Default RE: Phase 3 EF - 16

Hi All,

I’d like to introduce an [link=http://morganmill.com/RC/rc-site-10-7-08_029.htm]ESC Fairing[/link] for the Phase 3 EF-16.

http://morganmill.com/RC/rc-site-10-7-08_029.htm

What could be done in hours is now possible in minutes. The [link=http://morganmill.com/RC/rc-site-10-7-08_029.htm]ESC Fairing[/link] is a drop in aerodynamic enhancement for the interior of the duct in front of the fan. The ESC Fairing covers the wires and sharp edges in the motor compartment while creating laminar flow where it’s needed the most in a ducted fan – right in front of the motor. This should gain you performance and speed across the wide range of motor and fan configurations possible with this aircraft.

Weather it’s a stock motor on 3 cells or one of the high performance setups on 4 cells covered in detail in this thread - it will add speed and performance to an already outstanding performer at next to nothing in weight and installation time.

The mold was machined such that it provides suggested cut lines for an optional oval shaped hole at the rear of the battery compartment and necessary cooling hole cut lines for the stock ESC location.

Hot air from the battery compartment is exhausted through the rear hole and out around the ESC Fairing through the cheater holes. If you choose to close your cheater holes you can use the optional oval hole to exhaust hot air into the fan itself. See installation suggestions on the web site.

The [link=http://morganmill.com/RC/rc-site-10-7-08_029.htm]ESC Fairing[/link] will fit the stock fan shroud and any 70mm setup and is placed between the belly pan and the main fuselage. Used in conjunction with The Cheater Hole Supports it makes for a superb installation setup.
Made from High Impact Polystyrene.

Thanks for looking!

Gary...NOW there's a useful unit. It keeps the wires at bay and cleans the area up in front of the fan. I'm fairly impressed with this because I used clear packing tape to hold servo extension wires down and the ESC wires....this does it all, and cleanly I might add. Since it does hold the ESC down in it's proper spot, that should make things a lot easier too. GOOD JOB on this one.

I made my air intake removable on my current F-16, which already saved the day when I had a servo fail. I get paid tomorrow, I'll check the finances, I may buy this unit....it's a great upgrade, and I can get rid of the packing tape in the air chamber.

Started putting together my new f-16 today.
Using a HET 6904 fan and HET 2w 23 motor.
60 amp esc. Had to melt away a little foam to get the bits and pieces in.
Using a 4cell 25c pack. Hitec hs65 servos and Futaba 2.4 reciever.

Should be super quick and unlimited vertical [>:]

The 2W-23 works best on a 5s 2500 25c pack producing 950 watts and drawing 50 to 52 amps. The 2W-20 is designed for 4s use. I'm running both motors in my 16s and both have unlimited vertical.

Nice ships dude...... Here's a pic of mine, which has landing gears and steerable nose wheel BTW.

During our last electric fun fly, one gentleman from Arizona had a 5s 3300mAh pack stuffed in his EF-16. That battery and the ARC motor he was running, he knocked off a speed run of 177 mph. A little carving and glassing is required to get a 5s in but worth it!!

I just got one of these, haven't put it together yet.

What's the consensus on keeping the tailerons from getting ripped off on landing? Is it easy enough to flare and then release before touchdown to keep the leading edge from catching, or is it wise to rig up (or buy) some ventral fins to prevent this? The stuff on the Morganmill website looks cool, but it's hard for me to justify spending $18 on a set of fins for a $99 plane.

Thanks!

He is running a Castle 125 with the ARC motor. In both of mine in which I'm running a the HET 2W-20 (and a 4s 2500 mAh) an 2W-23 (and a 5s 2500 mAh), I have 80 amp ESC installed.

With the HET 2W-23 and 5s 2500 mAh, you can expect to see speeds of 145-155 mph with a flight time of 5 to 6 minutes with throttle management.

Of course you do the upper and lower lamination with .030 plastic to re-enforce that weak area where the tailerons go through the foam. I have ONCE knocked my taileron hard enough to warrant re-enforcement of the inside and outside panels...then repair. The field I fly in is a little less than groomed to lawn status...things catch. If it were lawn type groomed....you should be able to grease it in with NO damage. Other than that...I have a LOT of landings that incur no damage.

Hey PKH.......I did not like the fins.. They grab too much and u end up slaming the nose down.
I do what you suggested, just before touch down I release the elevator.. This works nice..
Have fun

Look at the [link=http://morganmill.com/RC/rc-site-10-7-08_028.htm]Belly Pan Kit[/link] - there is a Intake skid / Antenna in the kit. Saves the the Belly pan from fast landings and ingesting a few less rocks and other goodies and wrecking the fan. You get a kit price that saves you $6.00 off seperate parts.

Hobby People doesn't sell just the Belly Pan either - the parts only kit is $64 most of the time and $49 when you can catch it on sale. One rough landing and it's $49 - $64 bucks. You make the choice.

With the Fins installed you can flare the landing a lot more than with out - as you can use the tailirons all the way to touch down.

But hey that's just me and I am bias

Hope this helps and whatever way you go - have fun!

Gary

I have always wanted an EDF plane. I think I may have finally decided on the Phase 3 F-16. I do have a question about the 3 different forms you can buy it in from Hobby People. Is the kit with the motor/fan/esc worth getting ([link=http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/107312.asp]this one[/link]). Or would I be better off to get the kit with out it and add my own esc/motor/fan setup ([link=http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/107311.asp]like this one[/link])? What's a good recommended power set up for this one?

Last question is, what's the difference in the 2 kits, besides $20? ([link=http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/109329.asp]cheaper kit[/link])

Fly it as stock for a while...get the one that has motor/ESC/fan unit....you can always mod it later.

Best to see if you can actually fly it before pumping $$$ into it.

Thats probably good advice... I always seem to get carried away when starting something new. I did already have all the upgrades pick out and it all planned... I'm just waiting to see if I need to order a new receiver, or if I will be having one come available soon. I seem to have a magic number of plans that I can seem to keep all flight worth at a time...

Just finished building  my second Phase 3. This one has a HET motor/fan unit in it and I"ll be using a 2650mah 4s lipo.

The stock Phase 3 came in at 25.4 oz. This latest one with the HET unit came in at 35 oz.

Just wondering if anyone has flown one at that weight, what it flys like and how much faster do you need to land.
