What happened to my retract servo?
I was checking everything once again and all of a sudden when I lowered the gear, the servo kept running. It still goes up and down just fine but it keep running when it drops the gear as if it is stripped. What's the deal? I haven't had a chance to remove it and look at it yet. I had one guy tell me not to run it with a 6V battery but nobody else said anything. Its a hobbico piece. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXPB42&P=ML

RE: What happened to my retract servo?
The retract servo must travel 180 degrees. It sounds to me like your gear is comming to the full down position before it rotates 180 degrees and is still trying to rotate. If so this will put a tremendous drain on your batteries. You know the specs says it will operate on 6v so I'd accept that as fact, rather than listen to some guy. I'd loosen the connectors on the retract push rods and see how far the servo rotates then reattach everything and make certain it can still rotate the full 180.

If it appears to operate OK when the pushrod is removed, then set your pushrods at a inner hole on the servo wheel. This will allow the servo to rotate farther, the other benefit will be more power to the landing gear.

Well Brett the good thing about mechanical retracts is that they either work or they don't. But they still require attention. Have you figured it out yet?

Yeah I stripped a gear. It still works but has a bit of slip wher the teeth are stripped in a small section. I think I messed it up because I had the retainers at the outermost ends of the arm and it wasn't going a full 180 degrees to stop.

Yep it's got to go 180 or somethings gonna give. Might as well replace the needed gears and play with it till it works perfect, that way every 4 or 5 flights you'll know how to re-adjust it. Eventually it will not require much maintenance but in the beginning it can drive you nuts. Just think how much fun they are when they also rotate 90 degrees like in a P-40.

Just buy a set of replacement gears.
What I do is: measure how much travel you need on the pushrods, then take that big wheel that comes with the servos (Ooops, these only come with Futaba servos) the big wheels have no holes, so you can measure and drill your own so you get exactly the amount of movement that you need.
If you don't use Futaba servos, Oh well, trial and error time

I was wrong about the servo brand. It's this one. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=JSP20080 It doesn't show specs for 6V, do you think there might be a problem using a 6V battery?
