What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
After a week long build Steve Roberts test flew Colin Gontier's GJC L-39 at our local grass strip. JetCat P160Sx and DSX-12 radio, we had already modified the rudder servo and changed the main gear door cylinders after my experience testing Andy Bascombe's version earlier this year. Just needs the cockpit...

It was around 6 1/2 inches. I didn't actually fly this one, can't remember where Andy's was. Looking at the wing I think you could go to 7" with plenty of expo on elevator. L-39's are usually elevator sensitive and need a rudder gyro to stop fish-tailing. Colin's aeroplane had a worrying feature I see on a lot of the far east kits, with spar tubes, the vertical fin moves on the spar-this needs fixing! A skim of thinned wing skinning epoxy should do it.
regards

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Guys,
My C of G is at 6.7". Seems just right to me and flys beautifully. Using around 20% - 30% expo on elevator and 15% on ailerons. It is naturally pretty stable in roll. I am experimenting with a gyro on rudder and this has reduced fishtailing. Having a lot of fun with it when I do manage to go flying! Looking forward to seeing Colin's - can't make Classic Jets this time though.

Can't make CJ! Hope you have a really good excuse!
Colin's could be around that, Steve and Colin just asked me where I thought it should be as I arrived at the patch and I pointed behind where they had it!
I know from the small AW and Savex L-39 they are happy with a forward position.

I am not totally sure of the exact CG position as we did the final checks at the field and guessed a little!
I think that we were between 6 & 6.5 inches back just to be on the safe side. Reading this thread shows that the model is ok with a forward or rearward CG, anything from 5.25 - 7 inches have been flown!
Test flight went without a hitch but we checked with Dave to get his opinion once he had eventually arrived at the field
As Dave says we flew it on a JetCat P-160SX which had plenty of power for reserve. Colin asked me to fit an additional 50oz Dubro tank as he had read that additional fuel capacity was needed, after an initial test flight of 9 minutes we hadn't even started on the 50oz tank!!!!!
Great flying model which can be flown in a very scale manor, just needs to scale cockpit to arrive and possible a rudder gyro and it will be a winner. I think that Colin is also now going to fit the drop tanks.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Thanks Steve/Dave. Mine CG is around the 6" mark. There seems to be a wide range of CG that people are using, thus my caution. I hope the weather gives me a slot now to maiden it. Perhaps we'll meet at Classic Jets.

Mine's at 6.5 and I like it there... My mate Andy Etherington who has logged more flights on one than just about anyone I know, has his at 6.75 and he has added a little tail weight also!
At this position it can have a tendency to flick out if you pull hard on elevator so reduce the movement to 17mm max.
Good luck John - it's really easy to fly -you'll really enjoy it!
Cheers

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Hi,
I need to match the bottom wing / fuse gray paint on my L39.
Does any one know the paint code number ? I have purchased just about every can of gray spray paint that I find and still no match.
Thanks.
Jose

This is my new paint scheme and new cockpit kit installed. Just got it ready and hopefully to maiden this one in December.
P160SX, 12X, ALL JR8711s on all surfaces, Navigation lights, landing lights, UP3 valves. Robart air cylinders. Big and bright. easy to see without wearing my eyeglasses.

I´ve got my Global Jet Cockpit for the L-39 and it´s lookin great. And it only took 8 days from order to delivery (China-Sweden).
It´s the same speed when I´m ordering the modchips for Xbox.Ps2 from China

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Hi All,
We maiden it last weekend. Only did 1 flight because we had a hot start due to insufficient battery power to start up the engine. The hot start burned a hole on the fuel line and caused engine to quit in air. Luckily we were on final and 50 feet from runway and landed it safety. Slightly bent left wheel axle. Sent Engine back for service and check up. Will get it in the air again after getting the engine. These Kero start engines are power hungry, now got Duralite battery on it for good. This plane handles low speed very well. Glad that it's not a F-18 or something similar while encounter flame out while flying low and slow.
Will report more tech info later.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
You can always ask me and I'll show you the way!
I have lots of pictures of the installation too...
Actually it's a nice one to do as access is easy.
Downsides? Speed brakes are a little fiddly but very satisfying when finished (also work very well!) Gear doors are a lot easier now that JL can supply the cylinder/hinge pack!
Enjoy!

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
More Flight reports: Sunday December 20, 2009. Weather: 20C, 67C, partially cloudy, mild wind, 2-3 mph headwind.
L39 - right now I have 3 tanks, 2 plastic main and 1 kevlar back up tank, total 129.5 oz, I really like the blow molded plastic tanks because they are very reliable and leak-proof and puncture resistance. I have Smoke system on, but still need to install 2 smoke tanks in there. There is more than enough room to fit all of them in there. I have 160sx and set timer at 6 min. and have one full tank fuel left at the end of flight + taxing back. On landing, I cut throttle to idle and point the nose down and aim it at where I want to land until a couple feet above the runway, then I raise the nose up about 2 to 5 degrees then it's touched down on main nice and easy. C.G is now at 6.5-6.6" from L.E. at root.
More photos of Dave's L39 flying. Will get my L39TJ posted later.
