RE: EXI 450 thread
ORIGINAL: FlyRC4aHigh
Hello, Still looking for servos etc for my EXI 450 a couple of questions?
Told an HS-81 would be a good tail servo, would it be a good servo for cyclic etc?
Want to mount gyro under tail boom, possibly a 401 , 500t, or a telbee, looking at it the tail rod may be to long, and might interfer, is it? how do you adjust it?
Hoping to go to IRCHA this week to check things out

mounting the gyro under the tail boom is preferred since its protected against a possible blade strike. but i couldnt get it mount under there.
Grawl, all the exi's i have had got the metal swash. but i think the composite swash will work just fine.

Thanks Noob.
I know this is the EXI thread but... eHirrobo has the CX AE450 V2 for $59 plus shipping. The AE is an all alum copter x and for $59 plus another $25 for shipping sounds like a great deal.

RE: EXI 450 thread
Can someone recommend an ESC. As I was starting my new Volcano 25A up it caught fire.... I am not sure what is wrong. I quickly put it out before it spread any further.
Could the motor be shorted or something. I was turning approximately 20RPM at ignition point...
Can someone read the resistance Line to Line of their Motor and let me know so I can order a new one tonight to have it for Friday. Preferrably from helidirect, because I get ground shipping next day from them...
Can someone select a new motor/esc combo for me preferably one that doesn't catch fire? I can post carnage pics if you want. The last two FETs got so hot they turned white and actually caught fire.

RE: EXI 450 thread
a 25a esc on a 450 heli is a bit underpowered. you'll want to get a 35a or 40a esc. I have the align 35a esc and its been working well for over a year.

RE: EXI 450 thread
Keep in mind if you go to a 40amp make sure it has a BEC. Many are not equiped (even if they say 40Amp BEC on them).
When looking they will give you an operating voltage (usally 5volts) and an amp rating for the 5 volts. The higher the rating the better, especially if you are using digital servos.

RE: EXI 450 thread
Does anyone else notice their heli rotor wobbling slightly as they start to spin up. I have a slight sort of vibration on the head, everything looks straight. It seems to go away when the headspeed gets up.
I am setting up the heli tonight again with the Align 35A esc, and 430XL with a 12T Pinion. Hopefully flying tonight, or definitely tomorrow.
I am still waiting to maiden this thing after my many issues...
Also, what is the best way to get the blades perfectly out straight?
-Steve
Thanks Again...

Mack....Finless Bob can explain these things better than anyone. Check out the CCPM1 and CCPM2 at the helifreak tech room. then check out blade tracking 101. all his videos are excellent and explain clearly what does what.

RE: EXI 450 thread
So...Noob, this is going back a ways but why did you start your own EXI Thread. I find it difficult to know where to post between this thread and Crash's thread.
I guess both of these threads are really geared towards EXI's and so maybe I should start my own showing the build of the CX450AEV2???
Or maybe we should just start a new general 450V2 Clone thread for anybody with a clone of the Trex 450SEV2??? That way it doesn't matter which brand it is because they are pretty much all identical anyways??? At least in design.

RE: EXI 450 thread
Well...I made this thread back in May of 2008. the EXI 450 back then was fairly new with very few people who tried one. the very first one I bought was $99 and it was the basic model. It didnt even have thrust bearings on the blade grips. After a while the word spread and before you know it everybody had one.
This thread was buried for a long time until FlyRc4ahigh asked to rekindle this thread which I did.

RE: EXI 450 thread
Hello
Where is the other thread u guys are talking about?
I'm still getting info on my EXI clone, also obtaining equipment piece by piece. So far I have gotten the following and would like feedback on the items.
1. I got a Zippy Flightmax 2200 3c 11.4 25C battery. In reference to the 25c What is this ?(discharge rate?) I've seen batteries with 15C -20C etc. Whats the diffrence? which one should I stick With?
2. I have a Futaba 401 Gyro, I'm sure this will work, Would a cheeper Align or Telebee be ok? What about a JR500T I have a couple of these.
3. I got 3 cyclic JR285's digital but wanted metal gears, didn't notice tll to late as a high bidder on ebay that they were not metal.
4. the heli came with a EMAX HL2215/450 3800kv Brushless motor , these are ali over ebay , is this a good motor? does the cooling fan feature really work?
5. Back to the tail servo, do I really need to go the the expense on a futaba 9560? which would be the best choice of the following the 9560, hs81, or a jr290 ? any other suggestions?
Well enough questions for now , More later

1. good choice for battery. 25C is discharge rate. the higher the better.
2. Gy401 is a great gyro, go with it and forget about the telebee or the align gyro. the Jr500T might be OK.
3. JR285 is a great servo. one of the best. fly them, crash them, strip them, then regear them with metal gears.
4.most 450 brushless motors is good. even the cheap ones.
5. the tail servo is defintely the one servo youCANT skimp on. SPENDBIGONTHISONE. go for the futaba 9257 with the align 5.1v stepdown.

