Default Setting up dual rates for pattern flying

I need to ask something about setting up my plane. I use a JR 9X, which is the same as the 9303. When I fly 3D planes, I use 3 conditions. 1 - low rates, 2 - medium rates and 3 - as much as I can get rates. Now that I am learning to fly pattern I am keen to ask a few things. I also would like to keep things simple so I can learn to fly properly first. I am not too concerned about a different condition for spins & snaps yet (might I be wrong to assume this?).

i. my Sebart Ms Wind 50 manual states that deflection is 40* then Seb uses conditions for 3 different levels of rates. I am curious if I were to set Condition 1 with dual rate set at say 20% or 30%, would it not mean that the 'resolution' of the control will not be that fine? Am I correct to say this?

ii. as I want to keep it simple, would it not be better to just keep 2 rates with the mechanical adjustment being made to ensure that the deflection is not too much when you are in high rates?

Hope that someone may assist me ... thanks!

You are thinking correctly. To obtain the max precision (resolution) then your high rate should be LIMITED to the maximum deflection you would ever need to do pattern, which typically is in the 12-25* range, depending on how large the control surfaces are.

I use 2 rates. Low rate is my normal "through the sequence" rate. I really limit aileron and elevator so even if I get sloppy and move the sticks too far in rolls, it really won't roll too fast. I set the rudder up on low rates so I can do a nice stall turn (you do need enough rudder), then use expo to try and soften my hammer hand for rudder corrections and knife-edge maneuvers. I don't want to flip switches for stall turns, 'cause I might forget and zero it.

High rate I use for takeoff, landing, snaps and spins. You never know when a gust will require more control on takeoff or landing than the very soft "in flight" low rates I use. Still, my max deflection on this high rate setting is only about 18* on my current airplane.

That is what has worked good for me.

For a great introduction to precision aerobatic trimming, this article by Peter Goldsmith is a must read:

Let us know how it goes!

tiANci,

I use to use 3 also,...for pattern and IMAC planes. Pattern:1-normal flight, 2-snaps, 3-spins,etc. No right or wrong way,..just pilot preference. I have gone to two rates,.......to minimize the switch flipping between entry and exits. Fly what you are the most confortable with and adjust as you learn more and move up in classes. My opinion anyway,...........

Have fun,

Thanks for the replies guys. I can fly with 3 rates and still flip switches for differential, throttle-ele mix, KE mix etc. I don't really mind. Just was thinking about the so called 'resolution' issue, not that I know for a fact it will not be as good or it will really affect my flying. Anyways, guess I will go back to 2 rates and keep things simple for the moment. Need to learn to fly straight first.

Stek ... that's a great article. Love the clarification on geometry, resolution, servo blow back and getting CG right first! I always tell friends that work the CG first before you start to mix this and that. Good stuff!

Bill ... that Ms Wind is very nice, when will you get the 2M version? Heheheheehe ...

Bill ... we only live once! Hahahaahahaa ... let me say this. When I landed the Ms Wind 50 I told my pals, "I think I should purchase the 2M version!" Heheheheee ... not that I can fly well at all but that was the feeling I had. Also said to my pals who cares if I cannot fly well, at least I have the plane!!!
