Default Falcon 41 Drive Alternative

Hi,

I've seen this setup on a few Cats and on the Bonzi website; Aeromarine 44" Avengers and Conquest's.

So I was wondering how this setup would work on a Falcon 41 Hull ?

I know everyone uses the offset rudder setup but I like the look of this drive system.

Any pros or cons to this setup ?

Looks like a good set up, I have been using speed master hardware so long I just tend to stick to what I know will work. And good Quality. Athough I went with Accu Tech Hardware on my Falcon and there product are some of the best I have ever seen. There machine work is second to none and service is awasome. Great people to deal with and quick delivery unlike some.
ACCU TECH; Good STUFF;

Good Luck;

A con. Center mounted rudders make it more of a hassle to remove the flex cable for greasing.

If you dont go for SAW, I would use a skegged strut on the Falcon.

That's a good point,

I could profile the top corner of the hinge that mounts in the standoff with a slight curve to allow it to pivot on the top
bolt. Then replace the bottom bolt with a shear bolt or nylon bolt possibly. The hassle of greasing the drive cable i guess
is somthing i'd have to put up with, lol .

Thanks for the imput guys, how would right an left turning be with this drive ?

What you have top remember the rudder is in the prop wash so extra forces are put on the rudder when turning so battery life may be effected also.Plus speed will be effected having the rudder there id think also.Having an offset rudder on a cat makes no difference to turning as they dont lean like monos so makes no difference which side you put it really.Ive ran hydros with rudders on either side and noticed no change in handling.

I have worked on a friends hull with this set up. In my opinion avoid it, you have to pull the rudder up each time you want to change a prop & the easiest way to remove the flex is to remove the engine. And as already mentioned you need to replace the lower nut & bolt with a brass one for any type of rudder kickback. Not worth the effort.

my mono came with the same set up.

its has a square ferral unsoldered, so there is no chance of loosing the prop and flexi cable, or snapping the soldered jointif there is not enough slack.

to remove the flexi cable is very easy, and you can adjsut the bottom of the rudder to be kicked towards or away from the transom

there is a grub screw holding the rudder on.

remove this remove the pin holding the rudder on.

leave on the steering linkage.

undo the 2 grub screws on the ferral the prop and prop shaft slides out.

then you just slide out the ferral.

then you slide out the flexi cable once the engine collet is lundone.

grease and slide back in, leaving the strut where it is, whole process is under 5 mins.

it may not be the best set up in the world, butit works and is very quick and easy to remove the flexi cable alot easyer then removing the motor, but i would sugest using the bonzi flexi cable set up or a squareunsoldered ferral like it was made for or it would be apita.

this is what i use for that rudder strut combo, the boys at bonzi cut it to what every lengh you need for no extra charge.
