I think as far as four stroke "sound" goes possibly a Y.S. 160 or 170 might sound mighty tasty And may even fit completely within the cowl also... I have both a Saito 220 and Moki 2.10 on hand however and its still a toss up which way I will end up going with our PC-21.

got my landing lights working today w/wires& battery i mesured 2.30z. I ended up stealing high rez led's from a headlamp made by blackdimond in S.L.C.
BTW: thanx rrgriffin - I didnt know if the moki's where worth investing in. if it wasnt such a beautiful bird id have her in the air already - im still on the fence with glow
but for the price of a moki you could have money leftover fore a palet of nitro. its to bad the little os 91 ducted fan motor wouldnt work with a 3 to 5 blade prop -its 4.8 hp under 30oz looks very nice on paper but no warrenty ???? 22,000 rpm they must seft destruct [X(] if improperly used, and only Kawasaki motor corps has the technolagy
to run 2strokes at that rpm . the bottom line is reliabilty and power. a dead stick with this bird could be fatal. []

Well if you want reliability, again the Mokis are exceptional.

I hand start mine easily in one or two flicks, only ever had one deadstick and the glow plug had died.
I run mine using the OS F four stroke plug, using 10% nitro and coolpower oil.
They really are exceptional engines.

Does anyone know if the scale spinner is available?

DO NOT go by the recomended 1.20 engine in the manule - 1.25 is a GREAT motor but it bearly pulls my 120 aeroworks yak around @ 9.75#. the pc 21's wing loading alone requieres
speed to keep her in the air. if she wing tip stalls, the ground will most surely come up and steal your plane!!! KMP says the 180 saito is a great match - i would start there.
if your above 4000' or more you might need more power depending on your skill level and what you expect from the plane.

Id contack KMP about that spinner - beleave thats one of there props on the pic, but I dont know what sninner that is. A polished aluminum would look trick
but the one I have is a true turn - it looks wrong ( too short ) so im still looking for a longer spinner. let me know what you find....

[X(] What size is that 4-blade set up for??? small electric??

Also.... IMHO, I would go for the 40cc gas ZDZ40... It fits in very tight spaces (rear carb and muffler) and starts and runs sooo nice.

I like nitro as much as the next guy, but you just can't beat having a plane that can handle a gas engine.
The reliability is supurb... the headaches are deminished, and it is for the most part. Gas can, plane receiver,.... Flip and Fly...

Obviously, in smaller planes you have to have nitro, but I would use nothing less than a 40cc in this one ghost.fr
Prices have gone up quite a bit with those japan motors... 100$ separates a 180saito and a zdz40... Plus RCshowcase has a 10% off sale...to boot.
A size comp. between a OS 120AX and the 40cc

Hi There guys,

Are there anybody flying the PC-21 with an electric setup?
Please post photo's and specs.
A video will also be very nice.

I am contemplating making this my first large scale electic!
it will be about twice the pricefor motor speedcontroller and batteries but still less than half the price of a turboprop turbine so i think it is a good compromise between scale sound and price!

I am looking at mine in the shop now. I have a Saito 1.80 that I could use or I have been considering the FG-36 gas 4 stroke from Saito. Either should fly the PC-21 well.

Would a DL 50 fit in this plane, I need alot of power, hot and high in Alice Springs. Just wonder if I would have to cut to much cowling off. Ive already got this engine so I would prefer to use it.If possible. Not sold on the four strike idea sounds wrong, and planes on vids although beautiful look a little slow. So extra pwr would be good, if at all possible.

Cheers

I've been wondering about the DA 50 too? How would it fit?

In December, my wife told me "no more planes for six months". Clearly she hadn't thought about that statement much before she said it, but before she could restate her demands, I quickly agreed that "I would try to make that work" [sm=lol.gif]and I've been thinking about this KMP Pilatus every day since. I am interested in the gasser option, so I'd like to know more about what people have come up with.

I've gone back and read the entire thread. Based on the dimensions posted, The DA/DL-50 looks too big for this plane, even with mucho cowl trimming and possible firewall mods. If someone knows differently, I'd love to hear more. It seems a real shame to have to trim the cowl on this plane any more than had to be done for the Saito 1.80 which seems to be a fair fit. It would be better to not have to do any trimming at all. I just ask because I'd like to know the out limits for this arf.

I live not far from SeanRegan and he is right to "overpower" his planes where he lives if it suits his flying style. What seems like too much power to people near sea level, seems somehow less impressive at 5000 ft. It's hard to appreciate unless you live at higher altitudes, even if you fly electrics. I just got back from a multi-club event in Denver. Now those guys "power up" their planes. The guys from Colorado Springs and Pueblo Colorado had some serious iron on their planes.

If you want to go down the gas route then the ZDZ40 is probably one of the smallest gassers, without going to OTT. The problem with gas engines is the size of the silencer, it has to have a decent volume so the exhaust is not restricted. I have an OS200 in mine, once run in it will have a good turn of speed, another idea would be the Saito FG36?

I am starting to round up parts for this plane. Power 160, 5 blade prop but I would really like to see some kit pictures. Everyone has them done but I would like to see inside the plane. Around the retract areas. Tail mount firewall area hatch area.

I've been doing some reading on the ZDZ40. Maybe still a bit big but I could get over that as long as any cowl cutting is only on the bottom of the cowl ... it's the price that is hard to get over[sm=confused_smile.gif].

I also , like rcavi8tor, would like to see more fuselage/firewall/cowl/gear/construction/etc... shots if anyone has taken any and has just not posted them yet.

Has anyone ever done any of KMP's unpainted planes? I expect that they are pretty good, and don't require heaps of prep work. I think the prepainted scheme is really nice, but am somewhat interested some other color schemes.

Hey Rhus.... Yes the Engine-cowl issue is a crunundrum at this altitude. Iv been looking at KMP's new line of Aerovate gassers (45cc) , but no ones flown one yet , and I dont know of any pipe options. Also look at NEU MOTORS from Castle creation. he'll make you a custom ele motor for this bird and most are saying these motors are top notch.!
ON the DL 50cc My buddy down the street has one and we'v held it up to the fire wall ( the back plate or riser mounts would stick out the top of the cowl) so im thinking the DA 50
would do the same[] most pro ele pilots are endorsing a 53 sieries AXI fkor the rpms / 125A castle esc / 12s 44.4v / 4200ahm / BEC and redundant rx batteries.
The zdz40 with the rear mount can rides on the firewall ( might melt cowl but w/ less cutting). That brings us to MOKI. a 2.10 is lighter that the 1.80 same motor bored-out.
they say its 4.95hp but at 7000'+ it will run at around 4.35hp - thats the kind of power you'll need to use the sky and not just an oval area infront of you. Hope this helps [8D]
cheers.....

This plane really turns me on, but I only have access to grass.....wonder if it would work on grass. Also has anyone thought about using the Lado retracts? Thanks WC

Here is a video of it flying off grass. In fact it was from a link on this RCU that I saw it. Draw your own conclusions from the video.

Look at this vid [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNaQrgdoh5o]on YouTube.[/link][sm=what_smile.gif]

It was found on this [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8116694/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]RCU Thread[/link]
