I had a Liddle Stik for some time back in the 70,s it had a K&B 40 series 69 modified to have front and rear carbs as per Hal Debolt article in American Modeler(I think). Throttled really great and went like the proverbial, I flew it in Sport Pylon and used it as pattern practice model. Finally sold it with a Webra 40 in it. The K&B died in another sport pylon model needs new case and cylinder. Should talk to RJL.
I still have a Mini Stik from RCM plans has had Enya15 and Rossi 15. It is about 25+ years old and needs a bit of TLC, reading this has sparked some interest, I have a Veco 19 and a couple of OS10 maybe I should try them, also have an old Taipan 1/4 midget 15 somewhere I think.
I also should have the Grid Leaks with the Ugly Stik article I think there is also a copy of the Grid Leaks with Kraft 's original Kwik Fly, which was a fairly large model for the 45's of the day.

My name is Peter Lilliegren and I am a truly ugly stick lover , in fact, I learned to fly with one , it was a reduced copy of the original plan, to make a 40 version , which flew almost by itself.
I have built several "ugly stick like" models, specially electric versions and even an autogyro version
but I would love to have a copy of the original plans once again , can you help me out? , I think yuo said you had a PDF file. can you send it to me?

I learned to fly R/C in 1964 along side Dave Mathewson and the others in the Syracuse, NY club called the ARCS, Aero Radio Club of Syracuse. Bob Throne taught me on my DeBolt Trainer. Ed Izzo was also in our club and was designing the Sabre Hawk and Javelin at the time.

In 1967 I bought my first proportional system, a used Bonner Digimite 4. That went into a Debolt Super Cub along with an Enya .15 Diesel which I still have. (The Enya that is). I flew it on 3 channels and later changed to a ST .23.

In 1969 I was stationed at Pt. Mugu, Ca. in the Navy and there was another guy in our avionics shop that built an Ugly Stick but never flew R/C. He built a Heathkit radio as well. He asked me to test fly it so outside of our shop, I flew it. I didn't tell him it was the first aileron equipped plane I ever flew but I had no problems with it. It flew with no trim required. Great fun those Ugly Sticks.

Now I'm going to build one with the workings from the Cessna Centurion I had. This will be about a 12" wing span. I'll try to post a photo when done.

I really like the orginal stick, I was down in Perry, GA about 4 years ago and a guy was selling copys of phil Krafts original stick w/plans, the kit was in a large clear plastic bag no box I purchased one, a lot better kit than the original and the plans where perfect. I can't remember what I paid for it, around $80.00 or a liitle less. I'll build it one day could not afford one back then I 16 years old!!!!

I found a set of plans on line for the Das Ugly stik and decided to laser cut it to the original design. I made a couple improvements, such as 1/16 ply doubler inside the fuse to allow wing bolts, included servo boxes in the wings for ailerons, beefed up wing with hardwood spars and stringers, no dihedral, but you can add it if you want. I precut the ailerons and elevator with the scalloped edges. I'll offer the short kit for $70.00 plus $10.00 S&H the kit includes building plans for the wing, tail and fuse. All the hard work is done just put it together.

RC Modeler Magazine http://www.rcmmagazine.com/e/env/ind...nk=/index.html is still in operation and has a 60" version of the Das Ugly Stik (Plan pl-969) by Phil Kraft, date 5/85 for about $20. These may not be the original Phil Kraft plans but they do make a nice model.

Hello,

I still have one (1) "Jensen" Ugly Stick Kit that I have had from the Late 1960s. I lived in Southern California and I BUILT 18 Ugly Sticks from the Jensen Bulk Kits for Phill Kraft. He used them as Test Beds for Repaired Kraft Radios. A fellow modeler also built 18. We built them and sanded them, someone else covered them with silk and dope. Phill would put one in the air powered by a K&B 61, Trim it and then colapse the antena on his Kraft test radio. ( 72.xx mHz AM, on one of our newly assigned 11 frequencies) If the radio did it's thing the model may fly again with another repaired Transmitter/ Receiver combination. If Not, grab another Stick !

I have just started Building a Das Ugly Stick from the Jensen Plan 60 inch Wing span

Which of the following would be the best Engine for it (I don't want to rip the wings off it but I want a bit of speed)

I have the following all in good to like new condition :

OS 40 Max H (twin ball race)
OS 45 FSR
MERCO 61 MK 2 (single glow plug)
Enya 60 III
OS 60 FGR Gold Head with Perry Pump and Carb
OS 61 FSR (Ringed Version)
OS FS-90 ( First Model with Rear push rods)

I have listed them in order of (I hope power output)

I would like to see a 70+ four stroke on your list.

I know an OS .40H and FSR will fly the plane because that is what I learned on in the late 70s. You will like it better with a .60 FSR or like; the forties make it fly "scale". I still have both of my engines and most of the airframe from then, and plan a restoration; I do have another with an Enya .60III and Kraft radio that I still fly from time to time. My favorite was my old instructors plane that has a Blue Head Super Tiger on it; compared to my OS 40s it was a rocket.

Thanks for the input everyone,

After alot of thought I have decided to make Das Ugly stick to take both 40 amd 60 Size engines, that way it will be easy to up Size it to a 60 !!!

By drilling the fire wall for both types of engines to start with it won't look messy when I put a 60 on later, I have seen other modelers make a mess of a nice of a plane by ugrading the engine once the plane has been built.

Have fun with this build. Check out www.lasershortkits.com there is a nice version of the original Kraft, Jensen kit there. It is a pretty complete kit, scallopped ailerons and elevator. Fuse sides, etc.

I wonder if anybody who has flown one of the original Kraft versions has flown a recent Ultra Stick and can compare the two.