RE: EXI 450 thread
Wow, This heli is so much easier to fly than my Falcon 40. It is stable, doesn't get taken away by wind. Quite a worthwhile investment!
Gyro Problem
The gyro is not holding the tail in headholding mode. The nose slowly rotates counterclockwise. Also when I give it harder throttle the gyro lets go of the tail and it emphasizes the counter-clockwise motion much greater.
My current gains on the DX6i are. 75/30. Do I increase the HH? I have only been using it on the 75% which I am assuming is the HH mode, Light on G401B.
Thanks guys.

RE: EXI 450 thread
Make sure you have 0 pitch at midstick. what motor and pinion? low headspeed will do that also. What tail servo? 75% gain on heading hold is plenty. maybe too much. go over the mechanical setup again. Make sure you watch Finless bob setup on ccpm1 and ccpm2, watch the video where he sets up the gy401...I think its called gyro 101 or something like that.

I was having the same exact issue before I was grounded several months ago. I wound up correcting it with a little sub trim using the process below but as a brief explanation here you go; if you watch the light on the gyro while in HH mode it will begin to blink if move the rudder stick or move the sub trim to far to the left or right. and so what I noticed was it wasn't the same in both directions and what I wound up doing was finding the actual gyro center by using the rudder sub trim by watching when the light came on when I used sub trim in for each direction .
I don't remember my actual numbers that I came up with but as an example;
With the gyro in HH mode - Start at 0 sub trim then move the sub trim to right until the light begins to blink and record the number. - I.E. 20
Go back to 0 and move the sub trim to the left until it begins to blink and record that number - I.E -10
Now in this scenario the total travel between the location the light begins to blink is 30 clicks and so the half way point is 15 from either end of the scale
And so if you go up 15 from -10 or down 15 from 20 the mid point is = a sub trim of 5 - Set the sub trim at this number
Now once you have this set, you will want to go back and make sure everything mechanically is squared up again in rate mode
I may sound crazy but it worked for mine. I hope it helps

the hs81 will not fit as cyclic servos... the hs65mg are probably the best bang for the buck servo on this heli.

Not infront of it right now but my motor/esc setup is as follows.
Stock Gear on Rotor.
13T Pinion
450XL Motor
Align 35A Esc
Radio
I believe these are settings, I will confirm tonight
Throttle 0 - 25 - 50 - 75 - 100
Pitch 45-45 - 50 - 75 - 100
Where 50 is equal to 0 Pitch.

RE: EXI 450 thread
you should be fine with headspeed then. increase your normal throttle curve to: 0,65,80,90,100. this will give you better tail control when your learning in normal mode. It will also increase your headspeed. your pitch curve is fine I guess although mine is 42,46,50,75,100 in normal mode...but I dont really fly in normal at all until i'm about to land.
It must be the setup on the tail then. first check the mechanics of the tail. make sure nothing is binding. you must find the center of travel for the tail pitch slider. then setup your gyro. Make sure when you intialize your heli you're in heading hold.

RE: EXI 450 thread
So, I have been having a little bit of an issue with the tail bouncing and so last night I did the fuel tube mod and wow! what a diff!
The tail has absolutely no play and is rock solid. Unlike anything I have flown before. Now all I need to do is work to reduce my pyro rate. I have expo dialed in at 25% and its still wicked fast at barely any stick movement. I think I will just keep adding expo till it feels good.
Also have a slight (very slight) vibration that I think is coming from the paddles but I am not sure. I am using CF paddles with no weights. What I noticed while putting it together is that one paddle was trimmed a little more than the other making it just a little thinner. I suspect this paddles is tad lighter and so I will try adding a little tape to see if it helps.
Other than those items this thing will pretty much hover on its own. Well at least as long as a 450 will hover on its own...if you know what I mean...
Now we are havin some fun!

RE: EXI 450 thread
Hey guys.! New to the thread, which i hope is still alive. I am building up a exi450v2 cnc head /plastic tail model. Im using hxt900 servos. Noticed allot of other people are also. Will look into a better tail servo soon.
My main problem with the build at this moment is installing the hxt900's into cyclic. I mounted the first one from the inside out then realized i have no screws to put them in. The bag of screws that you guys say is xtra, contains 2 micro nuts and bolts that i could use for one servo but what about the rest ?
the hxt900 does come with some screws but they are not mounting screws
Sorry if its a repeated question couldn't find it anywhere.
So how did you guys with hxt900's or other servos mount them into the exi450, what screws used? where to get them etc thanks!!

RE: EXI 450 thread
I just used screws I had around. about 8-10mm long self tapping screws work fine. Make sure you have the servo nuts like these to secure the screw. http://www.helidirect.com/align-anti...cer-p-6865.hdx
you can also use servo horns as servo nuts.
