bdbruce-
That's last flight sounds catastrophic, but with the repairs you've outlined, I think you should be in good shape to get her back in the air again. I haven't had that bad of a crash with my P-38, but I've helped a buddy who crashed his into quite a few pieces. Instead of carbon fiber rods, we used shish kabob skewers for reinforcement and paid attention to incidence angles, etc. Once she was back together and taxi tested etc, she flew better then when she came out of the box! I think we were more confident as well, knowing all the reinforcement work we had done, etc. maybe that's something us ARF folks don't usually get to experience- that thorough a confidence in a scratch built ship. Good luck and let us know when she's airborn again.- Stalkmoe

I am thinking of buying the P-38. Is there any updates that I should know about first? What has been the best motor/speed control/battery combination?

RE: E-Flite P-38/F-5E Lightning 400 ARF
Hello,
I recently purchased the E-Flite P-38. I was wondering if anyone knows of 3-bladed props/spinners that could be used on this model? I looked at GWS, and they offer standard, and counter rotating 8 x 5 x 3 props... Would they work adequately?

I love this plane. It flies great. Lots of power, stable and lands nice and easy. With a good 2200 25c battery... unlimited vertical... awesome!

HobbyKing is the place to find all that you require...
Master Airscrew 3 blade props. The "pusher" style are the counter rotation ones you require, I use these on the P-38 Nitro Electric that Ifly:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idCategory=271
Spinners are a bit of a hit and miss from them, all you can do is comb through the entire spinner section or search for Spinner & 3-blade to (for eg) to find what you need, make sure you know your cowl opening diameter and the motor shaft diameter. I have seen 3 -slot spinners, but I was not really looking for them at the time. The spinner section is as follows..

Also if you can't find what you are looking for, try the online help. They are pretty good at helping you find what you need.

If you still need that canopy, take a look at Ebay, I am not sure if this is for this version of the P-38.

RE: E-Flite P-38/F-5E Lightning 400 ARF
Maiden flight was wonderfully executed this weekend.
AR6110 Receiver
Zipply LiPo 2200 25C
2 x TG 40A Plush ESC (larger than I want, will switch to 25A ESCs)
2 x TG 2213 22 Turn 924KV, 17A Outrunner
5 x HXT900 servos (rudders included)
Initial flight indicated too much nose weight. Iusually fly new models nose heavy as Ifind a tail heavy bird can result in less than optimal landings on an initial flight. Raking grass to recover parts is not my idea of fun.
Like my larger Nitro Planes P38, this one flies hot and straight. Iwas really impressed by the flight characteristics. After pulling out some of the nose weight, the second flight went even better.
My landing was compromised by the starboard landing gear folding a bit inside the nacel and that allowed the rudder to touch the ground and snap off. 5Minute epoxy an we were ready to go again.
However, the landing gear is another issue. I used a couple of drops of epoxy to hold both rear gear assmblies in place, but that solution is far from optimal. If i ever had to remove the gear, it could result in a real hack job.. Any ideas to resolve the "softness". Imust fly with gear as my "grass" is really low and the ground would tear up the belly & the drop tanks.

RE: E-Flite P-38/F-5E Lightning 400 ARF
I pulled my landing gear out and made a piece of ply for support and epoxied back in and now it is good. it is now stronger than the wire. Landing this plane has been a challenge, but the flight is worth it. I also reinforced the booms with a 3/16 dowel rod about 4 inches long and epoxied it in to. My booms kept breaking even on just a hard landing. Now it has'nt broken in abot 20 flights and landings

Thanks, the plywood sounds like a good idea. Ithink Iagree with the boom issue. Iwill probably use some carbon fibre rods to provide strength for the booms. Even though Ihave become pretty capable of landing these P38s, you never know when bad things can happen. Better safe than sorry.
I really like the flying characteristics of these models. As Iget further along with flying, Isee these as my primary flying buddies.

I love to fly mine. It flies almost scale like. I think I have the only one in Northern California. The problem is finding parts. Not that I need anything right now but it would be nice to have extra wings and fusalge or props and spinners..

RE: E-Flite P-38/F-5E Lightning 400 ARF
Yes, I know what you mean about the pain of finding parts...... So far either I have had to fabricate parts for all of my other models except for my Cessna 172 Skyline ARF I got from HobbyKing. Amazingly they had some replacement parts that the online help guys found for me in someones desk drawer.
I suspect if you contact E-Flite directly, they might be able to help you out... The problem with this kind of foam is the way it disintegrates when it is whacked and dragged... That makes it hard to "fill"....
I have taken to using the pink home depot insulating foam & screen door plastic mesh and epoxy to repair foamies. Works great and keeps the weight down. I can even sand it if I use a fine enough sandpaper and go slowly....

I cannot get E Flight directly. You get redirected to Horizon and they don't have much to choose from. Nothing that we need. did you find a canopy? It would sure be nice to be able to buy one.

Moose,
I crashed my P38 about a month ago. I have know idea what happened, I think it was a problem with the bec. I did something wrong cutting one of the leads on the esc's. I lost power and control at the same time and she just spiraled in. If you need any parts that might be still good let me know and we can work something out. Email me at [email protected]. Thanks
