RE: Byron Corsair Build
My new Robart gear has arrived this week. I have everything needed to finish the Corsair, except for time. It will be December before I get back to my build. Good to see some posts to keep this thread going.

Craig,
We'll be looking forward to you getting back into the shop!

STRAW POLL for ALL;
1.) Is anyone else building/flying a Byron's Corsair this summer?[sm=shades_smile.gif]
2.) What's the best dummy radial you have ever used for the Corsair? Can you show pictures?[sm=49_49.gif]

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Hey Guys!
I just picked up a new project from my buddy Rob. It is a Byron's F4U with a Sach's 4.2, Byron's Purr-Power muffler, and what looks to be an original Byron's 3 bladed 24" prop. I have several questions that you might be able to help me with;
[ul][*] The prop blade look to be nylon. Do people really use this? I've been flying RC since 1970 and we stopped using nylon almost 30 years ago because unless they were boiled, they fail.
[*] How are you fastening your outer wing panels? (#screws, size, location?) My 1st Corsair uses (3) #8 screws tapped into the bottom of the spar for each panel. THis project has one (1) screw per panel mounteed from the top (hole in the top of the wing).
[*] What's your experience with the Purr-Power mufflers? The muffler in this project has one exhaust outlet while my Q-52 wersion has (3) (scale look). THis sounds like it will seriously choke the power.
[*] Have you had experience in re-engining aircraft w/Purr-Power mounts? It looks like I'll have to make a new firewall mount similar to Craig's and start over.
[/ul]
I'd appreciate you experience.
Thanks!
Scott

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Keep the engine and the Muffler. It is a great combo and I am always surprised by the extra power from the purr power muffler. I would like the prop system but that is a personal choice. If you dont want to use it then get a two blade adapter ( I think B&B have them). I have a second safety screw in addition to the one bolt that is standard on all the Byrons. It is just enough to stop the wing pulling off and is up to you how you locate it.
Good Luck

We had our MAD-2009 (Model Aviation Day (open house)) Saturday & I had the opportunity to put some flights in on the old Corsair!
Fortunately my buddy Mike Eischen had a camera and shared these images with me.
The high speed strafing runs were fun! Split-S from 600 ft and take it down to the deck (preferably 1 span above the ground) while my "friends" are chanting 'lower, lower'.
I did not realize how much flap I use until I see these landing shots!

RE: Byron Corsair Build
I have a Byron corsair (Sach 4.2 , purr power, robart retracts, etc).
It's about 12 years old and hasn't flown in about 10 years.
I want to replace the air system, radio, servos and gas tank .
Can anyone suggest replacements /up-grades? I'd really like to see this beautiful plane fly again.
P.S. I'm a newbie to this site , so any help with communicating on RCU would also be grealty appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Walt,
I'm just revamping the pneumatics and fuel systems in my #10 Corsair myself. I want to run up the engine and fly it before the snow sets in.
This is a good group but we also cross-talk with the TF Corsair Build & the 1/6th scale Corsair build threads. All three use the same Robart systems and engine size. Some just get HEAVY [sm=what_smile.gif]
I'm planning to strip #10 this winter and refinish it as a scale bird. I'll be selling #29 as I can't have more than (2) Corsairs in the hangar at any one time. [&o]

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Man I wish we had a camera going today. Scott and I ended up at the same field today and after some issues with my landing gear we were able to get a flight in together. Man nothing beats a couple Corsairs coming in low then pulling out together. We were also up with a couple Top Flight mustangs at the time. Too bad I didn't completely fix the gear and so I had to belly it in. No big deal at our field though as the grass is smooth and soft.
Can't wait to do it again.

