Let's say what have I done now that ski season has started. I'm an Assistant Patrol Director on the weekends and a desk jockey during e week, so my time is short during the winter anyway.

Progress - The fuze is cut, the wings are cut and folded, but not yet glued. Spars are built. I have firewall meterial; 3/8 ply - one layer inside the fuze and one outside; to be joined with epoxy, so the forward sheet bears on the end of the fuze's perimeter.

I have all materials here. I just need the time finish cutting and to start gluing. I'm off work until the 2nd, so I should have time. Kids, MIL in hospital, Skiing, etc., al consipre against me. <grin>

Oh, I also have a 4*40 resurrection that is almost ready to cover. . . . .

With the ground covered by snow, we're not flying until I build skis anyway, but we should be melted out in another week or so. I better get my buns in gear.

well the coro sair flew! it was a very tricky plane. it needs alot of tweeking and or maybe a new wing. I think there is too much Vee to it. the dihedral really takes over. the rates need to be turned down alot more also. it sure would roll and loop

Before You change a lot of stuff , try putting a little up reflex in the ailerons.
Reflex has tamed a lot of twitchy Spads, and is the easiest thing to try first.

Nice job on your Corsair. Mine is a real handful on high rates. Set the elevator travel so it won't snap with full up and make sure the ailerons don't droop in neutral (check them against a straight edge across the bottom of the wing). An aft cg makes them ugly too, I had to put the throttle servo in front of the firewall and the battery under the tank to get the cg on the spar. The pics show how my maiden went.

Almost every weekend, but it's only 45 minutes. My wife and I telemark and the kids ski, although there is some talk of trying a board by my son.

I didn't make New Years for the completion of the Deb. 8^( but we had a blast skiing a lot. 8^)

I need more evening build time, but I'm usually in the gym by 5:15 AM, so 10:30 PM is as late as it gets.

Later,

Jack

man that telemark looks brutal on the knees. all I can say is if your son tries a board, I hope he gets a lesson first. its all fun! I had to make a new wing for the corsair, I hope to try it tomorow.

Telemark is hard on the thighs, not the knees.

He will get lessons. I'm an Assistant Patrol Director; he's a patrol brat with lots of patroller "buddies" who would love to teach him. I told him that he could try a board when he could carve beautiful turns in both directions, in any conditions. He can and he can already ski my butt off too. I'm a Senior level patroller and he's only 13. Then again, I passed my Dad at about the same age. <Grin>

Good luck with the new wing. I may get to start assembling my Deb wing tonight. We're home and don't leave for the mountain until 6:30 AM <grin>. My Coro/CA strength test earlier today, went beautifully. The only way to seperate the two coro test pieces was to rip it apart; the joints did not let go.

Later,

Jack

Hey Gary, Thanks. is that your plane and build instructions that I see on the net, "Gary's Corsair" ? I came up with a way to make an all coro fuse. it works really well. I need to beef up the wing joints, a little hard landing and I snap a wing panel. it is a very wild plane and higher rates will send it flying crazy. Mine would only roll in one direction, engine tork and it wouldnt roll at all in the other, is that a common thing with that wing shape? Im gona put in on the shelf for a while. Im doing a SSC texan right now, SSC combat class. since I got the round fuse thing figured out. Im on a mission to build round fuse planes hehehe

That'd be me. A wing is only as strong as its spar and I had problems initially too. The plane in the pic was repaired several times and the wing failed during a loop. Believe it or not it spun down and landed on it's wheels. Now the spar joints are epoxied between 3/32" doublers of 5 layer plywood. Not sure why your design only rolls one way, make sure everything is straight and add more right thrust. These little WWII fighters are pretty addictive, careful or you'll want to own one of each! The Corsair is still my favorite... I always have half a dozen RTF.

Wow the famous Gary! thanks. Yes it is fun to fly. I have done a bunch of corostangs and use them in open B combat. Im a Spad guy. I must have something off on my plane for it not to roll right. I think plane two is about ready to be built. I am doing the AT-6 now. I have a thread on that going also. I got the full coro round fuse figured out and im going nuts with ideas on other round fuse planes, I will beef up the joints on the wings. thanks again

thats about how my first wing was, I had to flatten it out some. give it a shot, it might do real well.

I found it interesting to read that the reason the Corsair had the Gull wings was to give the 10 foot diameter prop more ground clearance without increasing the length of the main gear. That size prop sounded huge to me until a few days ago when I read that the B-36 had 19 foot diameter props. That is huge! That size prop surely must have had a gear reducer to the piston engine. Anyone know? Hope this is not too far off subject.

yeap Villa, thats right about the gull wings. the corsair didnt have gear reduction. I built a plastic model of the b36 and the props mounted on the shaft. so there probably wasnt any gear redution there either. just big powerful engines. plus they could adjust the prop pitch. that b-36 was amaizing!

Hi draftman1
I was only guessing on the B-36 props requiring a gear reduction drive. I know that the prop tip speed needs to be kept below the sound barrier. I also believe that most large aircraft radial engines run at about the same speed; as fast as possible, yet equal reliability. These engines have 28 cylinders. The difference in tip speed between a 10 foot prop and a 19 foot prop is tremendous, if the engine speed is similar and no reduction is used. So I just Googled the B-36 and found this:
http://www.vectorsite.net/avb36.html

It used a 1:2 gear reduction. So the prop tip speed was similar to that of the Corsair even though the prop was going at half the RPM.

Oh wow, thats cool. Im a dummy when it comes to prop speed and tip speed and all that. There is a B36 about a 2 hour drive form here at an airplane museum. It is awesome and a very huge plane. the tires are so tall. very impresive plane.
