hobby city Turnigy HP 50 engine-any good?
Hobby city has a new gas engine Turnigy HP50. It looks to have a DL50 cylinder with a different crank case. Has anyone tried one? How do they perform?

I bought the Turnigy 52cc gasoline engine from Hobbycity.com and it was delivered last week by the mailman. I have not fired it up since I am trying to clear my garage first. However on visual inspection the machining is OK and for $159.95 which I paid for it I am initially happy. I should be able to run it next month(May) on a test stand and hopefully with my garage cleared already I hope to test fit it on my CMP Cessna 140 83" wingspan. I eventually plan on running it on 1/3 10% glow fuel with 2/3 E85 gasoline as I already have received the glow plug aluminum adapter to run it on glow plugs eliminating the ignition battery, ignition module, spark plug and cable. Probably will save close to 1 lb. by going glow. Hopefully the airframe will be strong enough to absorb all this vibration and power. I plan on reinforcing the critical areas with triangle stock and plywood doublers just for insurance against wood/glue fatigue.

How about some break-in time on gas/oil mix, as it was designed to burn? Otherwise, any failure, such as a busted crankshaft, or blown piston, won't really carry much weight if it occurs on gas/glow.

I have one sitting hear waiting to be installed on a 50 cc Yak.
MUCH maching, SURE LOOKS NICE !!!! Hope it runs as good as it looks,,,,,

The 52cc is a 45cc overboar motor, not the 50HP motor...
We will be running the OVERBOAR this weekend on a Giant U-CAN_DO on its maiden flight..

The manual that came with it advises to break the engine in on no nitro glow fuel. They say the engine will run cooler on glow fuel.

My father used to have an old hillybilly expression that he would say during such times. It was, "Paper will lie still for anything". Meaning that paper will let you write anything you want upon its surface without protest. Truth or wisdom has nothing to do with it.
I'm not trying to be insulting or a smarty parts. I only meant that using the engine in the conditions for which it was designed might reflect a truer picture of what kind of value the engine represents.

A guy in our club has one on a 30% sd yak. It flies the crap out of it!!!! It's been well used/abused and keeps on going. He loves it. For the price, if you break something, no big deal, get another... Anyway, after seeing many flights on it and how well it runs, several of us in the club have also bought them..

I paid $159.95 for my Turnigy 52cc overbore and on visual inspection it looks to be well machined........of course everybody now uses CNC machine tools, so more or less the machining finesse is there. As for durability.......forged crankshaft??, cylinder and piston metallurgy, ball bearing quality, shaft seal rubber compound, etc. Only time will tell................but hey!! for $159.95 if it lasts for 100 hours........then I got more than my money's worth. Model airplanes are only one heartbeat away from disaster that is why I am very reluctant to put expensive engines on my model airplanes and also my model airplanes are all under $225. I don't have money to indulge on expensive airplanes and engines.

Maiden flight went PERFECT !!!!!
Motor was very rich new, had to lean H / L
Not sure about the model weight but will hover at 1/3 throttle
We are using Penzoil 32-1 for break in...
Motor is still a little tight and performance should improve over time but
MORE than needed to hover and pull out...
VERY FUNNY PLANE as all moves are in SLOW MOTION...
I may just do the same combo and remove the pink....
Note: There was a group of 10 or so young girls that clapped
and yelled at our every move with the CHEAP PLANE and Motor...[8D]
Installing smoke next..
COMBO worth every cent SO FAR..

glad to hear you guys are having good success with your engines. I'm looking at either the 45CC or the 52CC gas engine from hobbycity for my 1/4 scale patty wagstaff extra.
Does anyone know how to put a smoke system on this engine? That is pretty much the only thing keeping me from going electric with this plane

It would be nice if the website worked properly. I'm interested in the bicycle engine. Clicking the short cut takes me nowhere.

There are now 5 of the TGY 52's running at our field. They all run great. Pretty scary for such a cheap motor. Scary for the LHS and the other engine importers that is. One of the motors did have aluminum machine shavings caught in a red grease that packed the rear bearing. It was pretty obvious when turning the motor over by hand. It ran fine after getting sprayed out. Just a FYI. Lots of motor for the money.

I got mine a couple of days ago - the Turnigy HP50 (or TR-50HP) is a rotary valve engine as mentioned above (DA and DL are reed valve engines) and the measured weight is:
engine with no aux: 1370 g
muffler: 102 g
ign system: 96 g
stand-offs (4 pcs): 77 g
plug: 14 g
misc (bolts): 50 g
TOTAL: 1709 g (1 kg 709 g).