Scott,
I'd love to be there but one of my good friends is finally getting married that day and he's asked me to be in the wedding. I'll be doing some more flying this weekend and maybe I can get someone to man my Nikon and get some shots

Has anyone been in touch with IRON BAY MODEL PRODUCTS lately?
I have been trying to call & e-mail for over a month now with no response. [sm=sad_smile.gif]
Their web site is up and functional but has no indication that they are not in business.
http://www.ironbaymodelcompany.com/index.htm
I need a set of Corsair ABS Oil Cooler Vents. If you have a set and are willing to part with them, please e-mail me. Otherwise I'll need to scratch some up myself.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
I picked up a Byron Corsair kit (still in the original box) a few months ago on ebay and am getting all my hardware together for a planned winter build. I have a two 25 pound mustangs (one with a DA-50 and one with a DL-50) that I am very happy with, and was wondering how a DA or DL would work for powering this plane. I plan on building it as semi scale and think it would come in at the lower to mid point in the weight range. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

RE: Byron Corsair Build
The 50 will fly it but it's not going to be fast. My 32 lb Corsair powered by a 3W75 can just about keep pace with a Top Flite mustang powered by a G45 but gets blown away by the Mustang powered by a DA-50. The mustang is a sleeker airframe then the corsair and the Byron will end up close to 30 lbs.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Not everyone builds heavy. My current Byron's Corsair (VF-17 #29) has a Quadra Q-52 on a Byron's PurrPower muffler/mount package turning a 20x10 @ 7600. It weighs in at 23# with 2 1/2# in the cowl for balance.
I would a expect that a DL-50, or better yet a DA-50 would swing a 22x10 nicely and be atleast as fast as any of the G-62's being used today. You'll just have to add more weight to the front to make up for the lightness of the engine.
I too have a new project that a friend had sitting in the shop for 10 years and it needs a rebuild. I'm looking to put my DA-85 in it running a Solo 26" scale 3-blade prop.
This thread is a fountain of wisdom and inspiration on how to build/set-up the Byron's Corsair.
Thanks again Craig for starting it!
Craig, when will you get back to NA?

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Bob,
The projects have been coming fast and I'm running out of money faster! (See shop photo) My wife say's I should have the handle "Buy2XS" vs. Fly2XS.
I had picked up a 2nd Byron's Corsair (#10) with a Sach's 4.2 Byron's PurrPower Mount & Muffler & Byron's 3 blade prop. I took a look through it and see that I'll have to remount the servos and trim the fin and wings to get more travel from the rudder & ailerons.
I took a look in the tail and I saw that there was no trailing edge spar on the stab. It was butt glued to the fiberglass fuse. I see it as an acident waiting to happen! (see #10 photo)
I picked up my 3rd Byron's Corsair (Project #3) and it was partially finished. Again I looked in the tail to see that the stab did not even have the plywood trailing edge spar (called in the plans) and the butt joint is weak. (see Prj #3 photo)
I plan to cut the stabs from the fuse for both projects and install an arrow shaft (similar to Craig's set-up) and a trailing edge spar for both.
Does anyone have a suggestion on removal of the existing stabs?
Thanks!
Scott

RE: Byron Corsair Build
If you can build it light like Scott says the DA50 will be good but if you creep up towards 30 lbs you'll want the power of the 75-85cc engine. But it really depends on who you fly with. I fly with guys that have some fast warbirds and we like to fly together. It's not fun when you can't keep up. But if you fly by yourself then the speed difference wont be that major.
I would take note of Scott's input and ideas. He's a great pilot and has built a few of these recently so has some great insight on this specific plane.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Mine weighs 32/33 pounds and flies great with a g-62. It flies and climbs just fine. Here is my worst flight at TG2009, http://videoserver.rcuniverse.com/rc..._wilson_lg.wmv
My buddy had one for years with a quadra 52, significantly less powerful than a da50. ad very successful. Byron used to sell the sach 4.2 (69cc) for these planes and they were the most you would need for this plane with a standard 2 blade. The da50 is close to the power of the G-62( many would say even) so it will be fine. The da85 is the new engine for the boom and zoom gang. Thanks to this engine and this forum I have now seen more planes crash from over powered planes than underpowered planes, Three very nice ones recently and all due to lack of experience with resolving issues from using oversized engines in a smaller plane. heck, my buddy uses one in his 112 inch mustang at 50 odd pounds and it goes better than my same plane with a 3w-150 inline.
good luck
Paul

Hey guys
I am still checking in from time to time.
Should be home the end of November, then after some family time, should start plugging away at getting it finished. I almost have forgotten where I have left off, beeen such a long time since I worked on it.
I am glad this thread is still moving along, great looking birds.
