OOOOOOOH THOMAS.....the way you make it sound, i may not even sart the glassing process on my foam wings....;-).. How would you incorporate the wing spars to peoples planes that already have the bulkheads/receivers installed??? Please dont tell me i would have to grind that s#it out!!
The front spar would either need a "bend" in it, or would have to incorporate a forward spar (b/c of the leading edge flaps). I think a "shorty" would be best and easiest, as with a carbon laminated balsa/spruce forward spar you could put the necessary bend into the spar, then laminate carbon on both sides of the spar (overall 2 pieces, then a piece of carbon cloth in the skin). Then make a "box" spar that goes from the full span of each wing panel and the "bend" about 1/4 to 1/2" behind the leading edge flap seam line (there would need to be 2 "oval" shaped cutouts in the forward box spar for the leading edge flap linkage, but they wouldn't be very large, and i personally dont think would hurt the structural integrety at all). Then have a shorty aluminum spar (that uses G-10 sheets as a spacer) glued in between this forward box spar. The rear spar would be the same but the box portion wouldn't extend the full span of the wing panel. it would only go about as far as the aluminum receiver goes.
Using the G-10 spacers would allow enough adjustment for those who already have built airframes to fine tune the new wing panels to fit their particular bulkheads..

Make sense?

Dave,
it would be the whole she-bang.. Wings, stabs/elevators, fins/rudders.. everything that is sheeted foam core now would become composite. How's the 2 seater coming?

Hi T:
That is a great idea, I guess when Hudson gets that Crusader done which is coming together nicely he will get back on the twin seater

OK Guys n Gals, what are you all using on your controls for horns?? In the instruction it says that they need to be a max of 5/8 inch....Well Robart has the nice metal ball link horns but they are only 1/2 inch....seems to be a lil on the short side?? If you have pictures of your horn style and placement, i would appreciate it! thanks, Nick

Nick,

I'll have to dig up some pics, but I used a BVM carbon fiber control horn and machined it down to shape.

I placed some hardwood blocks in the control surface with enough space between them so that the horn would fit. Then, hysol the horns in.

Before you do that! If i were to do it again, i would use the Hinges that YA uses on their "arf's" shaun @ YA can get them for you. I believe he "may" be able to get a crude drawing of how they did their gap covers, etc as well. you'll have to check with him on that though.

Nick, I have a set of the hinges that Thomas refers to. I am not using mine. If you want them, they are yours for the asking.

Ok guys- got a question.....

I am setting up my linkages (trial run) and i have decided to go with 1/2 inch robart ball link horns, 4/40 threaded one-end rods wth carbon over the length of the rod. In looking at it, it doesnt look like i have enough clearance on the servo cover to allow for good movement of the servo in the current config, (and that is with the clevis on the outermost hole of the HD arm). Any ideas??? Did you all just cut more of the cover, did you use the outermost hole?? I am not a fan. You are kind of limited, especially on the ailerons, to the height of the horn you use because of the aileron linkage cover. .....Pix would be appreciated of your setup...Thanks in advance-Nick

Nick,

What servo? Take comfort in the fact that you need next to no throw on the ailerons on that thing...

Nick,
I had hitec 5645MG's in mine and using the metal servo arms, i had about 1/2" between the outer horn and the servo hatch cover. I Also had the servo's mounted to the hatch cover using some large maple blocks hysol'd to the cover.

Thomas, that is what i have my servos mounted like, as per instructions. I was going to use 2721 or 8411, andi have the small HD arms on the servo...I have no where near 1/2 inch between the hole and the cover.....

In your picture it looks like the clevis is on the cover already... Only suggestion i have is maybe a longer servo arm? How long is the arm you have right now? 1" or so?

Thomas, it is the smallest of the HD JR arms.....like 1/2 inch i believe. I was trying to keep the moment short so there would be no worry of flutter later. The clevis is almost touching the cover already!! I guess by followingthe instructions, i may have screwed myself, had i put the servo on the cover so the arm was to the rear, i would be able to get more mechanical advantage, but i did it the way the book told me to. HUH? Guess i will just get a longer arm ;-(
