That's a great looking 1/8 scale model. Is it going to have a fabric type cover over the front ribs? It transparent type model covering would be great because it would show the frames. It's a shame to cover up that beautiful handiwork.

Had an opportunity to get in some really good runs with the "Kneeler" today. One of our boat club members ran the boat will I took photos. The hull really carves into a right turn. However, left turn adjustments need to be made delicately. The boat floats down the straightaways with the sponsons touching side to side. As the photos show, it's definitely riding on a cushion of air. If a couple of guys can get their "Kneelers" done this next week we might actually have a race next Sunday.

wow that look's great ..come on stick a scale amps on that ...heheheh

I used to practice and test in the late 70's and early 80's with A and B Stock Merc motors (my teen years), but never fully raced in my "hand-me-down" Sid-Craft my brother gave me.

My oldest brother, who started racing as a teen in the mid-60's in APBA with KG4's, KG7's, 25SS, 20H's (my favorite) and American Hot Rods (Champions), all nationally.

I used to travel with him during summer months off school. His boat number was 19-H out of Hobart Indiana. Unfortunately, he was involved in a highway accident in the early 80's and I was never able to pick up where he left off with his gear as I was still young in the workforce with not much cash...lol, so I hung on to my Sid as long as I could but never could scrape up enough equipment or time to go fully racing. My hull now hangs in a boat museum in northern Wisconsin.

We were involved with a very tight group of developers in the sport of outboard racing and was sad to see him go, as he used to test for many people and earned many trophies including a kilo record. Family friends of ours include Tom Moulder (former owner of Hot Rod after Champion), Gerry Gravison (US-1 Utility for a few years) and Stover Hire who traded US-1 plates in several classes back and forth with Ron Hedlund for almost ten years straight.

Below is our rig as we stopped on our way out to Seattle for the nationals one year in the early 70's. Second pic is Stover in front, 3rd pic is Ron Hedlund on the right. Last pic is a Hedlund and a Sid together (D Stock).

I still travel to Upper Michigan every other year for a week of camping and hang out at the nationals, and this year probably going to catch an Unlimited race on the Ohio river if I get time away.

It is great that you posted pics of your father's efforts, I am glad to see the bones once again of a Sid-Craft! Nice job! Thank You. [sm=thumbup.gif]

Jerry, have you given a thought about making your kneeler an inboard just to see how it goes, or do you want to keep things as an outboard with it?

The "Kneeler" as designed would not make a good inboard. I want to try to promote racing this boat in my area.

I have not yet had an opportunity to run the "Kneeler" against the radar gun. I'm hoping to be able to do that next week when "Beaver Boy" AKA, Chris Guppy returns from Hawaii. Chris is my radar operator. It looks like it's running in the 35/37 mph range.

Raced the Builder's Challenge "Kneeler" against three other "Kneelers" today. This is the first time model kneel down hydroplanes have ever raced against each other. I also built the other three boats. All boats were powered by O.S. 21. I won the first round. Unfortunately, the receiver pack died during the second round and the boat hit a large stick along the bank tearing off the engine. I glued the transom back on, but had too much negative prop thrust in round three and DNFed that one. Over corrected for round four and couldn't run over 1/2 throttle for fear of blowing the boat off. But, I did manage a second place finish. Ended up third overall. Jim Hagan, of Seattle, won finishing all four rounds with my red hull. Second was Wayne Stilson of Lakewood. The first photo was taken in round one and that's my boat leading Jim's boat. The second photo is my boat about to pass Dustin Wicks. Third photo shows Jim Hagn making a pass inside of Wayne Stilson. In the last photo, Wayne leads Dustin out of the right turn.

Here's the final look for my Builder's Challenge Project. The new paint job must have improved my racing luck because I won the "Kneeler" class at our District 8 race today.

The water looks good in those, I bet it was a great day at the pond. That one head on shot shows a nice balanced hull, no bounce and riding sweet on the rails. Congrats on the checkers!

Plans for the "Kneeler" will be published in an upcoming issue of RC Boat Modeler. Not sure which issue, but definitely not the next one.

Jerry, have plans for the kneeler been published yet, or are they available directly from you. Please let me know, and a price as well. Thanks, Mike [email protected]

Nice, I just sent my payment for a subscription to RC Boat Modeler. As soon as I finish my 42" tunnel hull build, that will be the next boat I want to do. There is just something about the look of it!

Hi:

ORIGINAL: Jerry Dunlap
Well, I finally got started on a project for the Challenge. I'm working on a JD WOF 1/4 Scale "Kneeler." I began the project on March 19 and have been using Great Planes Pro Foam Safe Medium CA. You can build things really fast with this stuff. I'm ready to join the sponsons to the center section. But, that will need to wait till I return from the World Outboard Championships in Charleston, SC.
JD
I am following the construction of this boat... really awesome.
Do you have plans?. I would like to have a copy of them... if you can

Sorry to re-open an old thread but the 1/8th scale my father built is all finished up. He sent it to a close friend of ours who did the finishing touches. Here are the photos.

Hope you enjoy them.

Nice work! I'm glad you updated the thread. I was curious how it was going to turn out, and what colors your father was going to choose.

Look in this picture and you'll see the Sid-Craft I used to have. I believe it is the same A/B size that your's is. They have become true treasures, along with the "cornpopper" Mk 20H that's on the back.

I just recieved templates from a buddy that I'm considering making into a 36" inboard. It is an old Hal Kelly transom-rider design called "Ben Hur" and it is one of the few cabovers that were designed. Makes it a good rough water boat. Check out the cup thats designed into the bottom.

Thats cool jet. Anyways the boat was painted by its owner now. You might know him since he use to race the boat it is modeled after. I know all about Hal Kelly's plans. I actually have a Jupiter that I have been restoring. One of these days I will finish it.
