here is something new : finally got a good day to fly my C 130 Coast Guard scheme some of you had seen it pictured above. Frank the Oltimer made the trip from Sarassota with two friends to see the event. My 4 cycles OS 70 lifted up that plane in less than 50 feet of run. Needed a bunch of down trim and leveled it was flying like a beautifull white bird. Just GREAT. Landing was very good although that down trim eat some of my up elevator and could not make the landing low and long . But nice landing. Something else to mention : it is little more difficult to make rigth turn may be because of the torq effect. lso I belive that Palmer numbers of stab 2 deg neg, wing 5 deg pos and zeo thrust on engines adds up correctly even if you move the cg between 28 - 30 % . His 4.62 in as per the plan altough approaches 30 % is still conservative. I will fly it next Monday at 32 %. If you have any comments or questions you are welcome. Mike

I witnessed Mike's first flight and he did a masterful job of flying. His aircraft is beautiful and handled well after a very long wait to get the right weather conditions. We have had a tremendous amount of wind this year. Mike had his engines singing like racing engines and they performed flawlessly! This airplane weighs in a about 38 pounds with fuel and it rolled about 50 feet or so and rose into the air at approximately a 30 degree angle. The flight was uneventful until the landing where Mike did not want to use the flaps as he had not established exactly how much elevator would be required. This make the landing a little exciting as the plane came in very fast and Mike said later that it was dropping like a rock. He said that it took full up elevator to flare and it did come down rather hard but not too hard as it stuck and rolled to a perfect stop. Mike is to be congratulated for his flying skill and successful maiden flight.

I planned to take video of the flight but dumb me wore polorized sun glasses and after the plane left the ground I couldn't see anything in the camera lens.

Do you guys have any landing pictures, those would be great to see also. I was thinking on the lines of engines that Mike chose for his Hercules,being OSFS 70s wouldn't them be = to OS50 2 strokes if i'm not mistaking and if this is the case then why is there a need for 90 2 stoke engines on these models, wouldn't that be too much power for these models specially if one of them out boards flame out in flight!...

My best guess is that no one knew it would fly with 50 size two strokes. If you recall Palmer originally designed this aircraft around 49 MVVS engines of a two stroke nature. Mike is using OSFS 70's and 90 are probably overkill in hind sight! Mike might have some landing pictures he will share.

Ok, if I might have a little input here (very little)

IIRC in the last 50 pages, the 90's being spoken of are 4 strokes, not 2 strokes. And they are the "geared" 90 version at that, which basically means a VERY large, slow turning prop, to achieve some scale proportion.

On whether "these" engines would be overkill or not......the C130 is capable of an unlimited verticle climb once a decent airspeed is achieved on takeoff (quoted from an original "test pilot" I used to race with) SO it stands to reason that if your 50 2 strokes will send her straight up, then that would be a scale platform

Seems to me (just guessing here) that this will be close to being achieved with geared 90's spinning huge props.

Don't be afraid to use those flaps. From the initial reports, it sound like your Herc is a great flier. Roll out the flaps and throttle up, I think you will be surprised how docile the landings become.

I would love to see a flight video soon.

Got a flight yesteray Feb 25. Winds die down later on the day at measured 8-10 and gusts to 12. Major problem was the rotating direction of the wind so that I can lock on the correct landing vector. Fligth was flawles and lasted until my transmitter bell hit the 8 min flight time. Here is attached the Herk picture coming in with 20 plus deg flaps and a much more acceptable decent path and speed. It is indeed worth all the work, money and perspiration. As it is in life, nothing comes free. Tommorow I will have my 7 th in 6 years bladder cancer surgery. I can close my eyes anytime now and imagine this beautifull Herk flying across the blue skies. Finish yours, you will be very happy My best to all Mike

Sorry, sorry and sorry again. Four postings finally got my attention and strenght to answer. I am no better than 3 weeks ago, not because of B C but because of post surgery infections. Yes with S at the end because I run into a chain of bacterias, one more stronger than the other. Sitting at the computer its a job by itself. This is all I am going to say. But I am convinced that I can.......are you ready ? ....... my second C 130 and finish it the gunship model with all the guns and their glories. How beautifull will that be to make a low pass and seeing them hanging over their windows. But as a service to you, you may take the following suggestions as you work on your plane.
1The elevator 2 deg negative is wrong. It should be zero. My plane needed 3/8 down elevator to fly leveled and then will land steep when power / speed / lift was reduced. I had to mix throtle with elevator so that at max T I would have the 3/8 down and at idle I was back in neutral. My 106 in Check molded C 130 has also a zero elevator. If you move your elevator to 3/8 down and unite the LE with TE you have the zero. This is the where Mister Herk is comfortable. That is a big mistake in the design.

Nice to hear from you!!!! A positive attitude is the BEST medicine!! Once I finish one herk I would like to have a second herk of the Fat Albert variety. I think that is the derangement for even thinking about four engine RC's !!! lol!!!

We've started cleaning the garage out and getting the new shop in order. I hope to get back to building sometime this spring. With everyones posts and help I'm going to try and make some big ground gainers on all of you and get this bird together. Till next time laddies!!

Great to hear back from you, honestly i had been thinking about you lately and i was going to send ya a PM to see how you were doing. I haven't been following on here much lately as i have been dealing with my father's medical issues also and whatever time i get during a day i hang out in Jets section with regards to my Avro Arrow restoration. Hey i'll second that positive attitude is the key of goodness, you will come through the difficulties if you looked up and kept thinking positively my friend. There is so much pain he can give us, as he knows how much we can tolerate....

Now i know once i get my C 130 i have major surgery to do if it's stab is mounted on negative incidence as on plans, , ,well great to hear from ya and hope to see you flying your Herky bird real soon...

I want to thank UkerDuker for starting this thread, and all the others who contributed their info and pictures for building this Palmer 132" C-130. I started building mine about four weeks ago and have read every post here, plus downloading most of the construction pictures. So far I have not run into any major problems because you guys informed me about them before they came about. My version is the LC-130 with skis and wheels, along with the Arctic paint scheme.

It wouldn't make much sense for me to start posting pictures at this time (many good pictures of the construction are already here). I'll post some pictures when it nears completion.

The only modification I made so far was that I built the windshield mullions out of plastic 3/32" angles instead of balsa wood as called for on the plans. The skis are made out of solid basa blocks. Also, I will be powering it with four AXI 5330/18 electric motors and 13" four bladed props.
