I guess it is time for a little update. I know the audience is sitting on pins and needles waiting on this mothership of all Top Gun scale machines to be finished! Anywho, I have been hitting it here and there (between chasing my 3 girls around the yard). I have the wing glued in place and the cockpit finished. The cowling still needs some improvement. The wing fillets will be put on the top of the wing soon and more sheeting on top of the wing to flow into the fuselage. Started some covering as well.

THANK YOU FOR THIS THREAD!!!I have had the HOB A-7 for about 5 years and seeing this thread has given me the gumption to get it finished. I am going to do it at the 4450th "LV" jets that were at Nellis as a cover story for the Red Eagles and F-117 project. I have a Super Tiger .34 in the nose.It should fly well.

I did, but it has been a slow process. Build a wing here, then quit for a while and so on. I actually remounted the motor yesterday and got the servos installed. All that is left is to hook everything up and cover it. She is ready to go

Is that your YF-22? Is it similar in size to the House Of Balsa A-7? Does it also have a Super Tiger .32? How well does it fly? The engine sure appears to have a lot of down thrust.

No, thats the Hangar 9 F-22 (ex-pts jet). I took all the trainer stuff off, changed the decal scheme and put an OS 52 FX in on 30% nitro. It is designed for a .40-46 yet I found that the .52 makes it an unlimited vertical rocket. The downthrust is factory still.

I am curious to see how well these engines will stay cool. The engine inlet appears larger than the exhaust on the bottom of the fuselage. I have a Kyosho P40 Warhawk with an inverted Saito 65 and that engine gets too hot with the cowl on. The engine would lose power in flight but ever since I started flying it with the cowl off it flies great. I've read that you need a larger exhaust than inlet opening for better cooling.

Quickturn, you are correct. There are discussions on the engines and some other airplane forums. I seem to recall a 1 to 3 ratio. Meaning the exit should be three times the inlet size. But certainly the exit is desired to be larger.

The Hanger 9 F-22 sounds like a fun plane! It has a wingspan of 47.9 without the optional wing tip extensions and 675 sq.in. wing area. Flying weight 7 to 7.5 lb. With the tip extensions, 52" span. 731 sq. in.
The HOB A7 has 39" span and only 345 sq. in. wing area. I'm beginning to think a 40 size engine may be too heavy for the little A-7. I'm all for sticking a bigger engine on a plane but the A-7 doesn't have a lot of wing area. Do the 25 size engines turn more rpm than the 40 size? I think more rpm would equal more speed.

Everyone I talked to in the past told me to go with the Super Tiger G34 and that's what I bought. It fits perfect and puts out as much power as a strong .40 to mild .46 yet weighs the same as a .28.

The ST .34 is the engine I bought for mine as well. Almost .40 size power in a .25 size package. OS has a new .35AX that might be worth looking at. From what I can tell, it is the same size and weight but puts out 25% more power.
If I didn't have so much going on right now I'd break my kit out of storage and join you guys.

I just wanted to check in. I have plans and Laser cut parts for the Rich Uravitch A7. I also have plans for the HOB A7.
The A7 will be the next plane to hit the building board, once my Laser, F-18, Eagle 2, TF P-51 are done.

Hey guys! Sorry, I have been ''tardy'' on the build. I have not finished the covering. I mounted the wing and finished the sheeting and fin on the top of the wing. Tuened out really well. The bad news is that it is hanging in my garage now. I guess I have developed serious sinus problems with all the flying balsa dust from the build. I started sneezing and my ears began to hurt, then came the headaches! The '''Doc'' told me to put it aside for a few eeks and let my sinuses heal. Not really much sanding left at all anyway. I will get back on it soon.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear about the allergy attack! I guess you weren't wearing a mask. I don't either but we should. Sanding outside helps. Confined areas with no air flow are the worst.

I too seem to have developed an allergy to balsa dust. I find that wearing one of the cheap dust masks from the hardware store really helps cut down on my symptoms. I also have a shop vac handy to clear the area when I'm done and get the dust off my clothes. I even put the mask in a 1 gallon zip top bag to make sure it stays dust free.

Well, I have got the motor situation figured out! What do you think? Since it lands hot anyway, might as well get one REALLY good flight out of it! All kidding aside, I have spent too much time building and have neglected my little daughters. Their hair has grown out and everything! I need to take them for a hair cut, I guess!
