Short answer is baking the engine in the oven at 250 for 10 minutes. The case is aluminum, so it will expand more than the steel bearing and it will slide right out.

The short non-video version:
heat the empty case in a 250* ~ 300* oven (I have a $2 tag sale toaster oven for just this purpose) for 5~10 minutes. Take the case out with a good thick potholder and smack the rear down on a piece of soft pine or the like. The rear bearing will fall right out....

You DO NOT want to push the bearings in or out of a cold case, this will cause problems later on.
Like these guys said, heat the case and it will release the bearings. When the case cools it will shrink back to normal size.

Just so no-one will ever forget, you must first remove the crankshaft from the engine, *BEFORE* heating the crankcase (with the bearings inside)...
If you don't, you might find it very difficult to remove the rear bearing from the crankshaft afterward...[:@]

...I use a bearing separator and a puller to remove the bearing from the crankshaft.

I would too. I never wrote it was impossible; just that it is difficult...
And in any case, even if you found the rear bearing to be in good shape (i.e. not in immediate need of replacement), the bearing separator will push against the outer race and this will Brinell both races...
You'll then need to replace this bearing, if it's removed...

Does anyone know of a decent, inexpensive separator? Most I've seen come in sets and cost over $100.
BTW, if the bearing does come off on the crank, you can try again by putting them in the freezer while you reheat the case. Then, reinstall the crank and bearing and let it cool completely. Then reheat and try it again.

I would phrase it a bit differently... What you had described may again result with the bearing still on the crankshaft...
...if the bearing does come off on the crankshaft, you can try again by putting them in the freezer while you reheat the crankcase. Then, reinstall the crankshaft and bearing, in the crankcase and let it cool completely. Then remove the crankshaft, with the assembly at room temperature, or colder, by simply pushing it back. The bearing is a much tighter fit inside the cold aluminium crankcase; then it is on the similar metal, steel crankshaft. Then reheat the crankcase with the rear bearing inside, remove it from the oven with a hot-glove and slap it on its back against a wooden block. The rear bearing will fall out; alone this time, as there is now no crankshaft it can come out on...

How does one remove the metal shield from a bearing? I got replacements for the 46AX and the front bearing came with shields on both sides, while the stock bearing had a shield only on one side. I assume the bearing will be better lubricated if the inside is left open.
Thanks.
Thanks.

RE: OS 46ax rear engine bearing
i used a heat gun a bearing separator and a 2 jaw puller all purchased at Harbor Freight Tools to get my prop hub and shaft off*today as a matter of fact), the rear was the hardest...... i heated the empty crank case with a heat gun for a few minutes i then grabbed it with a welders glove, and gave it a couple of firm taps on a wooden block and it popped out.....
this was on an old 61 fsr abc, my first bearing job should be much easier on the AX line, no prop hub to worry about

I pop them out with a pin or knife blade. They are very thin and soft, easy to pry off.

As for removing the rear bearing, 250 degrees for 15 minutes in the oven and a firm tap on a wooden cutting board and mine popped right out, rusty as it was.
