RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
HI, I have modified a set of air retracts for my falcon using a HS-225MG servo, super strong![X(] I think if you put the jet on the ground with gear up and activate gear down from radio they have the power to lift it up. http://rcuvideos.com/video/HS-225MG-gear-mpg

VERY nice!!! How did you handle the limit switches? How does it know when it is time to shut down the servo motor?

Thanks for that resjets, I have fiddled with similar ideas myself. Have you considered some of the whitworth screws (1/8?)
The threads are coarser which will speed the operation up a bit & may still leave you with enough muscle. - John.

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
I have considered coarser threads or faster servo, higher voltage. going to add jack screw servo to my direct drive nose gear for my new falcon. nose gear will retract forward. http://rcuvideos.com/video/DDR2-mpg

Hi all ,
I just wanted to share with you all that i finally finished my Falcon 120 ( renamed to Falcon P60 due it being powered by a JETCAT P60)
Maiden flight was carried out today , perfect conditions , and the model behaved flawlessly.. I loved it! took off like a dream , needed 1 click of right trim and 3 clicks of down trim and she was flying!!!!
Gear retracted and flap 1 retracted and I was off ! I can see why you all have been raving regards this plane . It's nice to fly something not so topend like my other jets and just have something that is a real pleasure to fly! .
I will follow up with some photos of the internals soon , however i only have these pics availble at this point in time
Specs are as follows
Model has been fibreglassed, Powered by a Jetcat P60 , DS 821 servo's thruout except for Elevator ( JR8411) , Power box sensor switch provides the R/X voltage regulation and has Duralite packs onboard. JR 9XII radio using Specktrum Technology. Custom manufactured landing gear struts by Haydn aka "Jet Junkie" ( he also painted the model ) Fully covered Gear door on the nose utalising a BVM Micro air switch for sequencing.
Anyhow more will follow however in the meantime enjoy the pics.. The time we took these the overcast clouds had set in and did nothing for the justice of the pic . the red and green are actually sparkle glitter paint and looks very cool in the direct sunlight.
Happy Landings everyone!!
Brgds
Michael

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
Hi Michael, great colour scheme, glad you enjoyed the model as much as we do. Cant wait to see Joes new colour scheme either. I have been really busy working abroad, so no time to fly recently. I was in Dubai and a friend introduced me to the jet flyers out there. They have a great flying site out in the desert and a lot of high end aircraft/engines and equipment. I met one of the guys who writes frequently in the Jet international magazine, great guy.
While i was there, a chap flew his beautifully crafted, extra large Hawk aircraft, which flew beautifully. He was about to land and then turned in really sharply and landed quite abruptly. His model had suddenly lost power, just as he was about to turn base leg. On the ground the engine was stuck at just over idle power. He returned home to download all the info from his onboard systems. A week later a friend bumped into him and he explained the cause of the engine problem. The ECU had been damaged by a static discharge. The conditions on the day, were dusty and temp was around 32 to 34 degsC. The manufacturer of the ECU has seen this failure before and sugested that when refuelling, not to put the refuelling container on the ground and to use a certain different on board fuel pump, which is less likely to cause static.
I have thought about bonding the fuel conainer and pump, to the aircraft in the early days, but the only point you could bond, would be the brass tube in the fuel tank bung to the refuel tube, metal nozzel. In flight in our UK weather, I dont see that static build up would be a problem, except if flying when thunderstorm activity is present and the air is charged, but in the really hot dusty conditions in Dubai, that might be worth considering. not sure about the reason for keeping the refuel container off the ground, i would have thought that might be better, although we do not have conducting tyre compounds on our undercarriage. Also a large model like this, carries around 6 liters of fuel, so the chance of charging the fuel up while refuelling, is greater than we would see, with our modest fuel uplift. Also speed of refuel would increase the risk.
An interesting topic, dont want to drift off topic here, but worth a mention if someone has an unexplained shut down whilst flying in a thunderstorm lol.
cheers tim

I'm finally done with Falcon number 2. I started it up and taxied it around the driveway yesterday. Today I put the stickers on and did the final balancing. The weather forecast looks pretty crappy for the next few days (windy & rain) so the maiden will have to wait for a good day. Here's a few pictures.

Hey BlazerB52,
The model used the supplied hinges. I was tempted to use the Greatplanes ones however i did some tests on the supplied ones and they seem more then adequate.
Enjoy

Mike, I heard via the grapevine that Giggo lost his Falcon at Wangaratta Jets. Do you have any imfo of what might have gone wrong as I am using the same setup that he has including the 2.4 gig radio. I fortunately have not had any glitches with mine.

I went to Wang & I remember just one Bobcat 120 crashing, a red & white one (custom painted) with a great finish.
The word was one flap retracted during landing & he was not high enough to take any action to recover it. - John.

Joe,
Great color scheme on the Falcon! I noticed something in the pics. Why aren't your flap and aileron linkages set-up inline with travel? I see u moved them to be closer to the center of the control surface but wouldn't this put them in a bind geometrically?
Jeff

Jeff,
I'm not sure I know what you mean, maybe it's angle of the photo. Linkages are set up in accordance with best practices.
In neutral position the aileron control rods are 90 deg. to the hinge line and 90 deg. to the servo arm.
The flap controls are set up such that in the full down position the rod is 90 deg. to the hinge line and straight in line with the servo output shaft. That way the servo bearing and shaft are carrying the flap load instead of the gear teeth.

Derrek,
I used Pro-link small struts for 5/16" trunion set on the mains
http://www.dreamworksrc.com/catalog/...oducts_id=1614
These are shorter than the original strut length so you'll have to relocate the well wells to accommodate the length and offset. See picture in post # 2560.
For the nose gear I used the Pro-link Large Nose strut
http://www.dreamworksrc.com/catalog/...oducts_id=1178
Keep in mind that I re-did the nose formers so that the retract and strut fully retracts into the fuse. If you stay with the original formers and mounting this strut may be a little longer than needed. You probably could shorten the strut somewhat if necessary.
