Its a breeze. Now i said tha I am going to fly it last week and provide report. Tomorrow is the first day of below 10 mph and a 79 deg, so tomorrow is the day. Frank the Oltimer suppose to be here to watch the event but canceled cause of some personal problem. I will have photos and video plus a report. Initial ground test shows that the 4 of OS 70 with 12-8 props moves the plane to and estimated 30 mph take off speed which is pretty darn good More tomorrow evening Keep your fingers crossed Mike

Good luck with the maiden and thanks for full explanation how nicely and securely/comfortable your 130 fits in van. Now i am very comfortable to bring my 130 home soon as these snow storms go to minimal....we are expecting our first major snow storm starting tomorrow evening with 15cm - 20cm dump with 60km/h winds to end by Friday evening!....

Ok Prop4ever here it is. Got at the field by 10 am and took may be 30 min to get the Herk together. Started the engines and with some practice of a cold run 3 guys hold the plane about 45 deg nose up. Two guys on the wings and one holding the tail down. Engine # 2 stopped. Put the plane down. Make engine reacher. Restart engine #2. Hold the plane up. Good run now but all of a sudden stoppred. Went the other leaning it. Bingo it work. Run the plane several times up in down. Excellent. Ready to make the first attempt to lift the nose up onle and at about 40 to 50 feet of running the nose came up with sligth elevator pressure. I put down and came back to agree with my guys to let it go. As I taxi back towards me I could not steering it cause as it happened the steering cacle let loose at the double eigth joint. So that was that cause I have to have the plane inverted to work underneath the nose. I will make another attempt and will advice. But big planes requires a good number of people to be on hand. Tonigth for dinner I am having a double portion of Advil and may be a drink with it cause at 72 you kinda hurt easy after a day like this. Hope you like the pictures and I am looking into how to show the video of the speed runs. If you know tell me Mike

Hey Mike,

Excellent coverage of the day's high light, take your time as all new planes do get few initial teething problems when about to be released for flying certification.
It's amazing how neatly and comfortably this whole model fits in your van!.
Head-on shot is super also, now looking forward to maiden flight and i can imagine how you must be nervous when it lifted it's nose for the first time!.

So do you feel that 4x 60 2 strokers would be enough also for this model?
I was more thinking on lines of 90sz two cycles for mine....

If you know that you are going to be below 45 lbs total weigth including fuel a 60 2 cycle will do the job as long as the spec indicates a minimum of 0.9 hp torque. Some brand may do some may not. But reliability is not as high with 2 cycles compare to 4. The whole ideea is to select the minimum possible engine that 3 will fly the plane and if 4 th quits the transition is minimum or barely felt by the plane or you. ie. you are not beind taken by a storm or surprise and have time to realize what happen and hit the rudder. The "rigth small" size engine is advisable, yes a OS 70 4 cycles is on the upper side and the OS 52 is on lower. Not much choice. Yes a 61 2 cycle will be perfect from the power point of view but get the opnes that are most reliable. Your choice. Have a B25 with 2 61 on it plane by Wing mfgr flies great and the two engines sings to each other with the help of a JR match box. Boy they sound like two Rolls Royces Mike

Mike...that sounds like a fantastic AND successful day at the field.

Got done just what needed to be done. Got some run time, got some bugs worked out, made some good rollin taxi runs, and found one big kink to be fixed before flight. I would say they dont get to much more successful than that unless ya fly a lap

Very pleased to hear things went so well.

On posting a video...

Goto "Youtube" or "Vimeo" website. Establish your account there and follow directions to upload video to that website. When done, post link here using "hyperlink" option or just "cut and paste" the video link in your post.
